HandBrake is the best starting point for most people converting video for Facebook in 2026. It is free, open source, works on Linux, macOS and Windows, and provides H.264/AAC MP4 presets without requiring command-line skills. Use FFmpeg instead when you need repeatable scripts or exact encoder control. For a one-off conversion without installing software, CloudConvert, VideoConvert or FreeConvert can convert files in a browser, provided you are comfortable uploading the footage to a third party.
For the safest Facebook upload, create a progressive, square-pixel MP4 with H.264/AVC video, stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps or higher, a fixed frame rate of 30 fps or below, and 1080p dimensions. Use 1080×1920 for vertical 9:16 Reels and Stories, or 1920×1080 for landscape Feed video and compatible ads. Facebook accepts MOV too, but MP4 is the more dependable default because the platform re-encodes every upload.

What is the best MP4 converter for Facebook?
Choose the converter according to the job rather than the file extension. HandBrake is the strongest all-round choice for a single file or a modest queue. FFmpeg is better for automation and repeatable production pipelines. Browser services remove installation work, while Wondershare UniConverter and Adobe Media Encoder make sense when batch processing, hardware acceleration, watch folders or an established professional workflow justify paid software.
Recommended Free Tools
| Tool | Best use | Where it runs | Facebook-ready capabilities | Access and cost | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HandBrake | Default free desktop conversion | Linux, macOS, Windows | H.264/AAC MP4, Creator and Social presets, queued jobs | Free and open source | Re-encodes video, so long or high-resolution jobs take time |
| FFmpeg | Scripts, batch jobs and precise control | Local command-line environment | H.264/AAC MP4 through configurable commands | Free and open source | Command-line learning curve |
| CloudConvert | Occasional no-install conversion | Web browser | Many source formats plus controls for resolution, quality and file size | Free use with service limits; paid options may apply | Requires uploading the video and depends on internet bandwidth |
| VideoConvert | Browser conversion with broad codec coverage | Web browser | FFmpeg-based H.264/AAC MP4 output | Browser service; current access terms vary | Browser memory and device speed can constrain very large jobs |
| FreeConvert | Another occasional web option | Web browser | Online MP4 conversion for common social-video jobs | Free tier with changing file-size and conversion limits | Limits can require splitting a job or moving to a paid tier |
| Wondershare UniConverter | Paid all-in-one desktop batches | Local desktop application | Broad format support, batch conversion and hardware acceleration | Paid software | Extra cost and features are unnecessary for a one-off Facebook file |
| Adobe Media Encoder | Adobe production teams | Local desktop application | Presets, watch folders and publishing-oriented workflows | Paid professional software | Best value depends on an existing Adobe workflow |
Whichever tool you select, the converter is only half the job. The exported frame shape, frame rate, scan type, audio codec and bitrate determine whether Facebook receives a clean source or has to make aggressive corrections.

What does Facebook accept as an MP4 in 2026?
Facebook accepts MP4 files and also supports MOV, but an MP4 encoded with H.264 video and AAC audio is the safer compatibility choice. A current Facebook-format guide from Vidico identifies that combination as the preferred format and recommends vertical 9:16 for most new video, while landscape 16:9 remains appropriate for Feed and some advertising placements.
Recommended baseline settings
- Container: MP4. MOV is accepted, but MP4 is the safer default for upload processing.
- Video codec: H.264/AVC.
- Audio: stereo AAC at 128 kbps or higher.
- Frame rate: fixed frame rate, normally 30 fps or below. Reels can accept up to 60 fps when the source and destination call for it.
- Scan and pixels: progressive scan and square pixels.
- Resolution: 1080×1920 for 9:16 vertical video or 1920×1080 for 16:9 landscape video.
Facebook re-encodes uploaded video. Supplying a conventional 1080p H.264/AAC file gives that process a predictable source; unusual codecs, variable frame rates or interlaced footage create more opportunities for visible quality loss or sync problems.

1. HandBrake: who is it for?
HandBrake is for creators who want a dependable graphical conversion workflow without paying for software. The project describes it as an open-source video transcoder for Linux, macOS and Windows, with output options including MP4, MKV and WebM.
Open a source, choose an MP4 preset, confirm H.264 video and AAC stereo audio, set the dimensions for the Facebook placement, and add the job to the queue. The Creator 1080p preset is a practical starting point when you need a high-quality 1080p file. Social presets are useful when you are targeting a size budget rather than simply preserving the source dimensions.
Standout features
- Official H.264/AAC MP4 presets reduce the number of codec decisions you must make.
- Social presets target 25 MB for several combinations: 30-second 1080p60, one-minute 720p60, two-minute 540p60 and five-minute 360p60.
- Queueing lets you prepare multiple conversions before leaving the application to encode.
- All processing is local, so the footage does not need to be uploaded to a conversion website.
The 25 MB figures are preset targets, not a universal Facebook upload limit. A target preset may lower resolution or frame rate to hit its size goal, so inspect the result before using it for a campaign or Reel where visual detail matters.
Free plan, platforms and limits
HandBrake is free and open source on Linux, macOS and Windows. It re-encodes video rather than simply changing the filename or container, which makes the output predictable but means a long or high-resolution source can take substantial processing time.
2. FFmpeg: who is it for?
FFmpeg is for people who need repeatable commands, folder-wide processing or detailed control over scaling, cropping, frame rate and bitrate. It is free, open source and command-line based, so it suits a scripted workflow better than an occasional manual conversion.
A useful starting command for a conventional Facebook MP4 is:

ffmpeg -i input.ext -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart output.mp4
This command selects H.264 video, yuv420p pixel format, a fixed 30 fps output, AAC audio at 128 kbps and fast-start MP4 metadata. Treat it as a template: add an explicit scale or crop when the source does not already match 1080×1920 or 1920×1080, and choose a different frame rate when the destination is a Reel that needs up to 60 fps.
Standout features
- Commands can be placed in shell scripts and applied consistently to many files.
- Filters expose exact control over aspect-ratio conversion, cropping, scaling and frame-rate changes.
- NASA documentation identifies FFmpeg as an open-source method for creating H.264/AAC MP4 files.
- Local processing keeps the source footage on your own machine.
Free plan, platforms and limits
FFmpeg is free and open source and runs as a local command-line tool. Its main limitation is usability: you must understand input paths, codecs, filters and quoting rules, and a small mistake can produce the wrong dimensions or an incompatible audio stream.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →3. CloudConvert: who is it for?
CloudConvert is for an occasional conversion when you want a browser interface instead of a desktop installation. Its format pages cover direct paths such as MOV to MP4, MKV to MP4, WebM to MP4, AVI to MP4, MPEG/MPG to MP4 and VOB to MP4.
Upload the source, choose MP4, and expose the video and audio controls if the interface presents them. Select H.264 for video and AAC for audio, then set the output resolution and any file-size target deliberately rather than accepting an arbitrary default.
Standout features
- Broad input-format coverage for common camera, phone, screen-recording and archive files.
- Browser controls for resolution, quality and file size.
- No local installation, which is useful on a shared or locked-down computer.
Access and limits
CloudConvert offers free use subject to service limits, with paid options available for heavier usage. Uploading is the trade-off: conversion speed depends on your connection as well as the service, and confidential footage should only be uploaded when the service’s current retention and deletion terms are acceptable.
4. VideoConvert: who is it for?
VideoConvert is for browser-based conversion when you need broad codec handling but do not want to install a desktop program. Its documentation says the service uses an FFmpeg engine, reads MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, OGV, MXF, M4V and transport streams, and writes H.264/AAC MP4.
Choose MP4 as the output, select H.264/AAC when those controls are exposed, and set the dimensions for the intended Facebook placement. A vertical source should remain 1080×1920 when possible; a landscape source should use 1920×1080 rather than being stretched between aspect ratios.
Standout features
- FFmpeg-based format support covers more than the usual phone-video extensions.
- Browser workflow avoids installation and local command-line setup.
- H.264/AAC output aligns with Facebook’s conventional upload combination.
Access and limits
VideoConvert is accessed in a browser. Very large files can be constrained by browser memory, the speed of the device running the browser and the time required to upload and process the source. Local HandBrake or FFmpeg is safer for lengthy, private or repeated jobs.

5. FreeConvert: who is it for?
FreeConvert is another web option for an occasional conversion when convenience matters more than a local workflow. It appears alongside CloudConvert in current free-converter comparisons as an online choice for common conversion tasks.
Use MP4 as the output and choose H.264/AAC, 1080×1920 or 1920×1080, progressive scan and a fixed frame rate when the controls are available. Download the result and play it locally before uploading it to Facebook.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStandout features
- Runs in a browser, with no desktop installation.
- Useful as a second online option when another service does not accept a particular source.
- Suitable for a single short conversion rather than a production queue.
Access and limits
FreeConvert provides a free tier, but file-size and conversion limits can change and may require a paid upgrade for larger or more frequent jobs. Browser uploading also means you must account for privacy, bandwidth and the time needed to download the converted file.
6. Wondershare UniConverter: who is it for?
Wondershare UniConverter is for users who want a paid desktop application that combines broad format support, batch conversion and hardware acceleration. Those features are useful when a creator regularly processes many files or wants a single interface for a wider media workflow.
Standout features
- Broad input and output format coverage.
- Batch conversion for multiple clips.
- Hardware acceleration can reduce processing time when supported by the computer and source settings.
- Local desktop processing avoids uploading footage to a web service.
Access and limits
UniConverter is paid software. For one Facebook clip, its additional capabilities are usually unnecessary; its value increases when batch queues and acceleration save repeated manual work.
7. Adobe Media Encoder: who is it for?
Adobe Media Encoder is for production teams and creators already working in an Adobe pipeline. The comparison identifies watch folders, presets and publishing features as its distinguishing strengths, rather than simple one-off conversion.
Standout features
- Watch folders can automatically process files placed in a designated location.
- Presets standardize exports across recurring projects and collaborators.
- Publishing-oriented features fit workflows that send finished encodes to multiple destinations.
Access and limits
Media Encoder is paid professional software. It is difficult to justify solely for converting one file to Facebook MP4, but it can be efficient when an existing Adobe workflow already supplies the project, presets and licensing.
How do I choose the right converter?
Start with four questions: must the footage stay local, is the job occasional or repetitive, how much control do you need, and does the output need a specific aspect ratio or size target?

Choose local processing when privacy matters
HandBrake, FFmpeg, UniConverter and Media Encoder process files on the computer. That avoids uploading unreleased, client or personal footage. Browser tools are convenient, but they require an upload and a later download.
Choose a graphical tool when you want fewer decisions
HandBrake’s presets hide most codec complexity while still exposing dimensions and frame rate. UniConverter and Media Encoder add paid workflow features. FFmpeg is more powerful, but every important setting is your responsibility.

Choose a browser tool for an occasional file
CloudConvert, VideoConvert and FreeConvert are practical when installation is impossible or a single conversion does not justify configuring a desktop encoder. They are less attractive for very large files, confidential footage or a queue of dozens of clips.
Choose FFmpeg for repeatable batches
A saved command can apply the same codec, pixel format, frame rate and audio bitrate to every file in a folder. That consistency is valuable for recurring social exports and reduces the chance that one clip uses a different frame shape or variable frame rate.
How do I convert a video to Facebook-ready MP4 in HandBrake?
- Open HandBrake and load the source file.
- Choose an MP4-based preset, such as Creator 1080p or a suitable Social preset.
- In the video settings, select H.264/AVC. In the audio settings, select stereo AAC at 128 kbps or higher.
- Set the dimensions to 1080×1920 for a 9:16 Reel or Story, or 1920×1080 for a 16:9 landscape placement. Keep square pixels and progressive output.
- Set a constant frame rate. Use 30 fps or below for the normal baseline; retain up to 60 fps only when the destination is a Reel and the source benefits from it.
- Preview a short section, start the encode, and play the finished MP4 before uploading.
Use a Social preset’s 25 MB target only when that size is useful for your delivery constraint. The 25 MB target is attached to specific duration and resolution combinations and is not a universal Facebook requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I convert MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI or HEVC video?
Choose the source extension in the converter, then force the output to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. The extension alone does not determine compatibility: a file named .mp4 can still contain a codec or frame structure that is a poor match for Facebook.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Source | Recommended action | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| MOV | Convert to MP4 when you want the most broadly predictable upload. | Keep the intended 9:16 or 16:9 shape; do not stretch the image. |
| MKV | Remuxing is not enough when the video codec is unsuitable; encode H.264/AAC. | Confirm progressive scan and a fixed frame rate. |
| WebM | Encode to H.264/AAC MP4 for Facebook compatibility. | Check that the browser converter did not reduce the resolution unnecessarily. |
| AVI | Re-encode to MP4 rather than changing the filename. | Inspect audio playback and synchronization after conversion. |
| HEVC/H.265 | Use HandBrake, FFmpeg or a browser encoder that outputs H.264/AAC. | Check frame rate, dimensions and audio because the codec change is a full re-encode. |
How do I convert with FFmpeg?
- Install FFmpeg for your operating system and place the source in an accessible folder.
- Run the baseline command:
ffmpeg -i input.ext -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart output.mp4. - Add a scale or crop filter when the source does not match Facebook’s intended frame shape. A 9:16 destination should end at 1080×1920; a 16:9 destination should end at 1920×1080.
- Play the output locally and inspect the first and last minute for audio sync, missing sound and unexpected cropping.
- Upload only after the output is confirmed as an MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio.
The command is a starting template, not a guarantee that every source will fit every placement. Crop or pad deliberately so faces, captions and other important content stay inside the visible frame.
What problems can occur after conversion?
Facebook rejects the file
Check that the output container is MP4, the video is H.264/AVC, the audio is AAC and the frame rate is fixed. Re-export rather than merely renaming the extension, because a filename change does not change the codecs inside the file.

The video has bars or looks stretched
The source and destination aspect ratios do not match. Set the output to 1080×1920 for vertical 9:16 or 1920×1080 for landscape 16:9, then choose crop or letterbox behavior that preserves the subject instead of stretching it.
Audio is silent or out of sync
Confirm that the converter created a stereo AAC track and that the output plays correctly outside Facebook. A fixed frame rate and a full re-encode are safer than copying an unusual source stream unchanged.
The file is larger than expected
Lower the target resolution, frame rate or quality setting while keeping H.264/AAC. HandBrake’s Social presets can target 25 MB for specified duration and resolution combinations, but those targets are not a universal platform cap.
The browser conversion is too slow
Large files require both upload and processing time, and browser memory or device speed can become the bottleneck. Move the job to local HandBrake or FFmpeg when the file is lengthy, private or part of a repeated batch.
Which settings should I use for Reels versus Feed video?
Use 1080×1920 and a 9:16 frame for Reels and Stories, with a fixed rate up to 60 fps when the Reel benefits from it. Use 1920×1080 and a 16:9 frame for landscape Feed video and compatible ad placements. In both cases, keep H.264 video, stereo AAC audio, square pixels and progressive scan.
Do not let a converter’s generic “social” label decide the shape for you. Select the destination first, then set dimensions and frame rate to match it; otherwise a correct MP4 can still appear cropped, padded or too small in Facebook’s player.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting a video to MP4 improve its original quality?
No. Conversion cannot restore detail that was lost in the source. It produces a more compatible H.264/AAC file, and a clean 1080p source gives Facebook a better input for its own re-encoding than an unusual codec or interlaced file.
Is 128 kbps AAC enough for Facebook video audio?
It is the stated baseline for stereo AAC. Higher audio bitrates are reasonable when the source contains music or detailed ambience, but exporting far above the source bitrate does not create new audio detail.
Should I use 30 fps or 60 fps for a Facebook Reel?
Use 30 fps as the conservative default. Choose up to 60 fps only when the Reel destination supports it and the source was captured at that rate; otherwise the larger file may add no visible benefit.
Can I convert a confidential video with an online service?
You can, but the file must leave your device during upload. For unreleased, client or personal footage, use a local converter such as HandBrake or FFmpeg so the source remains on your own computer.
