Overview

Automatic uploads cover all devices, and file-version restoration gives you a way back to an earlier copy when a file changes. Files keep their original quality, while AI photo search can find images in a timeline from descriptions. These features make Jottacloud more than a place to store files, though the free plan’s 5 GB is a small starting allowance for backing up multiple devices.

Data is stored in Norway under Norwegian and European privacy laws, and the data center and business operations run on renewable hydropower. Business data sent to or from Jottacloud uses 256-bit AES encryption. The service does not offer zero-knowledge encryption, so it is not the right fit if you require a provider that cannot access stored data. Jotta Group AS is based in Oslo and has provided cloud storage since 2008; Jottacloud says it has 1.9 million users.

Key features

Automatic backup and version restoration: Files upload automatically, and older versions can be restored. That is useful for recovering changed files, although the plan details do not establish how long versions are retained.
Original-quality storage and AI photo search: Uploaded files are not compressed, and photo search can locate images from a timeline using descriptions. This suits people with growing photo libraries who want to find images without sacrificing original quality.
Office collaboration: Direct integration with Microsoft Office Online supports collaborative editing, which is useful for teams already working in Office.
Business sharing and administration: Business plans include admin controls and allow sharing files of any size. They accommodate two to unlimited users, making Jottacloud relevant to organizations that need managed shared storage.
Upload-speed condition: Unlimited storage has upload speed gradually reduced after 5 TB. That makes it less compelling for users who regularly upload very large volumes and need consistently unrestricted speed.

Pricing

Jottacloud uses a freemium model, with a free trial also offered. Annual-billed plans show a monthly equivalent as well as the annual charge; the annual total is the amount to compare when budgeting.

Plan	Price and allowance	Best fit
5 GB Free	0.00 USD per free; 5 GB, one user	A single user who wants to try automatic backup, but 5 GB is restrictive for a full-device collection.
Home 1 TB	7.99 USD per month, billed annually at USD 79.90/year; 1 TB, five users, no bandwidth limitation	Households sharing storage. It offers five seats and avoids the Unlimited plan’s stated 5 TB speed condition, but caps storage at 1 TB.
Unlimited	12.99 USD per month, billed annually at USD 129.90/year; unlimited storage, one user; upload speed gradually reduced after 5 TB	One user who prioritizes capacity over a fixed quota. The 5 TB speed reduction matters for sustained heavy uploads.
Home 5 TB	Custom pricing; 5 TB, five users	Households that need more space than Home 1 TB; its price must be weighed against the known 1 TB option.
Pro 10 TB	29.90 USD per month, billed annually at USD 299/year; 10 TB, one user, maximum speed, licensed for commercial use	A commercial user who needs a large quota and maximum speed.
Pro 20 TB and Pro 30 TB	Custom pricing; 20 TB or 30 TB, one user per plan	Single users with larger storage needs who can request custom pricing.

The lower-cost paid Home plan trades capacity for five-user sharing, while Unlimited gives one user much more room but has a speed condition after 5 TB. Pro 10 TB is specifically licensed for commercial use; the larger Pro tiers also provide one user, with custom pricing.

Platforms

Jottacloud supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. That spread makes it practical for households or individuals using a mix of desktop and mobile devices.

Who it's for

Choose Jottacloud if you want automatic backup across devices, the option to restore old file versions, or shared household storage. Businesses can benefit from administrative controls, Office Online collaboration, and sharing files of any size. Look elsewhere if zero-knowledge encryption is essential, or if your uploads are likely to exceed 5 TB and you need the Unlimited plan to maintain its initial upload speed.

Pros and cons

Pros: Backup covers all devices across five major platforms, and older file versions can be restored.
Pros: Home 1 TB provides five users and no bandwidth limitation for 7.99 USD per month, billed annually at USD 79.90/year.
Pros: Business plans add administration controls, Office Online collaboration, and file sharing without a size limit.
Pros: Norwegian storage, privacy-law coverage, and hydropower-based renewable operations will matter to readers weighing data location and energy use.
Cons: The free plan’s 5 GB is limited for backing up multiple devices.
Cons: Unlimited is for one user and gradually reduces upload speed after 5 TB.
Cons: No zero-knowledge encryption means it does not meet that privacy requirement.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Cloud Storage Services, Cloud Backup Services, and Backup software.

Consider IDrive if its 10 GB Basic tier or 100 GB Mini plan at 0.25 USD per month better matches your starting storage needs. Choose Koofr if its 10 GB free plan and public-link features suit your sharing needs. Microsoft PowerPoint is an alternative for readers focused on presentation software rather than device backup. PhoneCopy is an alternative for readers focused on syncing contacts, calendars, tasks, and notes. Choose Filen if open-source apps released under the AGPL v3 are a priority. Consider Internxt Drive if publicly available code and an external audit matter to your choice. Google Drive is an alternative with 15 GB of no-cost storage included with a Google Account. Consider pCloud if its 10 GB free plan is a better fit.

Verdict

Jottacloud is a strong choice for individuals and households who want automatic backup, version recovery, and a mix of desktop and mobile support, with useful collaboration and controls for businesses. The Home 1 TB plan is the clearest household option, while Unlimited suits one user willing to accept the upload-speed reduction after 5 TB. Choose another service if zero-knowledge encryption is essential or if that speed condition conflicts with your upload workload.
