KubeSolo
KubeSolo is an open-source, MIT-licensed Kubernetes distribution maintained by Portainer for running the full Kubernetes API on a single node.
What KubeSolo is
KubeSolo is an open-source, MIT-licensed Kubernetes distribution maintained by Portainer for running the full Kubernetes API on a single node. It removes clustering machinery such as etcd quorum logic and multi-node networking overlays, and uses under 200 MB of RAM at idle according to its site. Standard Kubernetes manifests, Helm, CRDs, RBAC, ServiceAccounts, namespace isolation, health probes, restart policies, and resource limits are supported. Networking includes an integrated CNI, CoreDNS, and ClusterIP, NodePort, and LoadBalancer service types. Rancher’s local-path-provisioner is included by default, with CSI drivers supported. KubeSolo can run offline without cloud connectivity or external registries. Its d2k component exposes a Docker-compatible API over mTLS, while a Prometheus endpoint and Grafana dashboards provide observability. Linux supports ARM, ARM64, x86_64, and RISC-V 64; kubesoloctl can run it in Docker on macOS and Windows WSL2.
Good
- Full Kubernetes API on one node
- Uses under 200 MB RAM at idle
- Runs offline without external registries
- Supports multiple CPU architectures
- Includes Docker-compatible mTLS API
Watch out
- No multi-node clusters by design
- Not currently CNCF-certified
- Some operators may need kubelet-path configuration
- Requires Linux installation prerequisites
Who it suits
KubeSolo suits edge devices, factory and OT infrastructure, IoT hardware, developer workstations, remote sites, and kiosks. It is designed for single-node deployments, including resource-constrained systems.
Verdict
KubeSolo provides familiar Kubernetes resources and networking without cluster machinery. Its single-node scope and certification status are important considerations for deployments needing centralized multi-node operation.
