Overview

OpenMW-CS is a construction set for editing mods and creating original games for the OpenMW engine. It suits Morrowind modders and creators building standalone games on OpenMW. Its broad editing scope and zero price are appealing, but its ongoing development and incompatibility with several established Morrowind tools make it a choice best made with compatibility in mind.

The editor covers files, world data, mechanics, characters, and assets, with record filters and a cell view. It supports mod packaging, plugin editing, and script editing, and works with ESM, ESP, .omwgame, and .omwaddon formats. That range makes it more than a narrow plugin utility: creators can use it to build an entirely new game that OpenMW can run.

Original games made with OpenMW-CS do not require Morrowind. Playing Morrowind does: OpenMW does not bundle its content or assets, so users need a legally owned copy. The project began in 2008, and its source code is released under the GNU General Public License version 3.

Key features

Game-data editing: Tools for files, world, mechanics, characters, and assets give modders broad control over game content; record filters and a cell view support working with records and locations.
Mod and plugin creation: Mod packaging and plugin editing, with ESM and ESP support, make it suited to building Morrowind-related content for OpenMW.
Script editing: Script support keeps script work within the editor’s stated scope, though mods dependent on MWSE, MGE XE, or MCP will not work in OpenMW.
Original games: Support for .omwgame and .omwaddon accompanies the ability to create new games, making the tool relevant beyond Morrowind modding.

Pricing

OpenMW-CS is free: its plan costs 0.00 USD per free. The open-source construction set has no paid tier in this offering, so it is an accessible option for hobbyists and creators who want to build for OpenMW without a software purchase. No free trial is offered, but there is no paid plan to trial.

Platforms

OpenMW-CS supports Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux. Official releases are available for all three, with additional distribution through Windows Chocolatey, Linux distribution repositories, and Flathub. OpenMW 0.51.0 is named as the latest release. This range gives desktop users several ways to obtain it, though the project’s development status warrants checking that the release fits a particular setup and mod workflow.

Who it's for

OpenMW-CS is a strong fit for people editing or packaging mods for OpenMW, especially those already familiar with Morrowind modding, and for creators making original games that can run in OpenMW. Its manual is intended as both an introduction and a reference, so it addresses newcomers as well as experienced modders.

It is a weaker fit for players whose mod loadouts depend on MWSE, MGE XE, or MCP. Those tools alter the original Morrowind executable, which makes their dependent mods incompatible with OpenMW. The manual also cautions that the editor is still in development and does not cover all of its shortcomings; users relying on particular capabilities should account for that uncertainty. For help with compatible mods, the project points users to Discord, IRC, or its forums.

Pros and cons

Pros

Free and open source: There is no purchase barrier, and the GPL version 3 release makes the source code available under a recognized open-source license.
Broad editing remit: World, mechanics, character, asset, file, plugin, and script work serve more than one narrow modding task.
Can support original games: Creators can build games that run in OpenMW without requiring players to own Morrowind.
Three desktop platforms: Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux releases cover the main desktop systems named for the editor.

Cons

Still in development: The manual itself warns it does not cover the editor’s shortcomings, making it less reassuring for workflows that require dependable coverage of every tool.
Limited compatibility with legacy mod ecosystems: Mods requiring MWSE, MGE XE, or MCP cannot be used with OpenMW, ruling out some established Morrowind setups.
Morrowind requires a separate legal copy: OpenMW supplies neither the game nor its assets, so modders targeting Morrowind need to own it.

Alternatives

Game Modding Tools is the category directory for comparing other options. Choose StarCraft II Editor instead when the project is specifically for StarCraft II; it is free and supports macOS and Windows. WolvenKit is another free, open-source option for Linux or Windows, with its stated use focused on research and education. Choose DarkRadiant for open-source level editing when its requirement for separate game resources is acceptable. xEdit is a free Windows alternative when Windows-only availability suits the workflow. NetRadiant-Custom offers a free open-source level editor with ready-to-use packages in Releases. J.A.C.K. is worth considering for its Linux, macOS, and Windows support; its Steam version costs 14.99 USD per once and includes access to beta updates. Dota 2 Workshop Tools is a free Windows option. Chunker is a free, open-source MIT-licensed alternative for Linux, macOS, web, and Windows; Hive Games describes it as an internal tool it offers for free.

Verdict

Choose OpenMW-CS if you want a free, open-source editor for building OpenMW mods or original games and can work within its compatibility boundaries. Its range of editing tools and three-platform support are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if your Morrowind setup depends on MWSE, MGE XE, or MCP, or if you need confidence beyond what a project still in development can offer.
