Overview

Night Sky is a personal planetarium that identifies stars, planets, satellites and constellations when you point a device at the sky. It is best suited to curious skywatchers who want local observing information alongside object identification, with optional tools for deeper exploration and shared viewing. Basic makes a useful starting point; the subscriptions add substantial catalogue, AR and guide features.

Key features

Find objects and plan a session

Night Sky’s sky view identifies celestial objects in context, while Night Sky Tonight provides local conditions, planet rise times and upcoming celestial events. Together, those features make it more than a recognition tool: users can check what may be worth looking for before they head outside. Offline access is supported, although the specific offline features are not defined.

Explore, learn and share

Night Sky + unlocks Deep Sky Zoom, a catalogue of 1.7 billion stars, as well as Connected Stargazing, tours, the AR Grand Orrery and AR Planetary Portals. These are meaningful additions for users who want to browse beyond familiar constellations or share a sky-viewing session over FaceTime with SharePlay. Some AR features require LiDAR, so the full experience depends on device hardware.

Night Sky + Aura adds an in-app AI astronomer. Aura tours and spoken questions and answers suit users who prefer a guided, conversational introduction to the sky; users who do not need that format can choose Night Sky + instead. Sky Tags let users save objects with observation notes and photos. Basic allows two tags, while subscriptions provide unlimited tags, a consequential limit for anyone building a longer-term observing log.

Accessibility features include VoiceOver support, magnified sky labels and audio navigation. The app also lists mission tracking and learning content, extending its use beyond simply identifying what is overhead.

Pricing

Night Sky uses a freemium model. Basic costs 0.00 USD per free and includes celestial-object identification, local stargazing information and two personal Sky Tags. It is the sensible choice for casual observers who mainly want to identify objects and check local conditions, but the tag cap and absence of subscription features make it less suitable for maintaining an extensive log or exploring the full catalogue and AR tools.

Night Sky + has custom pricing. Weekly, monthly and annual subscriptions are available, with prices varying by country. It includes everything in Night Sky +, plus 1.7 billion stars, Connected Stargazing and tours, and the AR Grand Orrery and Planetary Portals. Choose it for the expanded catalogue, shared sessions and AR exploration; some AR features require LiDAR.

Night Sky + Aura also has custom pricing, with weekly, monthly and annual subscriptions available and prices varying by country. It includes everything in Night Sky +, along with Aura tours and spoken questions and answers. It fits users who specifically want guided, voice-based interaction, while Night Sky + covers the main catalogue and exploration upgrades without those Aura additions. Both subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the current period ends; they are managed through App Store account settings.

Platforms

Night Sky is available on Android, iOS and macOS, and is described as cross-platform. Its AR sky view and offline access broaden how it can be used, though some AR features depend on LiDAR. Connected Stargazing works over FaceTime with SharePlay.

Who it's for

Night Sky is a good fit for skywatchers who want identification and location-based observing information in one app, especially those who value accessibility options or want to record observations. The free plan should cover occasional identification and planning. Regular observers who want unlimited Sky Tags, a very large star catalogue, shared sessions or AR features will have stronger reasons to subscribe; users seeking spoken AI guidance can step up to Night Sky + Aura.

Privacy-conscious users should note that no account is required and the maker says it does not directly collect personal data through the app or retain personal data from app use. Aura queries and optional location data may be sent to OpenAI. The maker says it does not sell or rent personal information.

Con: Subscription prices vary by country, and automatic renewal requires cancellation at least 24 hours before the period ends.
Con: Some AR features require LiDAR, and Aura queries and optional location data may be sent to OpenAI.
