What TerrSet is
TerrSet is a Windows desktop geospatial system for monitoring and modeling the earth system in support of sustainable development. Its integrated environment combines IDRISI GIS Analysis, IDRISI Image Processing, and specialist applications. GIS Analysis provides more than 300 analytical tools, mainly for raster data. Image Processing handles restoration, enhancement, transformation, and classification of remotely sensed imagery. Land Change Modeler supports land-change analysis and prediction, including REDD project-level modeling. Earth Trends Modeler examines remotely sensed image time series for long-term and seasonal climate trends and recurring patterns. Habitat and Biodiversity Modeler covers habitat assessment, landscape-pattern analysis, and biodiversity modeling. GeOSIRIS quantifies and maps effects of national REDD projects on deforestation, carbon emissions, agricultural revenue, and carbon payments. Utilities import and export major file and imagery formats. TerrSet is COM compliant and documents API access from other programming environments. The free liberaGIS plan runs on Windows 8.1 or later, with some modules omitted.
Good
- Over 300 raster-focused analytical tools
- Specialized land-change and climate modeling
- Habitat and biodiversity assessment tools
- Imports and exports major formats
- Free Windows liberaGIS plan
Watch out
- Windows only; no native Linux or macOS
- liberaGIS omits several modules
- Requires substantial storage for tutorial data
- No web mapping or dashboard builder
Who it suits
TerrSet suits researchers, educators, and professionals handling land-use planning, environmental monitoring, raster analysis, or biodiversity work on Windows.
Verdict
TerrSet combines extensive raster analysis with dedicated environmental and land-change models. Its free Windows edition is useful for spatial professionals, but platform restrictions and omitted liberaGIS modules matter.
