What Galene is
Galene is a free videoconference system with a browser client and self-hosted server for lectures, conferences, tutorials and meetings. The server supports arbitrary audio and video streams, multiple codecs, simulcast and scalable video coding for VP8 and VP9. Its web client provides conferencing, text chat, screen and window sharing, background blur, activity detection, moderation and peer-to-peer file transfer, and can broadcast media from disk. Authentication includes usernames and passwords or token authorization. An HTTP administrative API manages groups and users, while WHIP, LDAP, an RTMP frontend for OBS Studio, an experimental SIP bridge and a sample authorization server are listed integrations. Traffic is encrypted between senders, the server and receivers, but media is decrypted by the server, so calls are not end-to-end encrypted. Galene estimates about 300 lecture participants per CPU core and around 20 participants in one many-to-many meeting on one core. The default client bundles third-party assets. It supports recent WebRTC browsers and is available for web, Windows, Android, iOS and self-hosting.
Good
- Free MIT-licensed self-hosting
- Chat, screen sharing and moderation
- LDAP, OBS and SIP integrations
- Local meeting recording
- Supports large lecture estimates
Watch out
- No end-to-end encryption
- Many-to-many capacity is limited per CPU core
- Self-hosting requires server management
Who it suits
It suits organizations wanting free, self-hosted conferencing for lectures, tutorials, conferences or meetings. It is also relevant when browser access, administrative APIs or integrations are needed.
Verdict
Galene combines a broad browser feature set with self-hosted deployment and several integration options. Its lack of end-to-end encryption and server-management requirement should be considered before adoption.
