Shutter Encoder is the best free HandBrake alternative for most people because it combines familiar local transcoding with trimming, subtitles, filters, analysis and other FFmpeg-based tools. Choose FFmpeg when you need scripts or server automation, VidCoder for a focused Windows queue, LosslessCut for cuts without re-encoding, MakeMKV for extracting owned DVDs and Blu-rays, Avidemux for simple edits, XMedia Recode for detailed Windows tuning, and Adobe Media Encoder for Premiere Pro and After Effects pipelines.

These applications do different jobs. A lossless cutter is not a compression encoder, and a disc-ingest tool is not a replacement for a complete production renderer. The comparison below matches each option to the workflow it actually supports.

What is the best HandBrake alternative?

There is no single winner for every workflow. Shutter Encoder is the strongest all-round graphical choice; FFmpeg offers the deepest automation and stream control; VidCoder keeps a HandBrake-style encoding engine behind a Windows-focused interface; and the remaining tools solve more specific problems.

Tool Best for Primary operation Platforms Free or paid Main limitation
Shutter Encoder Broad free desktop workflow Transcoding, editing and media utilities Windows, macOS, Linux Free Broader interface can feel less focused than HandBrake
FFmpeg Scripts, servers and exact control Command-line conversion, filtering and streaming Windows, macOS, Linux and other supported systems Free and open source Requires command-line knowledge
VidCoder Windows batch encoding Transcoding and DVD/Blu-ray workflows Windows Open source Does not defeat commercial-disc encryption
LosslessCut Fast cuts and joins Lossless trimming and remuxing Windows, macOS, Linux Free Compatible streams are required; re-encoding is outside its core purpose
MakeMKV Owned DVD/Blu-ray extraction Disc reading and MKV creation Windows, macOS, Linux DVD opening is free; all features are free during beta Produces large source files rather than compressed delivery copies
Avidemux One-off cuts and basic filters Simple editing and encoding Windows, macOS, Linux Free Not a full nonlinear editor
XMedia Recode Windows parameter tuning Conversion, GPU encoding and disc conversion Windows Free Copy-protected discs are not supported
Adobe Media Encoder Adobe production teams Transcoding, proxies, watch folders and publishing Windows, macOS Paid Adobe application Overkill for occasional personal conversion

No dated independent speed or quality benchmark establishes one universal fastest or highest-quality option. Actual results depend on the source, codec, preset, hardware encoder, drivers and target quality.

How do I convert videos without HandBrake?

First decide whether you need a new encode, a container change, a physical-disc extraction or only a cut. Then choose the tool that performs that operation directly.

  1. Inspect the source. Use FFmpeg’s ffprobe, or the media-information view in a graphical application, to identify the video codec, frame rate, audio tracks, subtitles and container.
  2. Choose the least destructive operation. Use LosslessCut or Shutter Encoder’s supported “Cut without re-encoding” mode for compatible cuts. Use a full encoder when changing resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate or audio format.
  3. Select a container and codecs. MP4 is broadly compatible with phones and browsers; MKV is useful when you need multiple audio or subtitle tracks. VidCoder, FFmpeg, Shutter Encoder and XMedia Recode expose H.264, HEVC/H.265 or AV1 choices in different ways.
  4. Pick software or hardware encoding. Hardware paths from Nvidia NVENC, Intel Quick Sync or AMD VCE can reduce processing time on supported systems, but codec availability, driver versions and quality targets determine whether they are suitable.
  5. Preserve required streams. Confirm that the output includes the intended audio language, subtitle tracks, chapters and metadata before deleting the source.
  6. Queue and verify. Batch queues, watch folders and scripts are useful for repeat work. Open the resulting file on the devices that matter to you and check synchronization, subtitles and seeking.

1. Shutter Encoder: who is it for?

Shutter Encoder is the closest free graphical substitute when you want HandBrake-like conversion plus a wider FFmpeg toolbox. The project describes it as “A converter designed by video editors.” Its current version identified in the project material is 20.4.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What it does

It converts media while also handling common editorial and interchange tasks. The feature set includes trimming, a “Cut without re-encoding” mode for some codecs, subtitle embedding and burn-in, a subtitle editor, cropping, overlays and watermarks, color adjustment, LUTs, color-space conversion, duplicate-frame detection, frame-rate interpolation, analysis and deinterlacing.

Platforms and cost

Shutter Encoder is a free desktop application with builds for Windows, macOS and Linux. It uses FFmpeg, which gives it support for a very broad range of codecs and containers.

Limits to understand

The breadth is also the trade-off. Someone who only wants a small set of encoding presets may find its interface busier than HandBrake’s focused workflow. Its lossless-cut mode applies only to supported codecs and stream arrangements; changing a codec or applying many filters still requires a re-encode.

2. FFmpeg: who is it for?

FFmpeg is the best alternative when repeatability, automation or exact stream control matters more than a graphical interface. Its project README calls it “a collection of libraries and tools to process multimedia content such as audio, video, subtitles and related metadata.”

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What it does

The ffmpeg command converts, filters, muxes, demuxes, records and streams media. ffprobe inspects streams and metadata before you build a command. You can map particular audio or subtitle tracks, apply filters, preserve or remove metadata, set deterministic encoding parameters and run jobs from scripts, cron tasks or a server application.

Platforms and cost

FFmpeg is free and open source, with packages and builds for Windows, macOS, Linux and other supported operating systems. The command-line design makes it suitable for headless systems where a desktop application is impractical.

Limits to understand

There is no beginner-oriented preset wizard comparable to a consumer GUI. A malformed filter graph, incorrect stream map or incompatible codec option can produce an unusable file, so keep a small test command and inspect the output with ffprobe before scaling up a batch.

3. VidCoder: who is it for?

VidCoder is the focused Windows choice for people who want queues, previews and target-size controls without leaving a HandBrake-derived encoding workflow. The project describes it as “an open-source DVD/Blu-ray ripping and video transcoding application for Windows.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What it does

VidCoder supports MP4 and MKV output and codecs including AV1, H.265/HEVC and H.264, along with other formats. Its controls include target bitrate, target size and quality-based encoding, multi-pass encoding, batch and simultaneous encodes, folder watching, subtitle and audio pickers, previews, pause and resume, and processing without creating huge intermediate files.

Hardware and versions

The application exposes AMD VCE, Nvidia NVENC and Intel Quick Sync hardware encoders when the system and selected codec support them. The project material lists stable version 12.23 and beta version 13.13; those labels describe the project releases identified on October 28, 2026, not a promise that every user should install the beta.

Cost and limits

VidCoder is open source. It runs on Windows, and its workflow is centered on local files, folders and optical media. It does not defeat commercial-disc encryption; use a separate disc-ingest tool for media you own, then encode the resulting files.

4. LosslessCut: who is it for?

LosslessCut is the right choice when the job is trimming, splitting or joining compatible streams without a quality-changing encode. Its repository describes it as “The swiss army knife of lossless video/audio editing.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What it does

It focuses on rapid cuts and remuxing. Because the compressed video and audio packets are copied rather than decoded and re-encoded, the operation can be much faster and avoids another generation of compression loss. It is useful for removing unwanted sections, extracting clips, splitting long recordings and joining compatible segments.

Platforms and cost

LosslessCut is a free desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Limits to understand

Lossless editing is constrained by keyframes and stream compatibility. A cut may move to a nearby keyframe, and files with incompatible codecs, variable stream layouts or effects that require new frames need a conventional encoder instead. Treat it as a companion to HandBrake-style transcoding, not as a general compression replacement.

5. MakeMKV: who is it for?

MakeMKV is the specialist first step for converting owned DVD and Blu-ray discs into files that other encoders can process. The vendor describes it as “your one-click solution to convert video that you own into free and patents-unencumbered format that can be played everywhere.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What it does

MakeMKV reads DVDs and Blu-rays and preserves the selected video and audio tracks, chapters and metadata in an MKV file. Conversion speed is limited mainly by the optical drive’s reading speed. The resulting MKV is an archival or intermediate source; use Shutter Encoder, FFmpeg, VidCoder or another encoder afterward when you need a smaller file or a different delivery format.

Platforms and cost

MakeMKV has versions for Windows, macOS and Linux. Opening DVDs is free, and the vendor states that all features, including Blu-ray decryption and processing, are free during the beta period.

Disc and hardware limits

You need an optical drive that can read the disc format. An external USB Blu-ray drive is a practical accessory for computers without an internal drive, but the hardware itself does not bypass copy protection. Use MakeMKV only with discs you own and are legally permitted to process.

6. Avidemux: who is it for?

Avidemux is a free editor for simple cutting, filtering and encoding when a full nonlinear editor would be excessive. It supports AVI, DVD-compatible MPEG, MP4, ASF and other formats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What it does

For a single file, you can mark sections, apply basic filters, choose an output codec and save the result. Avidemux also documents project files, a job queue and scripting, so repeated straightforward operations do not have to be performed manually every time.

Platforms and cost

Avidemux is free and available for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Limits and release context

Its scope is intentionally modest. It is not designed for multi-track timeline editing, elaborate compositing or a large collaborative production. The official news entries identified here are version 2.8.1 from September 23, 2022, and version 2.8.0 from December 28, 2021; those dates should not be presented as a current 2026 release announcement.

7. XMedia Recode: who is it for?

XMedia Recode is a Windows alternative for users who want extensive parameter controls, batch conversion and GPU-assisted encoding in one interface. The project page lists version 3.6.4.1 in an update dated September 26, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What it does

It supports formats and codecs including H.264, HEVC/H.265, SVT-AV1, MKV and MP4. Tools include cutting, rotating, scaling, subtitle addition and extraction, audio extraction, batch jobs and conversion of unprotected DVDs and Blu-rays.

Hardware and cost

XMedia Recode documents AMD, Nvidia and Intel GPU acceleration. The application is free and runs on Windows.

Limits to understand

Hardware encoding is conditional on the installed GPU, driver, selected codec and quality target; the presence of an acceleration option does not guarantee a better result for every file. The project explicitly says copy-protected discs are not supported, so it is not a substitute for a protected-disc workflow.

8. Adobe Media Encoder: who is it for?

Adobe Media Encoder is the paid choice for professional teams already working in Premiere Pro or After Effects. Adobe positions it around “Rock solid rendering” and tight integration with its production applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What it does

It ingests and transcodes media, creates proxies, outputs to a wide range of formats, automates jobs with presets and Watch Folders, publishes to destinations, and applies Time Tuner, LUT and loudness corrections. Watch Folders are useful when a team drops source media into a monitored location and expects consistent preset-based output.

Platforms and cost

Media Encoder runs on Windows and macOS as a paid Adobe application. The material here does not specify a single universal price; subscription cost depends on the Adobe plan and region.

Limits to understand

For occasional home conversion, its production features can add unnecessary cost and complexity. Its advantage appears when proxies, watch folders, publishing destinations and shared Adobe project workflows save more time than a lightweight converter would.

Which HandBrake alternative works on Windows and Mac?

Shutter Encoder, FFmpeg, LosslessCut, MakeMKV, Avidemux and Adobe Media Encoder support both Windows and macOS. VidCoder and XMedia Recode are Windows choices, so they are unsuitable when the same workflow must run natively on a Mac.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cross-platform support does not mean identical codec behavior. Hardware encoders are exposed through the operating system, GPU drivers and integrated graphics available on each machine. A project file or command may therefore need small adjustments when moved between systems.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What is the best free HandBrake alternative without watermarks?

Shutter Encoder, FFmpeg, VidCoder, LosslessCut, MakeMKV, Avidemux and XMedia Recode are free options in the workflows described here, and none is presented as adding a watermark. Choose based on the operation rather than the absence of branding: Shutter Encoder is the broadest GUI, FFmpeg is the most scriptable, and LosslessCut avoids encoding when a compatible cut is all you need.

Can I rip Blu-ray discs with HandBrake alternatives?

MakeMKV is the dedicated disc-extraction step for owned DVDs and Blu-rays. It preserves tracks, chapters and metadata in MKV, after which VidCoder, Shutter Encoder or FFmpeg can create a compressed or more widely compatible copy.

VidCoder describes itself as a DVD/Blu-ray ripping application but states that it does not defeat commercial-disc encryption. XMedia Recode likewise supports unprotected DVDs and Blu-rays and explicitly excludes copy-protected discs. A suitable optical drive is required, and an external USB Blu-ray drive is useful for computers without one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best HandBrake alternative for batch encoding?

FFmpeg is strongest when a repeatable script, server process or application integration is the goal. VidCoder provides batch and simultaneous encodes, folder watching, pause and resume, and queue controls in a Windows GUI. Shutter Encoder offers render workflows, while Adobe Media Encoder adds presets and Watch Folders for production teams.

For a batch that must be reproducible months later, record the source properties, codec, preset, rate-control mode, audio mapping and software version. Hardware acceleration can alter quality and compatibility, so keep a software-encoded fallback for jobs where consistency matters more than throughput.

How should I choose between transcoding and lossless cutting?

Use lossless cutting when you only need to remove or rearrange sections and the streams are compatible. Use transcoding when you need a new codec, smaller file, different resolution, burned-in subtitles, filters, frame-rate conversion or broad device compatibility.

Choose lossless cutting when

  • The source already has the desired codec and resolution.
  • You want to avoid another generation of compression loss.
  • A nearby keyframe cut is acceptable.
  • You are trimming or splitting rather than changing the picture or sound.

Choose transcoding when

  • The destination cannot decode the original codec or container.
  • You need to reduce bitrate or resolution.
  • You need to apply deinterlacing, cropping, LUTs, overlays or frame-rate interpolation.
  • You need to burn subtitles or change audio and subtitle stream structure.

How do hardware encoders affect the choice?

VidCoder and XMedia Recode expose AMD, Nvidia and Intel hardware paths, while FFmpeg and other tools can use hardware encoders when the relevant build and system support them. The benefit depends on the GPU or integrated graphics, driver version, selected codec and target quality; no universal speed ranking applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware encoding is often attractive for large queues or live workloads, but software encoding may provide more tuning options or a preferred quality-per-bitrate trade-off for a particular codec. Make one short representative encode, compare it at the intended viewing size, and then commit to a queue.

What should I check when an encode fails?

  • Unsupported codec or container: inspect the input with ffprobe and choose a container that accepts the selected streams.
  • Missing audio or subtitles: verify stream selection and mapping instead of assuming the first track is the correct language.
  • Hardware option unavailable: update the GPU driver, confirm the hardware exposes the selected codec and try a software encoder.
  • Corrupt or unsynchronized output: test a short section, avoid unnecessary frame-rate conversion and preserve the original until verification is complete.
  • Disc not recognized: check drive compatibility and whether the disc is protected; VidCoder and XMedia Recode do not bypass commercial-disc encryption.
  • Unexpectedly large files: confirm that you did not choose a lossless or near-lossless setting when the goal was delivery-size compression.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use FFmpeg without learning complex commands?

Yes. Start with a short command copied into a script and change one variable at a time, then inspect the output with ffprobe. Graphical front ends such as Shutter Encoder or VidCoder are better if you need presets and visual controls rather than repeatable command files.

Will a lossless cut always start and end on the exact frame I select?

Not necessarily. Stream-copy editing is constrained by keyframes and packet boundaries, so the cut can move to a nearby keyframe. Frame-accurate boundaries require decoding and re-encoding the affected section.

Do I need a Blu-ray drive to convert an MKV file?

No. A drive is needed only to read a physical disc. Once you have an MKV on storage, FFmpeg, Shutter Encoder, VidCoder or another encoder can process it without optical hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is AV1 automatically the smallest output?

No. File size depends on the encoder, rate-control settings, resolution, frame complexity and quality target. AV1 support in VidCoder or XMedia Recode is a choice to evaluate for your devices, not a guarantee of a smaller file in every encode.
