The fastest way to make a YouTube Short is to use the YouTube app on your phone: tap Create, choose Short, record, edit, set the audience and visibility, then publish or save a draft. You can also upload a prepared square or vertical video through the YouTube app or YouTube Studio. For standard channels, qualifying uploads are no longer than three minutes, and YouTube lists 1080p as the maximum upload resolution.

You do not need special equipment or a separate editor. A Xiaomi or other Android phone is enough for recording, editing and uploading; an existing clip from another camera can follow the upload workflow instead. The important decisions are the format, copyright clearance, audience setting and whether you are looking at public views or YouTube’s separate Engaged views metric.

What qualifies as a YouTube Short?

For standard YouTube channels, a video uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 is categorized as a Short when it is square or vertical and runs for three minutes or less. YouTube’s current creation guidance lists 1080p as the maximum upload resolution. A horizontal video does not meet the cited Shorts format rule, even if it is shorter than three minutes.

Videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 remain classified as long-form under YouTube’s rule. Official Artist Channels have a separate effective date: the three-minute classification applies to qualifying uploads made on or after December 8, 2025. If your channel is an Official Artist Channel, use the current three-minute Shorts guidance for that channel-specific date.

There is no requirement to shoot at one exact pixel width or to use a particular camera. Keep the finished file square or vertical, stay within three minutes, and do not export above the documented 1080p ceiling.

Should you record in the YouTube app or upload a finished clip?

Use in-app recording when you want a quick, phone-only workflow with YouTube’s capture and editing controls. Upload an existing clip when you have already edited footage, need more control over the source file, or are moving a video from another camera or editor.

Workflow Best for Where it happens Key controls What to remember
Record a Short Fast, spontaneous or phone-first videos YouTube app on a phone Capture, duration, music, filters and effects; save a draft or upload You still need to choose the audience and visibility before publishing
Upload a prepared clip Edited footage, camera files or a planned script YouTube app or YouTube Studio on a computer File selection, title and details, audience and visibility The file must be square or vertical and no longer than three minutes for standard-channel Shorts

Neither route has an official reach advantage. Choose the path that matches where you want to record and edit.

How do you record a Short in the YouTube app?

The YouTube app provides the complete capture path on a phone. YouTube’s own guide says special equipment is unnecessary: “You don’t need any special equipment to get started! You can record, edit, and upload all from your phone.”

  1. Sign in to YouTube. Open the YouTube app on your Android phone and use the channel on which you want the Short to appear.
  2. Open the Shorts camera. Tap Create, then select Short. If the capture screen offers a duration control, set the available duration that fits your idea before recording.
  3. Record. Hold the Capture button to record continuously, or tap Capture to start and tap it again to stop. You can make additional clips rather than trying to perform the entire Short in one take.
  4. Review the clip. Remove a previous segment if it is not useful, or restore it if you changed your mind. Keep the final sequence within the three-minute Shorts boundary for a standard channel.
  5. Add available creative elements. The in-app editor can provide music, filters and effects. Use only audio and visual material you are authorized to use; the presence of an editing control does not grant permission to import copyrighted material from elsewhere.
  6. Continue to upload details. Add the title and complete the audience and visibility choices. You can publish immediately or save the project as a draft and return to it later.

The app-based route is useful when the idea depends on a quick reaction, a demonstration filmed on the phone, or a sequence that benefits from recording in multiple takes. A draft lets you separate recording from the final publishing decision.

How do you upload a prepared Short from an Android phone?

Use the upload option when the video is already assembled. Before selecting it, check that the file is square or vertical, no longer than three minutes and no larger than the documented 1080p maximum.

  1. Open YouTube and sign in. Select the channel that should receive the upload.
  2. Start an upload. Tap Create, then choose the option to upload a video. Pick the prepared file from your phone’s storage.
  3. Review the source. Confirm that the beginning and ending are intentional, dialogue is audible, and any captions or graphics remain inside the visible frame. If the clip is horizontal, return to your editor and export a square or vertical version instead of assuming YouTube will turn it into a qualifying Short.
  4. Complete the details. Enter a clear title, select the made-for-kids audience setting that accurately describes the video, and choose a visibility state.
  5. Publish or save. Select public, private or unlisted, then publish. If you are not ready, save the upload as a draft where the app offers that option.

Uploading a finished file is also the practical route for footage made with another camera. The YouTube workflow does not require a particular camera brand or an additional streaming service.

How do you upload a Short with YouTube Studio on a computer?

Desktop Studio is useful when the clip is on a computer or when you want to review all metadata before it goes live. YouTube’s computer instructions are available in Upload YouTube Shorts — Computer.

  1. Open YouTube Studio. Sign in, then choose Create → Upload videos.
  2. Select the file. Choose the square or vertical video from your computer. YouTube allows multiple videos to be selected for upload, but each resulting draft still needs its own details completed.
  3. Complete each draft. Add the title and any other requested details, set the made-for-kids audience selection, and review the visibility setting for that individual upload.
  4. Choose visibility. Publish when the details are correct, or leave the video private or unlisted while you check it on another device.

Studio does not remove the Shorts format conditions. A file selected from a desktop must still meet the square-or-vertical and three-minute requirements for standard-channel Shorts classification.

What should you prepare before recording on a Xiaomi or other Android phone?

The official workflow does not require a tripod, microphone, light or dedicated camera. Optional accessories can make a shot easier to hold, but they are convenience items rather than prerequisites.

Choose the frame before you press record

Compose for a square or vertical final file. Leave enough room for on-screen text and interface overlays, and keep the subject away from the extreme edges so a crop or caption does not cover important details.

Make the first seconds understandable

State the demonstration, question or result early. A viewer should be able to tell what the clip is about without waiting through a long logo animation or an unrelated introduction.

Control sound and light with what you have

Move closer to the sound source, reduce competing noise and face a window or other soft light when possible. These are shooting choices, not YouTube eligibility rules, so do not delay a first Short because you lack accessories.

Keep an original copy

Save the finished export on your phone or computer before uploading. It gives you a clean version for a later correction without relying on a downloaded copy from the platform.

Which settings must you complete before publishing?

Do not treat the upload screen as optional metadata. YouTube requires a title and asks you to identify the audience and visibility; these choices control who can see the video and how it is handled on the channel.

  • Title and details: Describe the actual clip in plain language. Avoid promising a result the video does not show.
  • Made-for-kids setting: Select the audience designation that accurately applies to the content. This is a channel compliance choice, not a way to target a particular age group for reach.
  • Visibility: Choose Public to make the Short available to viewers, Private to keep it restricted, or Unlisted when you want access through a link without placing it in the public channel listings.

YouTube notes that default privacy differs by age: creators aged 13–17 have a private default, while creators 18 or older have a public default. Check the setting on every upload rather than assuming the default is the one you want. A private or unlisted upload is a practical way to inspect a first attempt before making it public.

How do copyright and Content ID affect a Short?

Only upload material you have permission to use. That includes music, clips, images, game footage and any other copyright-protected element that came from outside your own recording. YouTube warns that a valid, complete takedown notice can remove a Short and may result in a copyright strike.

The rules for a Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim are date-sensitive. YouTube describes the current treatment on its three-minute Shorts page; check that live guidance when a claim appears instead of relying on an old upload tip.

Safer ways to handle music

  • Use audio that you created or licensed for YouTube use.
  • Use the music and sounds made available inside YouTube’s own creation tools when the terms shown for that audio fit your intended use.
  • Keep proof of a licence or permission for material supplied by another person.

Giving credit by itself does not replace permission. If you are uncertain about a song or clip, remove it or replace it before publishing.

Why do the view number and Engaged views number differ?

YouTube changed the public Shorts view count on March 31, 2025. The newer view count includes starts and replays without a minimum watch-time requirement. YouTube retained the earlier measure as Engaged views, which remains available in Analytics.

That distinction matters when you evaluate a new Short. A public view total can rise from starts and replays, while Engaged views is the metric YouTube identifies for YouTube Partner Program eligibility and Shorts ad-revenue sharing. Do not compare a current public total with an older report that used the earlier counting method as if they were identical measurements.

For definitions and the current display of the metrics, use YouTube’s Get started creating YouTube Shorts guidance and the Analytics view shown for your channel.

How does Shorts monetization work?

Views alone do not guarantee payment. To earn from Shorts Feed ads, a creator must be an eligible monetizing partner and accept the Shorts Monetization Module. YouTube describes a pooled system rather than a fixed amount per view.

  1. Ad revenue is pooled. Shorts Feed ad revenue is combined for the relevant period.
  2. The Creator Pool is calculated. YouTube accounts for eligible engaged views and music usage when calculating the pool.
  3. Allocation is made by country. The pool is distributed according to each creator’s share of eligible engaged views in each country.
  4. The creator share is applied. YouTube states that creators receive 45% of the amount allocated to them. This is a stated share after allocation, not a per-view rate or an earnings forecast.

Some views are ineligible. YouTube gives examples including non-original uploads, fake views and content that fails advertiser-friendly guidelines. A repeatable editing template or automated workflow also does not guarantee monetization: YouTube’s channel policy clarification renamed repetitious content as inauthentic content in July 2025 and said repetitive or mass-produced material remains ineligible under the existing policy. Read the current Shorts monetization policies and channel monetization policies before planning a channel around revenue.

YouTube lists policy changes beginning February 1, 2027 on its monetization page. Those future-dated changes should not be treated as rules already in force in October 2026; consult the live policy page when that date approaches.

How should you choose a Shorts workflow?

Make the choice based on the state of your footage, not on an assumption that one route receives preferential distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose in-app recording when the idea is time-sensitive, you want to record several takes directly in YouTube, or you prefer the built-in music, filters and effects.
  • Choose a prepared upload when the clip is already edited, includes footage from another camera, or needs a deliberate sequence of captions and cuts before it reaches YouTube.
  • Choose a private or unlisted first upload when you need to check framing, sound, captions or copyright status before public release.
  • Use a phone-only setup when portability matters. YouTube’s official guidance says the phone can handle recording, editing and uploading without special equipment.
  • Use desktop Studio when the source file is on a computer or when multiple files need to be selected and then completed one by one.

There is no requirement to buy a separate editor, recorder or streaming service for the basic process described here. Additional gear can improve convenience, but it does not change the three-minute, square-or-vertical or copyright rules.

What should you check if a Short is rejected or looks wrong?

The video is not treated as a Short

Check the upload date, aspect ratio and duration. For a standard channel, the cited classification requires a square or vertical file uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 and no longer than three minutes. Re-export a horizontal or over-length file in a qualifying shape and duration.

The upload is blocked or claimed

Review every external song, clip and image. Replace material for which you cannot show permission, then consult the live Content ID and three-minute guidance if the claim concerns a video longer than one minute.

The wrong people can see the video

Open the video’s details and inspect visibility and the made-for-kids audience setting. A default can vary by the creator’s age, so confirm the selected state rather than relying on what the upload screen preselected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The numbers look inconsistent

Compare like with like. Since March 31, 2025, public views include starts and replays without a minimum watch time, while Engaged views is the retained metric used for YPP eligibility and Shorts ad-revenue sharing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I select several Shorts in one desktop upload?

Yes. YouTube Studio allows multiple videos to be selected for upload. Each file becomes its own draft, and you must finish the title, audience and visibility details for each one before publishing.

Is an unlisted upload suitable for sending a preview?

It can be useful when you want someone with the link to review a video before public release. Remember that an unlisted link is still shareable, so use Private instead when access should remain limited to you.

Does adding a popular song guarantee more reach?

No. Music availability and copyright treatment are separate from distribution, and YouTube’s monetization pool also accounts for music usage. Use audio you are authorized to use and judge performance with the appropriate Analytics metrics rather than assuming a song ensures reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a template-based channel still qualify for monetization?

Only if the resulting videos meet YouTube’s monetization policies. The July 2025 clarification says repetitive or mass-produced material remains ineligible as inauthentic content, so a software template cannot substitute for original creative value.

Where can I confirm the current Shorts rules?

YouTube updates its Help and policy pages when classification, claims or monetization requirements change. Check the live creation guide, computer upload guide and monetization policy immediately before a time-sensitive upload or revenue decision.
