Overview

Unity Version Control is an engine-agnostic source-control system for game teams managing code alongside large assets and binaries. It is best suited to projects where programmers and artists need different ways to work in the same repository. Its workflow and hosting flexibility are compelling, but cloud quotas and the monthly on-prem seat price are important constraints.

Key features

Developers can choose centralized or distributed work, with branching and merging; artists can use file-based workflows. Native large-file handling, file locking, and sparse checkout suit asset-heavy repositories, though the value of the cloud tier depends on whether its storage and transfer allowances cover a team’s workload. Smart Locks verify that a user has the latest version before permitting a file lock, helping prevent conflicts caused by locking an outdated copy.

Teams can use Unity-hosted servers or deploy the server on their own infrastructure. Unity names JIRA, Rider, TeamCity, Jenkins, Bamboo, Unreal Engine, and Discord among its integrations and supported tools. Access control lists and permissions can be applied at repository, branch, and individual-item level. Uploads and downloads use SSL, and Unity says it permits only SSL connections. Support includes an email response in less than 24 hours, remote help for complex problems, and priority for development-team code hotfixes.

Pricing

The Free tier costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited cloud seats, 25 GB of storage per organization per month, and 100 GB of egress per month. That removes per-seat charges for hosted teams, but storage is shared across the organization and the egress cap can matter for asset-heavy projects. Usage beyond included limits is pay-as-you-go.

Pay-as-you-go has no listed price and retains 25 GB of free storage and 100 GB of free monthly egress per organization; it is for teams willing to pay for usage beyond those allowances. The hosted-cloud plan is also 0.00 USD per free, with 25 GB included storage per organization per month and unlimited hosted cloud seats.

Unity Version Control on-prem seats cost 38.00 USD per month, billed at $38 per seat. This makes self-hosting possible, but unlike hosted cloud it brings a recurring per-seat cost. Unity also offers a free trial of DevOps services to users without DevOps setup when they enable Version Control through Unity Hub; no trial duration is stated. A user counts as active in a month after writing to a repository or uploading or downloading 5 MB of data.

Platforms

Desktop clients are available for Windows, macOS on Apple Silicon or Intel, and Linux. The platform range also includes web, API, and self-hosted support.

Who it's for

Unity Version Control makes most sense for game-development teams sharing large repositories across developers and artists, especially when file locking and flexible hosting matter. Teams with modest cloud needs can start without per-seat cloud charges. Those expecting to exceed the shared storage or egress allowances should weigh pay-as-you-go usage; organizations that need on-prem deployment should budget per seat.

Pros and cons

Pro: Centralized and distributed developer workflows coexist with file-based artist workflows, accommodating mixed teams.
Pro: Native large-file handling, sparse checkout, and Smart Locks address practical needs of asset-heavy projects.
Pro: Hosted cloud has unlimited seats, while self-hosted deployment gives teams a hosting choice.
Con: Hosted storage and egress are capped at 25 GB and 100 GB per organization per month on the free allowance.
Con: On-prem seats cost $38 per seat per month, a meaningful ongoing cost as teams grow.

Alternatives

For other tools, browse Version Control Software or Game Version Control Software. Diversion is another freemium option with a free tier and free trial; its Education plan is free for up to 10 eligible users at academic institutions. Fossil is a free, self-hosted option under a 2-clause BSD license. Apache Subversion is free and open source, with third parties maintaining binary packages. GitButler offers a free, open-source client for standalone use, with an optional $5.00 USD per month Supporter plan. Mercurial is free software under GNU GPL version 2 or later. Gitember is free and open source, with all features included and no account required; Gitnuro is free for personal and commercial use without limitations. Accessibility Test Framework for Android is also listed as a free alternative.

Verdict

Choose Unity Version Control if a game team needs large-file support, artist-friendly workflows, and a choice between hosted and self-hosted infrastructure. Unlimited hosted seats make the free cloud tier attractive to teams that fit within its organization-wide quotas. Look elsewhere if those storage and egress limits are too restrictive or if $38 per on-prem seat each month is outside the budget.
