What DBModeler is

DBModeler is a browser-based ER modeler for designing databases and generating SQL for 14 engines. Its visual editor supports table editing, relationships, undo and redo, automatic arrangement, and PNG diagram export. It generates engine-aware CREATE SQL for an initial version and ALTER migrations for later changes. Each version has a snapshot and diff that users can compare, roll back, regenerate as SQL, or sync to Git. Existing DDL can be pasted or uploaded, with an import preview before changes reach the model. Models can remain in the browser or sync through Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox; schemas can also be published to GitHub or GitLab as commits, branches, or pull or merge requests. Installed as a progressive web app, the editor works offline and sync resumes when online. The free plan includes every feature, all 14 engines, no usage quotas, and no account requirement. There is no team collaboration; a managed edition and shared cloud diagrams are described as forthcoming or in progress.

Good

  • Free plan includes every feature and all 14 engines
  • Generates CREATE SQL and ALTER migrations
  • Version snapshots support comparison and rollback
  • Imports existing DDL with a preview
  • Works offline as an installed progressive web app

Watch out

  • No team collaboration
  • Shared cloud diagrams are still in progress
  • Managed team edition is not yet available

Who it suits

DBModeler suits individuals who want browser-based schema design, SQL generation, version history, and integrations with storage or Git providers. It may be less suitable for teams that need shared diagrams or collaboration within the tool.

Verdict

DBModeler offers a broad set of modeling, SQL, and versioning tools at no listed cost. Its individual workflow is a better match than shared team work until collaboration features are available.
