What Asynq is

Asynq is a free, MIT-licensed Go library for placing tasks in Redis-backed queues and processing them asynchronously with workers. It supports at-least-once delivery, retries after failures and recovery after a worker crash. Tasks can run on schedules or periodically. Queue controls include weighted or strict priorities, pausing, deduplication, per-task timeouts and deadlines. Multiple worker servers and brokers can be used for high availability and horizontal scaling. For operations, the project lists Prometheus metrics integration, a web interface and a command-line tool for inspecting and remotely controlling queues and tasks. The companion Asynqmon tool runs as a binary or can be imported as a library, with Prometheus time-series support. Asynq supports Redis Sentinel, although some Lua scripts may not work with Redis Cluster. The quickstart requires Redis 4.0 or higher. Its current major version is 0.x, so the public API may change before 1.0.0.

Good

  • Free MIT-licensed Go library
  • Supports retries and crash recovery
  • Offers scheduled and periodic tasks
  • Includes queue priorities and deduplication
  • Provides Prometheus, web UI and CLI monitoring

Watch out

  • Requires Redis 4.0 or higher
  • Some Lua scripts may not suit Redis Cluster
  • Public API may change before version 1.0.0
  • No published security policy file

Who it suits

Asynq suits Go developers building self-hosted, Redis-backed background processing. It is aimed at teams needing scheduled work, retries, queue controls and worker scaling.

Verdict

Asynq provides broad queueing, scheduling and worker-management controls without a license fee. Teams must operate Redis themselves and account for its 0.x API status and Redis Cluster caveat.
