Overview

Hornbill IT Asset Management is a cloud service for managing hardware, software, cloud, and on-premise assets through their lifecycle. It is best suited to organizations that want asset records connected to IT workflows and service management. Its breadth is a strength, but custom pricing makes it harder to assess against a fixed budget.

Key features

Discovery and service context

Automated discovery covers cloud and on-premise hardware and software, with imports, ownership tracking, service mapping, and dependency mapping to connect assets to the services and relationships around them. This is more useful than a bare inventory for teams that need to understand operational impact; organizations seeking only a lightweight asset register may not need that scope.

Licenses, contracts, and costs

The license view compares licenses owned with licenses in use, helping teams monitor spend and prepare for vendor audits. Contract tracking and reporting for capital, operating, and support costs add useful oversight for IT finance and procurement. These controls suit organizations managing a sizable estate, though no specific audit or savings outcome is guaranteed.

Workflow and employee services

Drag-and-drop or codeless workflows can automate IT asset processes such as application provisioning and patch deployment. A shared data model is intended to let ITAM, IT operations, IT service management, and security teams share information; hundreds of codeless integrations are described, with Microsoft Intune as one example. Employee self-service, an employee portal, service and request catalogs, knowledge bases, omnichannel case intake, SLA tracking, and HR capabilities extend the service beyond asset administrators. That breadth may be valuable across departments, but is more than a team wanting asset tracking alone requires.

Security and support

Hornbill states that its data centers hold SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 Type II certifications. Browser traffic to an instance uses HTTPS/SSL encryption, and other data in transit uses secure protocols. The subscription includes the Essential Success Plan: 24×7 online help for critical availability issues, community forums, knowledge resources, APIs, and up to three named contacts. Paid Premier and Custom Concierge plans are also offered.

Pricing

Hornbill IT Asset Management has custom pricing tailored to requirements, with scalable packages. No price, seat allowance, free-plan cap, or trial term is given, so buyers should request a quote and establish how package scope and support needs affect the total cost. The product is classified as paid despite a free-plan flag; no free-tier terms are established, so budget on the basis of a paid subscription rather than assuming a usable no-cost option.

Because there are no public plan tiers or prices to compare, a smaller team cannot readily determine whether it can buy only core asset functions, while a larger organization should clarify which discovery, workflow, integrations, and support options are included before committing. Essential support is included in the subscription; Premier and Custom Concierge are paid options.

Platforms

The product supports web, Android, iOS, Windows, and API access, and its deployment is cloud-based. Hornbill's ITOM discovery service runs through a downloadable Site Integration Service for Windows Server, so cloud delivery does not mean discovery is entirely without a local component.

Who it's for

Hornbill is a strong fit for organizations that need to connect asset discovery and license oversight with service mapping, workflow automation, and employee-facing service processes. Its shared data model and integration approach are particularly relevant when ITAM data must serve operations, service management, and security teams. It is a weaker fit for buyers who need a simple inventory, transparent entry-level pricing, or a confirmed free plan.

Pros and cons

Pros: Automated cloud and on-premise discovery gives teams a way to maintain a broad asset picture.
Pros: License, contract, ownership, and cost tracking bring operational and financial oversight into the same product.
Pros: Codeless workflows, integrations, and shared data support cross-team processes without limiting the product to inventory management.
Pros: The subscription includes critical-issue online assistance and named contacts.
Cons: Custom pricing and the absence of clear free-plan terms make cost and entry-level suitability difficult to judge before a sales conversation.
Cons: The Windows Server integration service adds a local component to an otherwise cloud deployment for ITOM discovery.
Cons: The feature breadth may be unnecessary overhead for teams that only need to track a small asset collection.

Alternatives

For organizations whose primary need is HR case handling rather than IT asset management, LBi HR HelpDesk offers a freemium option: its free plan covers up to 100 employees and two administrative users with no expiration date, while its ProPlus price is not public. It is a more budget-defined starting point for small HR teams, though it does not match Hornbill's stated ITAM scope.

Matrix42 FastViewer is a paid alternative with a free trial and a listed price of 540.00 EUR per year per concurrent session, plus 19% VAT; consider it when that session-based pricing and its product scope fit better. For HR case management, Sunrise HRCM is another paid option with a free trial and quote-based pricing. Applaud HR Case Management is priced per user per month and starts at 500 users, making it relevant to large HR deployments rather than small teams.

Ivanti Neurons for Enterprise Service Management is worth considering when a buyer wants a wider ESM suite spanning ITSM, HR, facilities, GRC, PPM, and security operations. Neocase HR Case Management uses modular pricing based on employee users and usage for certain features, so it may suit buyers focused on configurable HR case management. Agentforce Contact Center starts at 125.00 USD per month, with a Plus plan at 250.00 USD per month, for teams comparing contact-center pricing and digital or voice channels. Servicely HR Service Delivery is another quote-based HR service option.

Readers comparing adjacent categories may also want the HR Service Delivery Software, Enterprise Service Management Software, IT Knowledge Base Software, IT Service Catalog Software, CMDB Software, and HR Case Management Software categories.

Verdict

Choose Hornbill if your organization needs asset discovery, license and cost oversight, and workflow automation tied to employee and IT service processes. Its principal advantage is the breadth and shared context it brings to asset data. Look elsewhere if straightforward pricing, a demonstrable free tier, or a narrower inventory tool is your priority.
