What Nintendulator is

Nintendulator is a free, open-source NES emulator for Windows, written in C++. It aims to reproduce the console’s hardware behavior, including quirks and special cases. It supports .NES and UNIF files, FDS images in fwNES format, and NSF files; mapper support comes through external DLLs, with extra sound channels available for most games that provide them. Tools include FDS image writing, Game Genie codes, customizable controllers for up to four players, input movie recording and playback, AVI capture, and a debugger with simple breakpoints. Savestates and battery-backed RAM are kept in the current user’s Application Data folder, so administrator privileges are not required. The listed official release is version 0.980, dated January 1, 2019; version 0.985 Beta is an unstable development build that may have significant bugs. Versions 0.985 and later have 32-bit and 64-bit editions, are officially supported on Windows 10 and later, and are tested with recent Wine builds. Full-speed emulation is estimated to require a 1500MHz or faster CPU.

Good

  • Free and open source.
  • Supports .NES, UNIF, FDS and NSF formats.
  • Offers Game Genie support and four-player controllers.
  • Savestates and battery-backed RAM need no administrator privileges.
  • Recent builds are tested with Wine.

Watch out

  • The official release listed is from 2019.
  • The newer 0.985 Beta may have significant bugs.
  • Full-speed emulation is estimated to require a 1500MHz CPU.
  • No rewind, netplay or shader support.

Who it suits

Nintendulator suits Windows users who want to emulate NES games and use features such as controller customization, input recording or debugging. It may also suit users running recent builds through Wine.

Verdict

Nintendulator combines NES format support with recording, debugging and controller tools at no cost. Choose carefully between the older listed official release and the explicitly unstable beta.
