- Musical limits: Choose a key, time signature, and approximate tempo that suit your playing. If you do not know these yet, ask ChatGPT to suggest options and explain them.
- Shape: Specify whether you want a verse and chorus, an instrumental passage, or another arrangement.
- Playable detail: Ask for chord symbols, a singable melody described in note names or scale degrees, and a rhythm you can tap. Request one section at a time if a full draft feels unwieldy.
Build a Draft With ChatGPT
- State the brief. Try: “Help me compose an original, gentle song about coming home after a long day. Suggest a key, meter, and tempo. Give me a four-bar chord progression and explain the mood each chord creates. Do not imitate a named artist or use existing lyrics.” Replace the mood and subject with your own.
- Ask for a structure. Once you like the direction, ask ChatGPT to lay out a verse and chorus with a clear number of bars for each. Request chord symbols above each bar so the harmony is easy to follow.
- Develop the melody separately. Ask for a short melody over the progression, with note names or scale degrees and a simple rhythm description. Then ask how the melody fits the chords. If you cannot play a suggested note or rhythm, ask for a simpler alternative.
- Draft lyrics to fit the tune. Give ChatGPT the subject, point of view, and syllable target for each line. Ask it to keep the chorus wording easy to remember, then sing the lines aloud; revise any line that feels cramped or unnatural.
- Revise one musical element at a time. Ask for alternatives to a specific chord, melody phrase, or lyric line while keeping the rest of the draft unchanged. Compare the versions by playing or singing them, and keep the choices that sound right to you.
- Save the working version. Copy the chosen lyrics, chords, and section labels into a note on your phone before moving them into a music workspace. This gives you a clear reference while you try the arrangement.

Check the Draft Before You Share It
- Play the chords and melody together at a comfortable pace. Change any notes or chord changes that do not sound right to you.
- Sing the lyrics over the melody and adjust syllables that do not sit naturally on the rhythm.
- Listen to a recording of your draft and note the next change you want to make before prompting ChatGPT again.
