Overview

GNUKhata brings invoicing, bookkeeping, stock management, and financial reporting into one product, with support for multiple entities and an audit trail. That combination can serve organizations managing more than one entity or needing traceable records without paying for a software license. It does not support multi-currency, which rules it out for businesses that need foreign-currency accounting.

GNUKhata began in India in 2009 with a focus on Indian GST requirements. Its roles include Admin, Manager, Operator, Internal Auditor, and Godown In charge, allowing organizations to assign different operational responsibilities.

Key features

Sales and accounting

Sales and purchase invoices, point-of-sale entries, delivery notes, debit and credit notes, payments, and receipts cover a substantial portion of routine transaction work. The customizable chart of accounts, journal and contra vouchers, and year-end book closing and rollover provide a conventional accounting structure. For small organizations that need transactions and books together, this breadth is more useful than a tool limited to ledger entries.

Inventory and reports

GNUKhata tracks stock across multiple godowns and supports product and service records, tax details, and HSN search. This makes it a practical fit for traders managing stock at more than one location. Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and stock summaries connect operational activity with financial reporting.

GST reporting and limits

The software generates GSTR-1 reports that can be exported as JSON for upload to the GST portal. That supports a defined part of a GST workflow, but the product does not support online e-way billing, e-invoicing, or GST-2A/GSTR-2B reconciliation, among other advanced GST functions. Organizations that depend on those workflows should choose a more complete GST solution.

Security and deployment

The project says SQL injection issues have been fixed, but the code has not had a security audit and the project recommends private-environment use. That is a material caution for organizations weighing deployment, particularly if they need audited software. GNUKhata v8.0 is distributed as Docker images; Windows installation is possible, but is not well tested, so Windows users should be prepared for uncertainty around installation.

Pricing

GNUKhata is free and open source. The GNUKhata plan costs 0.00 USD per free and supports the current v8.0 Docker installation. There are no paid tiers or seat charges in the stated plan, making it an option for organizations seeking accounting and inventory software without a software fee.

Platforms

GNUKhata supports Linux, web, self-hosted, and Windows use. The Docker distribution is the clearest stated route for v8.0; Windows installation is possible but not well tested. Organizations choosing self-hosting should weigh the private-environment recommendation alongside their own security needs.

Who it's for

GNUKhata is a strong fit for Indian SMEs, traders, startups, and NGOs that need accounting, inventory tracking, and GSTR-1 reporting in a free package. It is less suitable for businesses requiring multi-currency accounting, advanced GST workflows, or security assurance from an audited codebase. Users seeking help can turn to the project's Telegram, Matrix, and mailing-list channels.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free, open-source access combines accounting, sales, purchases, and inventory without a software charge.
Pros: Multi-godown stock tracking and product, service, tax, and HSN records serve traders with varied inventory needs.
Pros: GSTR-1 JSON export supports a direct reporting step for Indian GST users.
Pros: Multiple entities, an audit trail, and distinct user roles help organize work across entities and responsibilities.
Cons: No multi-currency support makes it a poor match for foreign-currency books.
Cons: Missing e-way billing, e-invoicing, and GST reconciliation leave important workflows uncovered for some GST-led businesses.
Cons: The unaudited code and private-environment recommendation warrant caution for organizations with stricter security requirements.
Cons: Windows installation is not well tested, despite being possible.

Verdict

Choose GNUKhata if you are an Indian SME, trader, startup, or NGO seeking free accounting, stock management, and GSTR-1 reporting in one open-source product. Its strongest reason to buy in is the breadth of business workflows at no software cost; its strongest reason to look elsewhere is the combination of missing advanced GST functions and unaudited code.
