Backing up your critical data when switching your phone or doing a fresh system install has been quite tedious. There are multiple factors to keep track of and plenty of apps and services to deal with.

While backing up, images and contacts are easy and most of the apps and services give you the option to back them up. What is left out is the SMS, which we know are legacy in the current day and age but they still hold value for some users.

In this guide, we will go through the steps to carry out an SMS backup on a Redmi smartphone. For the purpose of this guide, we will be attempting to make a backup using the internal backup setting in Xiaomi’s custom MIUI skin on a Redmi smartphone. MIUI on the whole is quite feature-packed and is one of the most widely used custom skins.

We are making this guide using a Redmi Note 7 Pro running the latest MIUI 12 update. Depending on your version of MIUI, some settings might differ.
