Overview

Northflank is a developer platform for teams that need to build and run applications across multiple services, jobs and databases. It is best suited to developers and platform teams that want deployment workflows and infrastructure choices in one place; the trade-off is that even free-tier users must provide a payment method before creating resources.

Its scope reaches from container builds and orchestration to managed Kubernetes and deployments on infrastructure a team already controls. That breadth makes it more useful for operating an application stack than for teams seeking only a narrow deployment tool.

Key features

Workloads and infrastructure choices

Northflank handles microservices, databases, background jobs and scheduled tasks alongside container builds, networking and orchestration. Teams can use managed Kubernetes across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific without managing clusters, connect AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Oracle or CoreWeave accounts, or import Kubernetes clusters from other providers, including bare-metal and on-premises environments. This flexibility suits teams with mixed infrastructure needs, though it also means the platform covers more operational ground than a simple app host.

Source, automation and operations

Source integrations include GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps and Cursor Origin, as well as self-hosted GitLab, GitHub Enterprise Server, Gitea and Forgejo. Northflank also connects to major container registries, including Docker Hub, GitHub Container Registry, Amazon ECR and Google Artifact Registry, and observability services such as Datadog, New Relic, Splunk and Prometheus. Log ingestion supports syslog and HTTP.

Automation is available through a REST API, UI, CLI, GitOps, reusable templates, pipelines and preview environments. Canary rollouts, deployment rollback, approval gates and deployment audit logs support controlled releases. This is a strong fit for teams that want repeatable delivery workflows, rather than a platform limited to pushing a build.

Security and support

Secrets and files are encrypted at rest with AES-256, and secrets are injected at runtime. Managed-cloud workloads use Kata Containers or gVisor, mutual TLS, network policies and Kubernetes namespace isolation. Northflank supports OAuth through GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Google, TOTP two-factor authentication, and enterprise SAML 2.0 or OpenID Connect SSO. It states that it is SOC 2 Type 2 and HIPAA compliant; ISO 27001/27018 is not available.

Basic email support comes with every plan. Premium support adds dedicated Slack channels, video calls, faster responses and service-level agreements with uptime guarantees, which may matter to teams with demanding operational requirements.

Pricing

Northflank uses a freemium model, with paid usage described as starting at $0/mo. Pay-as-you-go charges only for consumption, prorated to the second, and is aimed at solo developers, personal projects, bootstrapped companies and early-stage startups. It offers 6+ cloud regions, 600 BYOC regions, infinite scalability, and CPU and GPU options. The listed compute containers are priced per container, but their prices are custom pricing: nf-compute-10 has 0.1 shared vCPU and 256 MB memory; nf-compute-50 has 0.5 shared vCPU and 1024 MB; nf-compute-100-2 has 1 dedicated vCPU and 2048 MB. Without a stated container price, teams should compare expected consumption before committing to a workload.

Sandbox costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 2 free services, 1 free database and 2 free cron jobs, with always-on compute. Those caps make it suitable for small experiments or personal projects, but constrain teams running several services or databases. A payment method is required before creating resources even on this plan, for identity verification and abuse prevention.

Enterprise uses custom pricing, invoice billing and an annual commitment. It includes SSO/SAML/OIDC, audit logs, global backups and HA/DR, secure runtime and on-premises deployments, and support for 50k+ developers per tenant. It is positioned for high-growth startups, large enterprises, regulated industries and high-demand applications; the commitment and custom price make it a poor fit for a small project looking for a no-obligation tier.

Platforms

Northflank supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows. Its deployment targets include Northflank managed cloud, AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Civo, Oracle, CoreWeave and Neb. The combination of managed and self-hosted options is useful for teams balancing convenience with infrastructure control.

Who it's for

Northflank suits developers and platform teams that need to deploy several kinds of workloads, automate releases and choose between managed Kubernetes, cloud accounts or imported clusters. Pay-as-you-go is aimed at solo developers through early-stage startups; Enterprise targets larger, regulated or high-demand environments. It is less compelling for anyone unwilling to add a payment method to start a free project, or for teams seeking a tightly limited single-purpose deploy service.

Pros and cons

Pros: Combines application workloads, container operations and managed Kubernetes in one platform, reducing the need to stitch together separate deployment steps.
Pros: Supports managed cloud, major cloud accounts and imported clusters, including bare-metal and on-premises environments, giving teams meaningful infrastructure choice.
Pros: GitOps, pipelines, preview environments, canary rollouts, approvals and rollback support structured release workflows.
Cons: The Sandbox caps free resources at 2 services, 1 database and 2 cron jobs, limiting larger experiments.
Cons: A payment method is required even to create free resources, a meaningful barrier for cautious users.
Cons: Compute and Pay-as-you-go prices are custom pricing, so cost planning requires more than the $0/mo starting figure.

Alternatives

For a different approach to developer platforms and adjacent workflows, consider Backstage, which is free and open source; configure8, which offers a free tier and free trial; Cycloid, with a free plan for up to 5 users and one workspace; or Port, whose free tier is capped at 15 seats, 10k entities and 400 runs. Atlassian Compass is worth considering if its free allowance of 3 full users and unlimited basic users fits the team, while Skyhook and Wayfinder are other freemium options.

Qovery is a paid alternative without a free plan; its Team plan is 299.00 USD per month billed yearly and includes 3 users, 1 managed cluster and 3,000 deployment minutes per month. Browse DevOps Platforms, Deployment Automation Software, Platform Engineering Software, Internal Developer Portals, Progressive Delivery Software or Sandbox Software to compare categories.

Verdict

Choose Northflank if your team wants one platform for application workloads, release automation and a choice of managed or existing infrastructure. Its breadth and deployment controls are the central advantages; the free tier's small quotas, required payment method and custom pricing for usage-based plans are the main reasons to look elsewhere.
