What Graphiti is

Graphiti is an open-source framework for building and querying temporal context graphs for AI agents. Its time-aware facts record when information applies and when it is replaced, allowing queries about the present or a past point in time. New structured and unstructured data can be integrated incrementally rather than rebuilding the entire graph. Graphiti connects derived entities and relationships to their source episodes, and retrieves information through semantic search, keyword search, and graph traversal. Developers can define entity and edge types with Pydantic models or let structure emerge from data. Supported graph backends listed by the project are Neo4j, FalkorDB, and Amazon Neptune; Kuzu is deprecated. It defaults to OpenAI and also supports Anthropic, Google Gemini, and Groq, as well as compatible endpoints for OpenAI-compatible providers. The project includes a FastAPI REST service and an MCP server. Graphiti is self-hosted and self-managed, requires Python 3.10 or later and an LLM API key, and is licensed under Apache-2.0. Anonymous usage statistics are collected, with an option to disable telemetry.

Good

  • Tracks validity windows for present and historical queries.
  • Links derived entities and relationships to source episodes.
  • Combines semantic, keyword, and graph-based retrieval.
  • Supports Neo4j, FalkorDB, and Amazon Neptune backends.

Watch out

  • Requires Python 3.10 or higher and an LLM API key.
  • Self-hosted operation leaves system management to users.
  • Kuzu is marked deprecated.
  • Anonymous usage statistics are collected by default.

Who it suits

Graphiti is suited to developers building AI agents that need time-aware context, provenance, and hybrid retrieval. It fits teams prepared to host and operate the framework and its surrounding system themselves.

Verdict

Graphiti offers temporal graph features and several retrieval paths in a free, open-source framework. Its self-managed deployment and technical requirements make it a better fit for teams able to operate their own system.
