What Testcontainers Desktop is
Testcontainers Desktop is a companion app for the open-source Testcontainers libraries, designed to support local development and testing with real dependencies. It runs in the system tray and lets users switch among local container runtimes such as Podman and Colima. It can also run containers through Testcontainers Cloud on demand, without using local resources or requiring a local Docker daemon. For debugging, users can expose container services on fixed ports, review logs, or open a shell for a configured service. Its beta freeze feature can pause container shutdown after tests so containers remain available for inspection. The app tracks test sessions and offers collaborative dashboards with data from desktop and CI users in an organization. It includes more than 15 sample service configurations, including PostgreSQL and Kafka. The embedded runtime is in beta and available on macOS 11 or later. Testcontainers Desktop supports Compose workflows and IDE integration, but requires Docker account sign-in. The free plan includes 300 minutes of cloud runtime per month; Turbo mode requires a paid account.
Good
- Switch between local runtimes, including Podman and Colima.
- Cloud runs do not require a local Docker daemon.
- Inspect logs and open a service shell.
- Supports Compose workflows and IDE integration.
Watch out
- Docker account sign-in is required.
- Embedded runtime is beta and limited to macOS 11 or later.
- Free plan includes 300 cloud-runtime minutes per month.
- Turbo mode requires a paid account.
Who it suits
It suits developers using Testcontainers who want to manage local or cloud-backed containers and inspect services during testing. The session dashboards may also suit teams combining desktop and CI test data.
Verdict
Testcontainers Desktop brings runtime selection, container inspection, and test-session dashboards into a system-tray app. Check the Docker sign-in requirement and beta limitations against your setup.
