StoneFly Migrate
StoneFly Migrate transfers unstructured NFS and CIFS/SMB data volumes over LAN or WAN.
What StoneFly Migrate is
StoneFly Migrate transfers unstructured NFS and CIFS/SMB data volumes over LAN or WAN. It supports scheduled jobs and real-time replication for those file volumes, including moves between physical or virtual NAS environments. Files are divided into smaller data sets, transferred in parallel, and recombined at the destination. Hash checks verify each shard; if a shard is corrupted, it can be retransferred without sending the whole file again.
The software analyzes CPU, memory, and network resources and dynamically allocates them to processes. A centralized console manages migration jobs and monitors resource consumption in real time. StoneFly presents it for moving NAS volumes to new appliances, transferring data during maintenance, offloading infrequently accessed data to capacity tiers, and syncing critical volumes. Its FAQ says there is no transfer limit and that users can migrate as many terabytes as needed for free.
The software is delivered as an OVA virtual machine and is compatible with VMware. Its setup guide says file transfers can be encrypted. For physical NAS to virtual NAS transfers, both appliances must be on the same subnet. StoneFly Migrate is free, but technical support and professional services are sold separately.
Good
- Free software with no data transfer limit
- Supports scheduled jobs and real-time replication
- Corrupted shards can be retransferred individually
- Central console monitors resource consumption
- Supports encryption of file transfers
Watch out
- Technical support and professional services cost extra
- Physical-to-virtual NAS transfers require both appliances on the same subnet
- Delivered as an OVA virtual machine compatible with VMware
Who it suits
StoneFly Migrate suits teams moving NFS or CIFS/SMB file volumes between NAS systems or during maintenance. It may also fit teams that need scheduled migration or real-time replication, provided their deployment meets the stated network constraint.
Verdict
StoneFly Migrate supports file-volume transfers with scheduled and real-time workflows, plus shard-level integrity checks. Factor in the separate cost of support and the same-subnet requirement for physical-to-virtual NAS transfers.
