Motrix
Motrix is a free download manager for regular downloads, BitTorrent and magnet links.
What Motrix is
Motrix is a free download manager for regular downloads, BitTorrent and magnet links. It supports HTTP, FTP, BitTorrent, magnet links and Metalink, with controls to pause, resume, retry and prioritize tasks. A browser extension can send downloads to it from Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox or Safari. Plugins add options such as site resolution, post-processing and automation; they declare permissions in a JSON manifest and run sandboxed inside Motrix. It can also run headless as a Docker server on a NAS or other server. Core task data and settings stay local, and no account is required. Motrix is available for macOS, Windows and Linux, with extension, web and self-hosted options also listed. BitTorrent use shares the app's IP address with trackers, DHT nodes and peers; DHT is enabled by default and can be turned off. The download page lists version 2.0.0-beta.44 and warns that beta builds may be less stable.
Good
- Supports HTTP, FTP, BitTorrent, magnet links and Metalink
- Task controls include pause, resume, retry and prioritization
- Plugins run sandboxed and declare their permissions
- Local task data; no account required
Watch out
- Beta builds may be less stable
- BitTorrent shares the app's IP address with peers and trackers
- DHT is enabled by default
Who it suits
Motrix suits people who want to manage several download protocols and control tasks from a desktop app or browser extension. Its headless Docker option may also suit users running a NAS or server.
Verdict
Motrix pairs broad protocol support with task controls, browser handoff and self-hosted deployment options. Account-free local storage is useful, but BitTorrent users should note the stated IP sharing and default DHT behavior.
