Overview

Omnis brings a visual development environment, Method Editor, integrated debugging and an application server together. Developers can mix visual work with code-level control, while the shared codebase can serve desktop, web and mobile applications. That combination is useful when one team needs to cover several targets without maintaining separate application projects.

Cloud and on-premise deployment give teams a choice about where applications run. The trade-off is that Omnis is a full development and deployment environment, not simply a focused code editor; its professional licensing and subscription terms are central to whether it fits a project.

Key features

Development and connectivity

Native connectors cover Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL and SAP HANA, alongside ODBC, JDBC, REST, SOAP, JSON and XML connectivity. This range makes Omnis a strong candidate for projects spanning established databases and web-facing services. The CommunityPro plan narrows data access to a choice of MS Express, PostgreSQL or SQLite module, so teams needing other options should account for the higher-tier licensing.

The integrated debugging tools and application server keep key development and runtime capabilities within the same environment. Omnis also supports pro-code development, workflow automation and mobile apps, though the breadth is most valuable to teams building and maintaining applications across multiple platforms.

Pricing

The Community Edition costs 0.00 USD per free for the lifetime of the app. It supports web and mobile apps and includes email technical support from Omnis engineers for Omnis Studio issues. Deployment is capped at five concurrent users, making it best for hobby projects, small user groups and non-commercial work rather than a growing production service. Support does not cover questions about databases, browsers, APIs, devices or hardware.

CommunityPro Edition costs 62.50 USD per month, billed annually; the page states annual billing saves 20%, and VAT applies. It includes web and mobile development, a choice of MS Express, PostgreSQL or SQLite data access module, email technical support and maintenance. This is the lower-cost paid step for developers who can work within those database-module choices, but it does not include the desktop development scope stated for Professional Edition.

Professional Edition has custom pricing: its annual-billing price starts at 295.00 AUD per month. It supports unlimited apps, web, mobile and desktop development, and unlimited chargeable users, positioning it for professional developers and teams with broader deployment needs. The Professional Edition trial lasts up to 90 days and includes all features. Developer subscriptions can be paid monthly or annually and terminated with 30 days’ notice, but termination stops the developer license and ends access to view or edit projects, updates, bug fixes and technical support. That consequence makes continued access a material consideration, not just a billing detail.

Platforms

Omnis supports Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and browsers. This reach suits teams targeting desktop and mobile users as well as web access from one codebase. Cloud or on-premise deployment provides flexibility over hosting, while the platform range alone does not remove the need to choose a plan that covers the required app types and user scale.

Who it's for

Omnis Studio fits professional developers and teams that value a combined visual and code-based environment, broad data connectivity, and one-codebase development across desktop, web and mobile. The free edition is better matched to hobby developers, first projects and small non-commercial groups that can stay within five concurrent users. It is not the right free option for a commercial deployment that needs a larger user base.

Pros and cons

Pros: One codebase targets desktop, web and mobile, reducing the need to split work across separate platform-specific projects.
Pros: Native database connectors plus ODBC, JDBC, REST, SOAP, JSON and XML support accommodate a wide range of data sources and services.
Pros: The free edition includes email support for Omnis Studio issues, and Professional Edition can be evaluated with all features for up to 90 days.
Cons: Community Edition deployment stops at five concurrent users, limiting its usefulness for larger or commercial deployments.
Cons: Community Edition support excludes issues involving databases, browsers, APIs, devices and hardware, which can leave important integration questions outside its scope.
Cons: Ending a developer subscription also ends project viewing and editing access, as well as updates, bug fixes and technical support.

Alternatives

Qt Creator is another freemium option with a free open-source edition, a trial and support across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows; choose it when that option better suits your framework and licensing needs. Eric is a free IDE for Linux, macOS and Windows. KDevelop is a free IDE for Linux, macOS and Windows, with no paid tiers stated. Apache NetBeans is free for commercial and non-commercial use under Apache License 2.0 and supports Linux, macOS and Windows. BlueJ is a free Java development environment designed for beginners. CLion offers a free non-commercial option for individual learning, self-education and open-source contributions without commercial use. Eclipse IDE is free and open source under Eclipse Public License 2.0, with packages for multiple programming areas. IntelliJ IDEA has free core functionality for Java and Kotlin alongside a paid Ultimate subscription.

Verdict

Choose Omnis Studio if your team needs desktop, web and mobile development from one codebase, backed by a wide range of database and service connections. The free edition offers a practical starting point for small non-commercial work, while Professional Edition serves larger, broader projects. Look elsewhere if a five-user cap is too restrictive or if your team cannot accept losing project access when its subscription ends.
