Overview

QGIS brings map production, spatial analysis, and publishing into one package. It supports many data formats and sources, and can use and create web services built on industry standards. That range makes it useful across varied geospatial projects, while the open-source license gives organizations room to use and adapt it without a subscription.

The project dates to 2002 and is licensed under GNU GPL version 2 or later. QGIS describes its desktop and server software as designed to limit SQL injections and other known security vectors; QGIS Server has also been hardened against SQL injections. The optional news feed records the request date, software version, country, and operating-system platform, while discarding IP addresses and storing or sharing no persistent or personally identifiable information.

Key features

Cartography and reporting

The layout designer supports print map production, while reporting tools can assemble atlases and reports containing maps and tabular content. This is a useful combination for teams that need both finished maps and structured reporting from their spatial work.

Analysis and workflows

QGIS includes hundreds of analysis tools and lets users combine them visually into reproducible workflows. That supports repeatable, complex analysis, though users still need the GIS knowledge to choose and configure the right operations.

Extensions and publishing

The community has developed more than 2,000 plugins, giving users many ways to add capabilities. Submissions receive manual review, but not advanced code-quality assessment; organizations working with sensitive data should audit plugins before relying on them.

QGIS Server publishes projects and layers as OGC-compatible WMS, WMTS, WFS, and WCS services. For fieldwork on touch devices, the project points to third-party apps including QField, Mergin Maps, and IntraMaps Roam; mobile apps are not part of QGIS itself.

Pricing

QGIS — 0.00 USD per free. The plan is free and open-source software under GNU GPLv2+. There is no free trial because there is no paid plan to trial. Its zero software price makes it a compelling option for individuals and organizations, but users may need to account separately for deployment, support, or third-party mobile tools.

The download page offers a Long Term Release build for users who prefer stability over the newest features. Community support is available through the Discourse forum, GIS StackExchange, chat channels, and local user groups.

Platforms

QGIS is available for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, self-hosted deployment, and Windows. The project also identifies third-party mobile field apps, rather than QGIS itself, for touch-optimized field use.

Who it's for

QGIS is a strong choice for GIS practitioners and organizations that need advanced spatial analysis, flexible data-format support, print cartography, or standards-based web publishing without paying a license fee. Its reproducible workflows also suit teams that need to repeat analytical processes.

It is less suitable as a ready-made mobile field app: field use relies on third-party tools. Organizations with strict security requirements should also assess plugins individually, because manual submission review is not an advanced code-quality audit.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free, open-source licensing removes software fees while leaving users broad GIS capabilities.
Pros: Hundreds of analysis tools and visual workflow composition support repeatable spatial work.
Pros: Print layouts, map-and-table reports, and OGC-compatible server publishing span production through delivery.
Cons: Plugin submissions do not receive advanced code-quality assessment, so sensitive deployments need their own audits.
Cons: Mobile fieldwork depends on third-party apps rather than an included QGIS mobile app.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see GIS Software.

GRASS GIS is another free, open-source GIS option for users who want an alternative with Linux, macOS, Windows, web, API, and self-hosted platform support.
GIS Cloud is worth considering when a freemium GIS service and free trial are preferable; it also offers Publisher plugins for QGIS and ArcMap.
SuperMap GIS is a paid alternative with a free trial and support across desktop, mobile, web, API, and self-hosted platforms.
NextGIS Web suits users seeking a freemium web GIS service; its Mini plan costs 180.00 EUR per year, billed annually, for 1 user, 10 GiB storage, unlimited layers, 1 tracker, and 1 collector.
Felt offers a free Personal plan with unlimited maps and sharing, but it does not allow own data file uploads and is for personal use only.
Google Earth Engine is a freemium alternative for users considering usage-based storage and compute charges.
QGIS Cloud is a freemium cloud service provided by Sourcepole AG.
Global Mapper is a paid alternative for users seeking a different GIS option.

Verdict

Choose QGIS if you need a capable, free GIS for analysis, cartography, and standards-based publishing, and are prepared to manage plugins carefully. Look elsewhere if you need an included mobile field app or want a service-centered alternative rather than a broad desktop GIS package.
