Summary

VoltDB is a distributed, in-memory database and real-time decisioning layer for processing data, ingesting streams, running business logic, and integrating AI. Its database partitions data and stored procedures so queries can run in parallel while retaining ACID consistency. Volt Active Data says the system is built to move from data ingest to action in under 10 milliseconds. Clusters can scale by adding nodes, with partitioning automated from the schema. VoltDB connects directly to Kafka or CDC streams and can expose decisions through SQL, REST, or Kafka topics. It supports on-premises, cloud Kubernetes or VM-based, and hybrid deployments. Production databases support Debian 12.11 or later, RHEL 8.8 or later, Rocky Linux 8.8 or later, and Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, or 24.04; macOS 13 or later is supported for development. Enterprise Edition adds command logging, locally replicated partitions, and wide-area database replication. Authentication, role-based authorization, and TLS/SSL or Kerberos communications are available, but security is disabled by default. The free Developer Edition is not intended for production workloads; a free 30-day trial is also listed for Confluent users. Production pricing is available on request.

Who it is for

VoltDB is aimed at companies building or modernizing mission-critical applications, including in financial services, telecommunications, and enterprise technology. It may suit teams working with streaming data that need low-latency decisions across supported deployment types.

What is good

  • Processes queries in parallel while retaining ACID consistency.
  • Clusters can scale by adding nodes.
  • Connects to Kafka or CDC streams.
  • Supports on-premises, cloud, and hybrid deployment.

What to know first

  • Free Developer Edition is not for production workloads.
  • Security is disabled by default.
  • Production pricing is available on request.

Verdict

VoltDB combines stream ingestion and database processing for low-latency decisioning, with several deployment choices. Teams should account for the production restriction on the free edition and enable security controls as needed.
