The right way to convert MOV to MP4 depends on the video streams inside the file. If the MOV contains H.264 video, Apple’s supported shortcut is to duplicate the file and change its extension to .mp4; the video remains the same resolution and file size. If the codec is different, the renamed file is rejected, or you need a smaller or differently sized video, create a new export with iMovie or a command-line encoder. QuickTime Player is not a solution for MP4 export—Apple’s guide states that “QuickTime Player doesn’t export movies as MP4 videos.”

This guide explains when a container-only change is safe, when you must re-encode, and how to verify the result before uploading it to a website or opening it on another device.

What is the difference between MOV and MP4?

MOV and MP4 are container formats. A container packages one or more encoded video and audio streams together with metadata such as timing, language and track information. The filename suffix tells an app which container to expect; it does not tell the app which codecs are inside.

MOV and MP4 are closely related formats in the QuickTime/MOV and ISO Base Media File Format family. A MOV containing streams that MP4 supports can often be placed in an MP4 container without changing the encoded media. A MOV containing an unsupported codec, unusual track or incompatible metadata needs a genuine conversion that creates new streams.

Why changing the extension sometimes works

When a MOV uses H.264 video and ordinary MP4-compatible audio, changing .mov to .mp4 can make a website or app recognize the file. This is a remux or relabeling operation, not a codec conversion: the audio, video, dimensions and quality stay the same.

Why changing the extension can fail

If the MOV uses a codec the destination does not accept, an extension change leaves the incompatible stream untouched. The target may refuse the upload, show video without sound, or fail during playback. Renaming also cannot reduce the file size or change the resolution.

Which MOV-to-MP4 method should you use?

Method What changes Best for Important limitation
Finder extension change Container label only; streams and dimensions stay unchanged H.264 MOV files that a target app rejects only because of the .mov suffix Does not convert an incompatible codec, reduce size or change resolution
iMovie export Creates a new movie with selected export settings Codec compatibility, a different resolution or a smaller upload Export choices vary with the installed iMovie version
FFmpeg remux Copies existing encoded streams into an MP4-family container Fast, lossless container changes when every stream is MP4-compatible Cannot fix an unsupported stream or track
FFmpeg re-encode Decodes and encodes new video and audio streams Broad compatibility, changed dimensions or controlled file size Takes longer and can reduce quality if settings are too aggressive
QuickTime Player Exports movies in formats supported by its export workflow Checking or preparing a MOV export on a Mac Apple documents that it does not export movies as MP4

How do I convert a H.264 MOV to MP4 by changing the extension?

Use this shortcut only when the file’s video codec is H.264 and you want the same resolution and file size. Keep the original until the renamed copy has played and uploaded successfully.

  1. In Finder, select the MOV file and choose File > Get Info.
  2. Expand the information that identifies the video codec. Confirm that the video is H.264.
  3. Make a duplicate before changing anything: select the file, choose File > Duplicate, and work on the copy.
  4. Rename the duplicate so its suffix changes from .mov to .mp4. If macOS asks whether you are sure about changing the extension, confirm the change.
  5. Open the new MP4 in the application or upload it to the website that previously rejected the MOV.
  6. Check both picture and sound. If playback fails, restore the original and use iMovie or FFmpeg instead.

Apple’s shortcut does not resize the movie, lower its bitrate or otherwise optimize it. It is useful for compatibility problems caused by the container name, not for making a large recording smaller.

How do I convert MOV to MP4 with iMovie?

Use iMovie when the MOV is not H.264, when the renamed file is rejected, or when you need a new resolution or file size. iMovie creates a separate exported movie, so the source remains available for another attempt.

  1. Open iMovie and create a new movie project, or open an existing project.
  2. Import the MOV into the project’s media area.
  3. Place the clip in the project timeline if iMovie requires a timeline before export.
  4. Choose the project’s Share or Export command. The exact label and available controls depend on the iMovie version installed on the Mac.
  5. Select the MP4-compatible export option offered by your version of iMovie. Choose a lower resolution or quality setting if the destination has a size limit; retain the source resolution when quality is more important.
  6. Choose a destination and save the export with a new filename.
  7. Open the exported file and test it in the intended website, app or device before deleting the original.

What iMovie changes

An iMovie export is a new movie, not a renamed copy. Export settings can alter the encoded streams, dimensions and resulting file size. Re-encoding can also change quality, so compare the exported picture and sound with the source before publishing.

Can QuickTime Player convert MOV to MP4?

No. Apple’s QuickTime Player guide explicitly says, “QuickTime Player doesn’t export movies as MP4 videos.” QuickTime Player can open and export movies through the formats and resolutions its current workflow provides, but it should not be presented as an MP4 converter.

If QuickTime Player opens the MOV, use it to confirm that the source plays correctly, then use the Finder shortcut only for an H.264 file or export through iMovie when a new MP4-compatible file is required. Do not assume that a QuickTime export with a different resolution has produced an MP4 container.

How do I convert MOV to MP4 with FFmpeg?

FFmpeg provides two fundamentally different approaches. A remux copies the existing encoded streams into a new container. A re-encode decodes and creates new streams. Inspect the input first and choose the least destructive method that satisfies the destination’s requirements.

1. Inspect the MOV before converting

Run:

ffprobe -hide_banner input.mov

Look at the video and audio codec names, dimensions, frame rate and the list of tracks. A file can contain several audio, subtitle or data tracks; decide which ones the destination actually needs.

2. Remux compatible streams without re-encoding

When the streams are accepted by MP4 and the problem is only the container, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0 -c copy output.mp4

-map 0 asks FFmpeg to include all input streams, while -c copy copies them instead of encoding them again. This is fast and avoids an additional lossy generation, but it cannot make an unsupported codec, subtitle type or data track acceptable. If the command reports that a stream cannot be written to MP4, inspect the tracks and either select compatible streams or re-encode.

3. Re-encode for wider compatibility

For a conventional H.264/AAC MP4, a starting command is:

ffmpeg -i input.mov -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4

This creates new video and audio streams. It may be necessary when the original codec is not accepted, but it takes longer and can change quality and file size. A re-encode is also the appropriate route when you need a different resolution; for example, add a scale filter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -i input.mov -vf scale=1280:-2 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4

The scale expression keeps the aspect ratio while targeting a 1280-pixel width. Review the output dimensions and playback rather than assuming that every source aspect ratio or rotation metadata will be handled identically by every player.

4. Preserve or select the tracks you need

If the MOV has multiple audio tracks, map the intended one explicitly. For example:

ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4

Use the stream information from ffprobe to choose the correct indexes. Dropping a language track, subtitle track or timecode track may make the output unsuitable for an editing workflow even though ordinary playback works.

5. Verify the output

Run ffprobe -hide_banner output.mp4, then play the file in the application or upload service that matters to you. Confirm the image, audio channels, duration, dimensions and any required subtitles. A command completing without an error proves that FFmpeg wrote a file; it does not prove that your destination accepts every stream in it.

How do I choose between remuxing and re-encoding?

Choose a remux when the encoded streams are already compatible and you only need an MP4 container. Choose a re-encode when the codec or track is incompatible, or when the goal includes a new resolution, bitrate or file-size target.

  • Use the Finder shortcut: the source is H.264, the target only objects to the MOV suffix, and unchanged dimensions and size are acceptable.
  • Use iMovie: you prefer a graphical Mac workflow, need an exported copy, or want to choose a different size or resolution.
  • Use FFmpeg remuxing: you are comfortable with a terminal and have confirmed that the streams can be written to MP4 without encoding.
  • Use FFmpeg re-encoding: the destination needs a different codec, dimensions or controlled output settings.

What problems can occur after conversion?

The website still rejects the renamed file

Renaming did not change the streams. Inspect the codec and tracks, then export with iMovie or re-encode with FFmpeg using codecs the destination documents as supported.

The MP4 has video but no sound

The audio stream may not be accepted even if the video is. Use an export that creates AAC audio, or map and re-encode the required audio stream with FFmpeg.

The output is still too large

An extension change and a remux preserve the original size. Use iMovie’s quality or resolution controls, or re-encode with a scale filter and a bitrate or quality setting appropriate for the upload limit.

The picture is stretched or cropped

Check the source and output dimensions with ffprobe. Preserve the aspect ratio when scaling, and inspect rotation metadata if the source was recorded on a phone.

The converted file plays locally but fails on the target device

Local players often support more codecs and tracks than a website, phone or smart-TV app. Test the exact output in the destination and simplify the file by selecting one compatible video and audio stream if necessary.

How do I keep the original MOV safe?

  1. Store the source in a separate folder and make a duplicate before a Finder extension change.
  2. Give every export a distinct name such as clip-mp4-1080p.mp4 rather than overwriting the MOV.
  3. Keep the original until the MP4 has been opened, checked for synchronized audio and accepted by the destination.
  4. For valuable footage, retain the source even after publishing; an MP4 export may have lower quality or fewer tracks than the camera original.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will converting MOV to MP4 reduce quality?

A Finder extension change or a stream-copy remux does not encode the media again, so it does not introduce another generation of compression. An iMovie or FFmpeg re-encode creates new streams and can change quality depending on its export settings.

Why is my MP4 extension hidden in Finder?

macOS can hide filename extensions. In Finder, open Finder > Settings > Advanced and enable the option to show all filename extensions, then rename only the suffix while leaving the base filename unchanged.

Does MP4 always mean H.264 video?

No. MP4 is a container and can hold different video and audio codecs. A destination may require a particular combination, such as H.264 video with AAC audio, so inspect or export the streams rather than relying on the suffix alone.
