Google Cloud Filestore
Google Cloud Filestore is a fully managed shared NFS file service for applications requiring persistent storage.
What Google Cloud Filestore is
Google Cloud Filestore is a fully managed shared NFS file service for applications requiring persistent storage. It connects with Compute Engine VMs, GKE clusters, Google Cloud VMware Engine, on-premises machines, Cloud Run services, and AI agent fleets or sandboxes. GKE’s CSI driver lets multiple pods share a file system, while Cloud Run can mount an instance as a local directory over NFS. NFSv3 is supported across tiers; NFSv4.1 is available on zonal, regional, and enterprise tiers. Content is encrypted at rest by default, with customer-managed Cloud KMS keys available for listed tiers and backups. NFSv4.1 supports Kerberos authentication, integrity checks, and in-transit encryption; NFSv3 lacks those protections. Filestore offers snapshots, backups, and cross-region replication. Listed capacity reaches 100 TiB, throughput 26 GiB/s, and 920K IOPS. It is paid, with a $300 free-credit trial.
Good
- Managed shared NFS file service
- Integrates with GKE and Cloud Run
- Supports snapshots, backups, and replication
- Encryption at rest by default
- Capacity listed up to 100 TiB
Watch out
- No free plan
- Pricing varies by tier and billing dimension
- NFSv3 lacks authentication and encryption
- Storage uses provisioned capacity
Who it suits
It suits applications and infrastructure teams needing shared NFS storage across Google Cloud, on-premises systems, or Cloud Run. GKE users can share storage among pods through the CSI driver.
Verdict
Filestore provides shared, managed NFS storage with integrations across Google Cloud and connected environments. Its protection and protocol features vary by tier, and usage is paid after the trial credit.
