What OpenMeters is

OpenMeters is a free, open-source audio metering and visualization application for Linux. It captures individual PipeWire applications, a selected device, or the default sink, with negotiated layouts supporting up to eight channels. The suite provides loudness meters, waveform visualization, an oscilloscope, spectrogram, spectrum analyzer, and stereometer. Loudness analysis includes BS.1770-5 K-weighted short-term and momentary LUFS modes, true-peak meters, and fast or slow K-weighted RMS readings in decibels. Spectrogram views can use classic STFT rendering or time-frequency reassignment, with piano-roll overlays and ERB, logarithmic, or linear frequency scales. Normal desktop windows work on X11 or Wayland; Wayland bar mode needs a compositor exposing zwlr_layer_shell_v1. OpenMeters requires a graphical Linux session, PipeWire 0.3.77 or newer, and a compatible Vulkan or OpenGL/EGL driver stack. Prebuilt releases require x86_64 GNU/Linux with glibc 2.39 or newer. Installation guidance covers Arch, Debian, Fedora, NixOS, other distributions, and source builds. It is licensed under GPL v3.0 or later.

Good

  • Captures per-application PipeWire audio
  • Supports layouts up to eight channels
  • Includes loudness, spectrum, and waveform views
  • Provides BS.1770-5 LUFS and true-peak metering
  • GPL license permits commercial use under its terms

Watch out

  • Linux only; Windows and macOS support is unlikely
  • Requires PipeWire 0.3.77 or newer
  • Prebuilt releases require x86_64 and glibc 2.39+
  • Wayland bar mode needs specific compositor support

Who it suits

OpenMeters suits Linux users who need real-time PipeWire metering and multiple audio analysis views. It is aimed at systems meeting its graphical, PipeWire, and graphics-driver requirements.

Verdict

OpenMeters offers a broad set of Linux audio meters and visualizers with detailed loudness and spectrogram options. Its platform, PipeWire, graphics, and release-artifact requirements should be checked before installation.
