KSCrash
KSCrash is an open-source crash reporting framework for iOS and macOS.
What KSCrash is
KSCrash is an open-source crash reporting framework for iOS and macOS. After installation, it stores reports on disk and can capture Mach exceptions, signals, C++ and Objective-C exceptions, main-thread hangs, and OS-level events such as out-of-memory, thermal, CPU, and reboot terminations. It generates crash reports in Apple format, with installation documented through Swift Package Manager or CocoaPods. Its Watchdog monitor detects main-thread hangs lasting at least 250ms and captures full backtraces. CPU monitoring tracks sliding-window averages and can optionally create non-fatal reports when warning or critical thresholds are crossed. Other capabilities include a sampling profiler, zombie detection, memory tracking, automatic crash-cause diagnosis, and custom exception reporting. MetricKit integration processes MXCrashDiagnostic payloads, though hang and CPU exception diagnostics are not yet supported. Sending reports to a server requires a KSCrash installation. Reports may contain sensitive information, so the project advises reviewing them before transmission and using HTTPS endpoints.
Good
- Free, MIT-licensed open-source framework
- Captures several exception and termination types
- Stores Apple-format reports on disk
- Includes hang monitoring with full backtraces
- Offers Swift Package Manager and CocoaPods installation
Watch out
- Supports iOS and macOS only
- MetricKit hang and CPU diagnostics are unsupported
- Version 1.x is unsupported
- Reports may contain sensitive information
Who it suits
KSCrash suits developers building Apple-platform apps who need crash capture and reporting capabilities. It may also fit teams that want an open-source framework and can review reports before sending them to a server.
Verdict
KSCrash covers a broad range of crash and diagnostic events for Apple platforms. Consider its MetricKit limitations and review reports for sensitive data before transmission.
