Xiaomi entered the Indian market primarily as a smartphone manufacturer but has since expanded its presence significantly, particularly in the smartphone and smart TV sectors. The company has ventured into various other areas, including smart devices, and one notable product in this category is the smart air purifier. Xiaomi revolutionized the market by introducing affordable options in this product line, and they have recently unveiled their latest offering, the Smart Air Purifier 4.

Priced at INR 14,999, this new model claims to provide clean and breathable air at a reasonable cost, setting it apart from competitors. We have been the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 for two weeks now and here’s our full review.

Design

The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 maintains the familiar vertical rectangular cuboid design with sleek curved corners, reminiscent of its predecessor, the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 3. The overall design remains minimalist, featuring a matte white finish that complements various room decors. However, it should be noted that the surface tends to attract dust marks easily.

At the top of the purifier, there is a fan protected by a grille, ensuring efficient airflow without any obstructions. Given the purifier’s height, which extends a little over 2 feet in length, the grille is securely lined to serve as a safety measure, preventing children from inserting their fingers and potentially getting injured. Additionally, there is a switch situated within the center of the grille mount, adorned with the Xiaomi logo, which can be flipped to open the grille for convenient fan cleaning.

On the front of the purifier, there is a circular OLED panel with touch capabilities. Users can switch between different modes by utilizing the touch buttons, with one button serving as the power on/off switch for the Air Purifier, while the other button allows for cycling through the available modes. The display provides real-time information on the air quality index (AQI) levels in the room, accompanied by a smaller row displaying the ambient temperature, humidity level, and the currently selected mode. Furthermore, an LED light bar is positioned beneath the display, changing colors (red, orange, or green) to reflect the current air quality status (bad, average, or good).

The purifier’s sides are equipped with a perforated grille that offers ample space for capturing airborne particles. The laser sensor used for detecting these particulate matter (PM) particles is located at the back, alongside a hard reset button. By opening the rear panel, users can access the filter module, which consists of a new True HEPA filter with antibacterial and antiviral coatings, an activated carbon filter, and a negative air ionizer. Working together harmoniously, these components effectively reduce odors and ensure the air inside the house smells fresh.

Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 review: How is its Performance

The latest addition to Xiaomi’s lineup, the Air Purifier 4, offers seamless integration with the company’s Mi Home app, as well as compatibility with Google and Amazon smart ecosystems. Setting up the Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 is a breeze. Users simply need to install the Xiaomi Home app, available on both Android and iOS platforms, and follow the on-screen instructions to add the device to their system. This straightforward process can be completed in under 10 minutes.

In addition to the touch controls on the LED display, users can utilize the Xiaomi Home app to manage and control the smart air purifier. The app unlocks a range of features, such as toggling the ionizer, adjusting the fan speed, monitoring real-time statistics and parameters, and more. Furthermore, users have the option to operate the purifier using voice commands through Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.

When it comes to performance, the Air Purifier 4 comes equipped with a true HEPA filter that incorporates a carbon filter. This HEPA filter has remarkable efficiency, capable of eliminating 99.7% of smoke, dust, spores, and fine particles. In areas like Delhi NCR, notorious for their poor air quality index (AQI) levels, the purifier takes approximately 30 minutes to bring the AQI below the 30 PM2.5 mark. Alongside the HEPA filter, the Air Purifier 4 boasts a new fan design that operates more quietly compared to previous models. Xiaomi claims a clean air delivery rate of approximately 400 cubic meters per hour, which is an improvement from the 380 cubic meters per hour rating of the previous model. This upgrade also expands the overall coverage area, now reaching up to 516 square feet.

To assess the purifier’s performance, with ambient PM2.5 levels around 250, we set the Mi Air Purifier to automatic mode. It successfully lowered the PM2.5 levels to just below 100 in 15 odd minutes, operating the fan at its maximum speed, and resulting in noticeable noise. Once the initial air purification was complete, the fan speed decreased, and it took an additional 10 minutes to bring the PM2.5 levels down to below 20. Individual filters are rated to last between three and six months. As for the filter, based on our experience of using a number of purifiers now, in a city like Delhi with high levels of air pollution, it is advisable to replace the filter approximately every four months.

The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 presents itself as a valuable investment for individuals grappling with poor indoor air quality, a concern that extends beyond Tier 1 cities. This latest model incorporates several noteworthy enhancements, such as an upgraded filter, a quieter motor, and a reliable app integration. In addition to effectively filtering out dust particles, it also tackles pollen, making it beneficial for individuals with respiratory allergies.

In summary, the Air Purifier 4 stays true to Xiaomi’s philosophy and represents a significant advancement in making this product category accessible to a wider audience, further democratizing the field of air purification.

Note: The Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 uses a new filter that is not yet available on the official website. However, there is a possibility that the filter of the old Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 3 which is still available on the store may also be compatible with the Smart Air Purifier 4.
