Overview

MessageDesk brings business texting across teams and phone lines into a shared inbox, with tools for coordinating replies and automating routine work. It suits operations and service teams that need several people to manage customer conversations; its strongest case is shared handling of SMS and MMS, while phone-number and security constraints narrow where it fits.

It is not a free-to-use product despite its freemium pricing model: there is no free plan, and the 14-day trial requires a credit card. Paid plans start at $29/user/mo on annual billing, with Team requiring at least three users.

Key features

Shared inbox and team coordination

Teams can route, assign and label conversations, add internal comments, mention colleagues and schedule texts. That makes MessageDesk more useful for conversations that move between teammates than a personal texting tool. The mobile apps handle inbox access, messaging and contact management, but Relays, comments and mentions, and full settings access are desktop-only; teams relying on mobile for those workflows will hit a real limitation.

SMS, MMS and automation

MessageDesk supports two-way SMS and MMS, including individual and group texting; group texts support up to seven contacts. Relays can send out-of-office replies, respond to keywords, identify contacts, assign teammates and apply labels. These automations suit repetitive intake and routing, though Relays are a Pro feature.

Integrations, numbers and security

Integrations include Twilio, Zapier and webhooks, plus VoIP services such as RingCentral, Ooma, Zoom Phone and Microsoft Teams Phone. Sending works with 10-digit US and Canada numbers, including existing landline and VoIP numbers, but not cell phone numbers. Businesses needing to text from a mobile number should look elsewhere.

MessageDesk guides businesses through A2P 10DLC registration, included with Team. It states that it is AICPA SOC 2 Type II certified and provides security documentation through its Trust Center. However, SMS is not end-to-end encrypted, MessageDesk is not for protected health information, and it does not currently sign BAAs.

Pricing

Every listed paid plan is billed per user and has an annual contract, including the monthly-billed options. Team and Pro monthly billing therefore changes payment cadence, not the contract term.

Team (yearly): $29.00 USD per year, billed per user per month with the annual contract billed annually. The minimum is three users; the plan includes up to 48 phone numbers, unlimited one-to-one SMS and carrier registration. It is the entry point for small teams that need shared texting and registration, but the three-seat floor makes it a poor fit for a solo user.
Team (monthly): $39.00 USD per month, billed per user per month with the annual contract billed monthly. It has the same three-user minimum and core inclusions as yearly Team, for a higher per-user rate in exchange for monthly billing.
Pro (yearly): $79.00 USD per year, billed per user per month with the annual contract billed annually; minimum one user. It adds unlimited broadcasts to 100 people, custom roles and permissions, multi-line opt-out management, Relays and Zapier. Choose it when automation or larger broadcasts justify a substantial step up from Team.
Pro (monthly): $99.00 USD per month, billed per user per month with the annual contract billed monthly; minimum one user. It includes the same Pro features, at a higher per-user rate than yearly billing.
Enterprise: custom pricing, billed per user per month under an annual contract. It adds priority support, multiple inboxes and workspaces, custom SSO, custom integrations and analytics dashboards. This is aimed at organizations needing those controls and support rather than a published-price team plan.

Team and Pro include documentation and email support; Enterprise adds enhanced support and priority support. The 14-day trial requires a credit card to start, so it is not a no-commitment free tier.

Platforms

MessageDesk is available on Android, iOS and the web. The mobile apps cover inbox work, messaging and contacts, but desktop is required for Relays, comments and mentions, and full settings.

Who it's for

MessageDesk is aimed at HR, staffing, dispatch, operations, professional-services and home-services teams. It is a sensible fit when staff need to share business conversations across lines and assign follow-up. It is not suitable for protected health information, and the lack of cell-number support rules it out for teams that must send from cell phone numbers.

Pros and cons

Pro: Routing, assignment, labels, comments and mentions give teams concrete ways to hand off and track shared conversations.
Pro: SMS and MMS, scheduled messages and Relays combine customer texting with routine response and routing automation.
Pro: Team includes carrier registration and supports up to 48 phone numbers, useful for businesses managing several lines.
Con: There is no free plan, the trial needs a credit card, and Team requires three users under an annual contract.
Con: Cell phone numbers are unsupported, and the mobile apps omit several collaboration and automation tools.
Con: SMS is not end-to-end encrypted and MessageDesk will not sign a BAA, excluding protected health information workflows.

Alternatives

Sociocs is worth considering for a free starting point: its free plan includes two channels, one user, 1,000 messages per month and unlimited templates.
Heymarket is another paid option with a trial; its Standard plan specifies two-way messaging, a shared inbox, unlimited contacts and templates, with a two-user minimum.
Textmagic is a paid alternative with a trial and an Essential plan billed prepaid at $0.05 USD per month, with rates varying by destination and 160 plain-text characters per SMS part.

Sinch Engage is a paid alternative with a trial and plans that specify monthly SMS quotas and user counts.

Verdict

Choose MessageDesk if a multi-person service or operations team needs a shared SMS/MMS inbox, phone-line coordination and automations, and can use supported US or Canada landline or VoIP numbers. Its strongest reason to buy is the combination of team handoffs and configurable Relays; its clearest reasons to look elsewhere are the three-user Team minimum, desktop-only collaboration features on mobile, and the firm limits around cell numbers and protected health information.
