Video2X is the best starting point for most people in 2026 because it gives you a video-oriented workflow, a GUI, frame interpolation, and multiple Vulkan-backed engines in one project. Choose Real-ESRGAN when you need scriptable restoration, Anime4K for real-time native-1080p anime playback, or waifu2x-ncnn-vulkan and Real-CUGAN when illustrated footage needs explicit denoise, scaling, tiling, and GPU controls. All of these options can run locally, so your clips do not have to leave your computer.
There is no universal quality winner. Source resolution, compression damage, motion, model choice, GPU backend, and temporal artifacts matter more than an advertised 2x or 4x number. The guide below separates video workflows from frame-based tools and explains the practical trade-offs, hardware requirements, licenses, and failure modes.

| realesr-animevideov3 | Anime video processed through Real-ESRGAN | Real-ESRGAN Python or ncnn route | Anime-video restoration model | BSD-3-Clause project |
| RealESRGAN_x4plus_anime_6B | Anime images or extracted frames | Real-ESRGAN inference pipeline | Anime-focused 4x model | BSD-3-Clause project |
| Anime4K | Real-time playback enhancement | Real-time algorithms; implementation-dependent GPU path | Designed for native 1080p anime | MIT |
| waifu2x-ncnn-vulkan | Illustrated or anime footage needing fine controls | Portable Vulkan binaries | Denoise levels, 1x–32x scale, tiling, GPU selection | MIT |
| Real-CUGAN ncnn Vulkan | Anime upscaling with denoise and tile controls | Portable Vulkan converter | Denoise, 1x/2x/3x/4x, tile size, GPU and synchronization-gap controls | MIT |
The two Real-ESRGAN model rows are model choices within the same project, not separate repositories. They are listed separately because selecting the model is often the most consequential decision in an anime workflow.

1. Video2X: the broadest video-first workflow
Video2X is the most approachable choice when you want one application to manage video super-resolution and optional frame interpolation. Its project describes itself as a machine-learning video super-resolution and frame-interpolation framework, and documents a GUI rather than requiring every operation to be assembled manually.
What it does
The filtering mode handles upscaling, while the interpolation mode can increase motion smoothness by generating additional frames. Video2X can call Vulkan-backed Anime4K, Real-ESRGAN, Real-CUGAN, and RIFE engines, allowing you to switch models without rebuilding your entire workflow.
Platforms and hardware
The documented acceleration path is Vulkan. Compatible Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA graphics hardware can therefore be used when its drivers expose a working Vulkan implementation. Check operating-system support, driver versions, and available graphics memory before starting a long encode.
Cost and limits
Video2X is open source and does not require a paid plan or trial. Its GNU AGPL-3.0 license matters if you distribute modified versions or operate it as a hosted service; personal local processing is a different situation from redistribution. The project combines several engines, but that does not guarantee identical quality or speed across them. Frame interpolation also solves a different problem from spatial upscaling and can create motion artifacts around cuts, flashes, or occlusions.
Best use
Start here for a mixed library containing live action and anime, especially when you want a GUI and a single project that can manage both enlargement and interpolation. For a repeatable batch pipeline or unusual preprocessing, Real-ESRGAN’s direct interfaces may be easier to script.
2. Real-ESRGAN: the general-restoration and scripting baseline
Real-ESRGAN is designed for practical general image and video restoration. It is the strongest baseline when the source is live action, compressed, noisy, or otherwise degraded and you want control from Python or a command line rather than a playback shader.
Recommended Free Tools
What it does
The project provides Python inference using PyTorch 1.7 or newer and also supplies portable ncnn executables. The model family includes general restoration, an anime-video model, and an anime-image model, so you can match the model to the material instead of assuming one checkpoint fits every clip.
Platforms and hardware
The Python path is suitable for users already working in a PyTorch environment. The portable ncnn path is documented for Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA GPUs and does not require a CUDA or PyTorch installation. That makes an NVIDIA card optional, not mandatory.
Cost and limits
The project is free and uses the BSD-3-Clause license. It is primarily an inference toolkit, so you may need to extract video frames, process them, and reassemble the result with your own media tools. A high scale factor cannot recover detail that was never captured, and frame-by-frame processing requires attention to temporal consistency: a model that looks excellent on one still can shimmer across a sequence.
Best use
Choose Real-ESRGAN for scripted jobs, general footage, restoration experiments, or systems where a portable executable is preferable to a CUDA stack. Preview a representative section before committing to an entire movie.

realesr-animevideov3 is the Real-ESRGAN model choice for anime video. It belongs to the Real-ESRGAN project, but naming it separately is useful because model selection changes the look, artifact profile, and suitability of the output.
What it does
This model is intended for anime-video restoration rather than broad live-action restoration. Use it when line art, flat colors, and animated textures dominate the source. It can be invoked through the project’s Python inference route or its portable ncnn route.
Platforms and hardware
Because it runs inside Real-ESRGAN, the same deployment choices apply: PyTorch 1.7 or newer for the Python route, or portable ncnn executables for Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA GPUs without CUDA or PyTorch.
Cost and limits
There is no subscription or paid tier. The BSD-3-Clause project license governs the surrounding software. This is not a guarantee that every anime source will improve: heavily block-compressed DVD material, blended fields, and unusual film-grain patterns can still produce halos or unstable fine lines. Compare a short clip against another model before processing a long episode.

Best use
Use it when your source is clearly animated and you want Real-ESRGAN’s automation or portable execution without choosing the general model. For real-time playback, Anime4K may be a better fit.
4. RealESRGAN_x4plus_anime_6B: an anime-image model for frame workflows
RealESRGAN_x4plus_anime_6B is the anime-image model in the Real-ESRGAN family. It is most naturally used on extracted frames or still artwork, where you can inspect individual results and control the surrounding video pipeline yourself.
What it does
The model targets anime imagery and a 4x enlargement workflow. It can be useful for title cards, illustrations, or video frames with strong drawn edges, but a still-image model does not automatically provide temporal stabilization for moving footage.
Platforms and hardware
Run it through Real-ESRGAN’s Python/PyTorch inference or its portable ncnn executables. The portable route supports Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA GPUs without a CUDA or PyTorch environment; the Python route requires PyTorch 1.7 or newer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Cost and limits
The model is available as part of the free, BSD-3-Clause Real-ESRGAN project. The 4x label describes the intended scale, not the amount of genuine detail recovered. On video, process a short sequence first and watch for frame-to-frame flicker, changing line thickness, or texture that appears and disappears.
Best use
Pick this model for anime stills, artwork, and controlled frame-based jobs. For an entire animated video where temporal behavior is the priority, use the anime-video model or a video-oriented front end.
5. Anime4K: real-time enhancement for native 1080p anime
Anime4K is a set of open-source, high-quality real-time anime upscaling and denoising algorithms that can be implemented in any programming language. It is the right choice when you want playback enhancement with low latency rather than an offline restoration render.
What it does
The project is optimized for anime that is already natively 1080p and encoded with common codecs. It enhances the image as it plays instead of requiring a new high-resolution file, which is useful for watching a library on a higher-resolution display.
Platforms and hardware
Anime4K is an algorithm set rather than one universal application, so the exact player and GPU requirements depend on the implementation you choose. Verify that your chosen player exposes a compatible shader or filter path and that your graphics driver supports it.
Cost and limits
Anime4K is MIT licensed and free to use. Its documentation explicitly warns that it is not optimized for 720p, 480p, or standard-definition anime. Older DVD-era material, severe compression, and badly damaged sources are better candidates for a slower restoration model.
Best use
Use Anime4K for real-time viewing of clean, native-1080p anime. Do not select it simply because the destination display says 4K; the source characteristics matter more than the display’s pixel count.
6. waifu2x-ncnn-vulkan: maximum control for illustrated content
waifu2x-ncnn-vulkan is a portable Vulkan converter for anime and illustrated material. It is particularly attractive when you want explicit command-line control over denoising, scale, tiling, and GPU selection.
What it does
The converter exposes denoise levels and scale factors from 1x through 32x. Tiling lets you process large frames in smaller pieces when memory is limited, while GPU selection helps systems with more than one graphics adapter.
Platforms and hardware
Portable binaries are documented for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Vulkan support is listed across Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, and Apple-Silicon GPUs, subject to a working driver and operating-system combination.

- Region of Interest Function: Enables cropping up to four areas from a single 4K video source for enhanced production flexibility
Cost and limits
The project is free and MIT licensed. It is a frame converter, not a complete video editor: for a video file, plan a frame-extraction and reassembly pipeline or use a front end that automates those stages. Very large scale values can magnify ringing, line noise, and compression blocks, and small tile sizes increase overhead.
Best use
Choose waifu2x-ncnn-vulkan for drawings, sprites, manga-like frames, or anime where denoise strength and tiling need to be explicit. Keep a lossless or high-quality intermediate sequence until the final encode.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Real-CUGAN ncnn Vulkan: anime upscaling with synchronization controls
Real-CUGAN ncnn Vulkan is another MIT-licensed Vulkan converter aimed at anime-focused enhancement. Its control set overlaps with waifu2x, but it adds a synchronization-gap mode that can be useful when tuning GPU execution.
What it does
The documented options include denoise level, 1x, 2x, 3x, and 4x scaling, tile size, GPU selection, and synchronization-gap mode. Treat it as an anime specialist rather than a general live-action restorer.
Platforms and hardware
The Vulkan implementation supports Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, and Apple-Silicon GPUs when the system provides compatible drivers. It is portable, so you do not need a CUDA or PyTorch installation solely to run the converter.
Cost and limits
Real-CUGAN ncnn Vulkan is free and MIT licensed. It still requires a video wrapper for extraction and reassembly when the source is a movie or episode. Denoising that is too strong can erase intentional line texture, while aggressive scaling can emphasize ringing; compare short representative clips before a long encode.
Best use
Use Real-CUGAN when anime is the priority and you want bounded 1x–4x scaling, denoise, tile, GPU, and synchronization controls in a Vulkan tool.
How do you choose between these upscalers?
Start with the source, then decide whether you need offline rendering or real-time playback. The following checks prevent most mismatches.
Identify the footage type
- Live action: begin with Real-ESRGAN’s general restoration model or Video2X using a suitable backend.
- Clean 1080p anime: Anime4K is designed for real-time playback enhancement.
- Low-resolution or damaged anime: compare
realesr-animevideov3, waifu2x-ncnn-vulkan, and Real-CUGAN on a short clip. - Illustrations or extracted frames: waifu2x-ncnn-vulkan or
RealESRGAN_x4plus_anime_6Bprovide image-focused controls.
Decide whether you need a new file
Anime4K can enhance playback without producing a replacement encode. Video2X and the Real-ESRGAN, waifu2x, and Real-CUGAN converters are better suited to creating processed files, although the converter projects require you to assemble the frame workflow yourself.
Check temporal risk
Spatial models judge frames independently unless a video-specific pipeline adds temporal handling. Watch for shimmer, crawling grain, changing line weight, and halos around moving objects. Video2X’s video workflow and anime-video model are more natural starting points when sequence stability is more important than a perfect still frame.

Match controls to the job
Use waifu2x or Real-CUGAN when denoise, tile size, scale, and GPU selection need to be visible and repeatable. Use Video2X when you prefer a GUI and want to combine upscaling with optional interpolation. Use Real-ESRGAN when code, batch processing, or portable executables matter most.
What hardware and software setup do you need?
Vulkan is the common acceleration path in Video2X and the ncnn implementations. The cited projects document Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, and Apple-Silicon support, but the exact result depends on the operating system, driver, and Vulkan implementation.
Preflight checklist
- Install a current graphics driver that exposes Vulkan for your operating system.
- Confirm the GPU appears to the application’s device selector.
- Leave enough graphics memory for the chosen scale and tile size; reduce tile size if frames fail during processing.
- Keep source media and temporary frame files on storage with enough free capacity.
- For Real-ESRGAN’s Python route, install PyTorch 1.7 or newer; use the portable ncnn route if you do not want a CUDA or PyTorch environment.
Do you need an NVIDIA GPU?
No. Vulkan builds of Video2X, waifu2x-ncnn-vulkan, and Real-CUGAN ncnn Vulkan document Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA support, with Apple-Silicon support documented for the ncnn converters. Real-ESRGAN also has a portable ncnn path that avoids a CUDA/PyTorch setup. An NVIDIA CUDA-capable card is one option, not a prerequisite.

Video2X workflow
- Install Video2X and confirm that your Vulkan driver and GPU are detected.
- Open the GUI and choose the input video.
- Select filtering (upscaling), then choose an engine such as Real-ESRGAN, Anime4K, or Real-CUGAN according to the source.
- Set the target scale and output location; enable frame interpolation only when you specifically need a higher frame rate.
- Render a short representative segment and inspect faces, edges, subtitles, motion, and scene cuts.
- Process the full video only after the preview avoids objectionable flicker, halos, or invented texture.
Frame-converter workflow
- Extract frames from a copy of the source while preserving the original frame rate and ordering.
- Choose a model that matches the footage: general Real-ESRGAN for live action,
realesr-animevideov3for anime video, or an anime-image model for artwork. - Set denoise and scale conservatively; use tiling when memory is insufficient.
- Process a short contiguous frame range and inspect it as motion, not only as still images.
- Reassemble the processed frames with the original audio and frame rate, then encode the final delivery file.
What problems should you expect, and how can you fix them?
The output is soft or waxy
Reduce denoise strength, choose a model closer to the source type, and avoid stacking multiple denoisers. Strong restoration can remove grain and line texture along with compression noise.
Edges shimmer between frames
Try a video-oriented model or Video2X workflow, lower the scale, and compare a shorter clip. Frame-by-frame anime-image processing is especially vulnerable to changing line decisions.
The process runs out of memory
Lower the tile size, reduce the scale, close other GPU workloads, or process fewer frames concurrently. A smaller tile can complete a job at the cost of additional overhead.
Vulkan is unavailable
Update the graphics driver, verify that the operating system supports the GPU’s Vulkan implementation, and check that the application is using the intended adapter. Real-ESRGAN’s Python/PyTorch route is an alternative when a Vulkan path cannot be made reliable.
Playback enhancement looks worse on old material
Anime4K is optimized for native 1080p and is not optimized for 720p, 480p, or standard-definition anime. Use an offline restoration model for low-resolution or heavily degraded sources.
What do the open-source licenses allow?
Video2X uses GNU AGPL-3.0; Real-ESRGAN uses BSD-3-Clause; Anime4K, waifu2x-ncnn-vulkan, and Real-CUGAN ncnn Vulkan use MIT licenses. Personal use is only one case: redistribution of modified software and offering a hosted service can trigger obligations that differ by license.
Read the complete license text and the licenses of bundled dependencies before shipping a modified application, embedding a converter in a commercial service, or distributing binaries. The software being free to download does not remove those responsibilities.
Is 4K upscaling able to restore missing detail?
Upscaling increases the output dimensions and estimates plausible detail; it cannot recover information that was never captured. A clean 1080p source may benefit from a moderate enlargement, while a noisy 480p source can expose artifacts at 4K. Preview the target content at normal viewing distance before choosing an extreme scale.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upscale video locally without uploading it?
Yes. Video2X, Real-ESRGAN, Anime4K implementations, waifu2x-ncnn-vulkan, and Real-CUGAN ncnn Vulkan are designed to run on your own computer. Local processing keeps source files under your control, but temporary extracted frames and output files still need storage and should be cleaned up when no longer needed.
Which open-source upscaler is best for live-action footage?
Real-ESRGAN is the clearest starting point because its stated scope is general image and video restoration and it offers both Python and portable ncnn paths. Video2X is useful when you want a GUI and a video-oriented workflow that can switch among several engines.
Is Anime4K suitable for 480p or DVD anime?
Anime4K’s documentation targets native 1080p anime and says it is not optimized for 720p, 480p, or standard-definition material. For older sources, compare an offline restoration model such as the anime-video Real-ESRGAN option, waifu2x, or Real-CUGAN on a representative clip.
Do Vulkan upscalers work on Apple Silicon?
The ncnn Vulkan implementations document Apple-Silicon support, alongside Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA hardware. You still need a compatible operating-system driver and should verify that the application detects the intended GPU before processing.
What is the difference between upscaling and frame interpolation?
Upscaling increases spatial resolution, such as converting 1080p frames to a larger output. Frame interpolation generates additional frames to raise motion smoothness; Video2X documents both modes, but interpolation can introduce artifacts around cuts and complex occlusions, so enable it only when a higher frame rate is actually needed.
