What FocusFusion is

FocusFusion combines photographs taken at different focus distances into a single image with greater depth of field. This Windows app offers depthmap and wavelet focus-stacking algorithms, plus automatic alignment and manual retouching. Depthmap needs images ordered from front to back or back to front and may struggle with translucent subjects or complex overlaps. Wavelet can process images in any order, but may add noise, create artifacts at sharp brightness transitions, or impair alignment. Processing uses at least 16-bit precision per channel. It accepts TIFF up to 48 bpp, 16-bit-per-channel JPEG XR, and classic 8-bit JPEG; RAW files are not supported. A clone-based tool provides adjustable brush size, hardness, and opacity, with cloning at 16-bit quality. The maker recommends a tripod with focus bracketing or a macro rail, consistent exposure and contrast, and an ordered image sequence. FocusFusion is free. It requires Windows 10, an SSE4.1 CPU made after 2008, and at least 8 GB of memory; 16 GB is recommended for deeper stacks or larger DSLR images.

Good

  • Free Windows app.
  • Offers depthmap and wavelet algorithms.
  • Automatic alignment and manual retouching are available.
  • Clone retouching is performed at 16-bit quality.

Watch out

  • RAW files are not supported.
  • Depthmap needs images in front-to-back or reverse order.
  • Requires Windows 10 and at least 8 GB of memory.

Who it suits

FocusFusion suits Windows users combining images for greater depth of field, particularly those working with focus-bracketed or macro sequences. It may be useful to users who want automatic alignment and manual clone retouching, provided their images are in a supported format.

Verdict

FocusFusion provides two focus-stacking approaches, alignment, and retouching at no cost. Check the input-format and system requirements, and note the different limitations of its algorithms.
