What Imixs-Workflow is

Imixs-Workflow is a transactional workflow engine for modeling and running business processes on Jakarta EE. It uses BPMN 2.0 to represent event-based processes, business rules, automated actions, and approval workflows. Each process instance can have its own access control list, with task-level owner, read, and write permissions defined in the BPMN model. The REST API provides workflow, model, report, document, administration, event-log, and scheduler resources, and business objects are available in JSON and XML.

The engine can run as a Docker-based microservice or be embedded in Jakarta EE applications. Java plugins and adapters extend workflow processing, and adapters can call external microservices. Imixs-Forms supplies JavaScript components for workflow-enabled web applications. Its OIDC security module supports browser login and bearer-token authentication for REST APIs through providers including Keycloak, Microsoft Entra ID, Auth0, and Okta. The project is free software under the Eclipse Public License 2.0, with a secondary license for GPL-2.0-or-later compatibility. It has no feature limits or license fees, including for production use. The project directs users to its community forum and documentation, and offers professional services and consulting.
