Overview

Parents can submit applications for new or existing student enrolments and seek places at multiple institutions. School administrators can review and manage those applications, track admission and enrolment status, and approve or reject each application. This gives schools a way to carry an application from submission through a recorded decision rather than stopping at online intake.

Applications capture student identity, location, address area and birthplace, as well as guardian information. That makes the workflow suitable where these details form part of admissions, but it is not a reason on its own to choose the product for school operations beyond enrolment.

Key features

Application and decision workflow

Parents can apply online, while administrators review applications and manage their status using real-time student data management. The approval and rejection workflow is useful for schools that need to record outcomes alongside enrolment progress. Applicants can seek places at multiple institutions, which supports families considering more than one school.

OpenEMIS connection and deployment

OpenEMIS Registrations directly links to OpenEMIS Core, making Admissions a more natural fit for organisations already using that system. OpenEMIS software can be installed on an organisation’s own IT infrastructure or accessed through dedicated secure hosted workspaces. Self-hosting gives organisations deployment control, but it also means choosing and managing their own infrastructure rather than relying solely on a hosted workspace.

Browser access and support

The online form runs in a web browser on a computer or mobile device with an internet connection. The datasheet names Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Safari as supported browsers. OpenEMIS users also receive a free knowledge base and product documentation. OpenEMIS says it uses industry-standard security protocols, is regularly audited against common web attacks and follows OWASP recommendations.

Pricing

Free open source software: 0.00 USD per free (no licensing fees). The free plan is the product’s stated licensing model, not a time-limited trial. It suits schools or organisations that want to avoid licence fees and can use either their own infrastructure or a dedicated hosted workspace. The no-fee license does not remove the practical need to select a deployment approach; no paid tier or seat-based pricing is part of this offer.

Platforms

OpenEMIS Admissions is web-based and self-hosted, with hybrid hosting also indicated. Families can use the online form from a mobile device or computer with an internet connection. The supported-browser list includes Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

Who it's for

Choose OpenEMIS Admissions if your school needs parent-submitted applications, administrator review and admission decisions, especially if you already use OpenEMIS Core or want an open-source product with a self-hosting option. It is less compelling for organisations seeking a single product whose broader school-management capabilities are established as the main focus; the documented case here is admissions and enrolment.

Pros and cons

Pro: No licensing fees and an open-source model make it a credible option for organisations prioritising software cost and deployment control.
Pro: The workflow covers parent applications, staff review, approval or rejection, and admission and enrolment status, keeping the decision process connected to the initial submission.
Pro: Applications can cover new or existing enrolments and multiple institutions, accommodating more than one type of intake and families applying to several schools.
Con: Direct integration is specified for OpenEMIS Core through OpenEMIS Registrations, so organisations outside that ecosystem have less reason to prefer it on integration grounds.
Con: Self-hosting requires an organisation to use its own IT infrastructure; schools that do not want that deployment responsibility may prefer another arrangement or product.

Verdict

OpenEMIS Admissions is a sound choice for schools that need online applications and a clear staff decision workflow without licensing fees, particularly those already connected to OpenEMIS Core or prepared to manage their own deployment. Look elsewhere if your priority is a wider school-management product rather than an admissions-focused workflow.
