Summary

Visor Boot Manager is a minimal graphical UEFI boot manager for starting Linux EFI-stub kernels, Unified Kernel Images, and other EFI executables such as Windows. With no configuration, it can find Windows, UKIs, kernels, and BLS/OSTree deployments, and derive a root command line automatically. Its menu supports themes, icons, animations, wallpaper accent colors, mouse, and touch input. It can boot Btrfs, Snapper, Timeshift, and plain snapshots, and browse OSTree deployments with automatic rollback. Visor also supports encrypted boot artifacts and a single-password LUKS handoff. Secure Boot verification works through shim, while the installer supports sbctl signing. The bootloader is a single approximately 340 KB EFI binary without external dependencies or a scripting language. It builds for x86_64 and AArch64 and can be built with listed tools or installed from the Arch User Repository. The project uses the BSD 2-Clause license. It requires UEFI hardware and does not support legacy BIOS.

Who it is for

Visor may suit users who want a customizable UEFI menu for Linux and Windows EFI programs, including snapshot or OSTree boot options. It is not suitable for legacy BIOS hardware.

What is good

  • Detects several boot types without configuration
  • Supports snapshots and OSTree deployment browsing
  • Offers mouse and touch menu input
  • Supports encrypted boot artifacts and Secure Boot verification
  • Builds for x86_64 and AArch64

What to know first

  • Requires UEFI hardware

Verdict

Visor combines automatic boot detection with menu customization and snapshot support in a compact EFI binary. Its UEFI-only requirement is the key compatibility constraint.
