Metal³
Metal³ is an open-source project for managing bare-metal infrastructure with Kubernetes.
What Metal³ is
Metal³ is an open-source project for managing bare-metal infrastructure with Kubernetes. It can discover and enroll physical machines, inspect hardware, configure BIOS and RAID, clean disks, install operating system images, deploy Kubernetes, and perform rolling upgrades. The Bare Metal Operator manages host provisioning and can operate independently through the Kubernetes API. Cluster API Provider Metal3 enables Cluster API-based clusters on bare-metal infrastructure. Metal³ uses OpenStack Ironic as its provisioning backend; Ironic can run as a standalone service. Supported machines use IPMI or Redfish for remote management, with iPXE network boot or virtual media on compatible hardware. The project supports x86_64 and AARCH64, but mixed-architecture clusters are not supported. Ironic is currently the only supported provisioner. Operating systems must be available in cloud image format, and first-boot customization requires cloud-init or a similar tool. Metal³ is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation incubating project with Linux, API, and self-hosted deployment options.
Good
- Manages bare-metal lifecycle with Kubernetes
- Configures BIOS, RAID, and firmware
- Supports x86_64 and AARCH64
- Offers independent Bare Metal Operator use
- Uses network or virtual-media boot
Watch out
- Mixed-architecture clusters are unsupported
- Only Ironic is supported as provisioner
- Images need cloud image format
- Production security hardening is required
Who it suits
Metal³ suits teams provisioning on-premises Kubernetes nodes and managing bare-metal machines in testing or high-performance computing labs. It fits operators using supported remote-management hardware and Kubernetes-based workflows.
Verdict
Metal³ provides Kubernetes-centered discovery, provisioning, and cluster management for physical servers. Verify hardware protocols, architecture requirements, Ironic dependence, and production security settings before deployment.
