Overview

Frappe HR is open-source software for HR and payroll operations, with tools spanning recruitment, employee management, attendance, leave, expenses, performance, payroll, and income tax. It is best suited to organizations that want broad workflows and the flexibility to self-host or customize; its main trade-off is the work and cost of hosting, implementation, and ongoing support.

Its breadth is a meaningful advantage for teams consolidating HR and payroll processes, particularly those already using ERPNext accounting. Smaller organizations seeking a ready-to-run service with little technical or implementation overhead may be better served elsewhere. Browse HR Software for more options.

Key features

Recruitment and employee lifecycle

Recruitment covers staffing plans, job listings, applicant tracking, interview scheduling, feedback, offers, and analytics. That makes Frappe HR more than a personnel-record system: it can support a hiring process from planning through offers. Employee records and onboarding extend coverage into the employee lifecycle.

Attendance, leave, and performance

Shifts, attendance, time tracking, and leave management bring routine workforce administration into the same platform as performance management. This range can suit organizations looking to connect day-to-day tracking with broader HR processes, though the product's breadth also means implementation choices matter.

Payroll and integrations

Payroll supports configurable salary rules, bulk assignments, payroll runs, off-cycle payments, multiple currencies, employee loans, and timesheet-based payroll. This is a substantial set of payroll workflows for organizations with varied pay arrangements. Integration with ERPNext accounting, plus connections to biometric tools, banks, and third-party software, can help fit HR into a wider operational setup.

Customization, security, and deployment

Built on the Frappe Framework, the product allows custom forms, fields, workflows, reports, and dashboards. That flexibility favors teams able to shape software around their processes, but it can add implementation effort. Frappe HR is AGPL-3.0 licensed and can be self-hosted with installation scripts. Role-based permissions, audit logs, and activity trails support oversight; Frappe Cloud provides regular backups and encrypted communication.

A mobile app provides smartphone access to HR functions, alongside web access and API support. The platform is available for iOS and Android as well as self-hosted deployment, giving organizations options for both access and hosting.

Pricing

Frappe HR's open-source software plan costs 0.00 USD per free under the AGPL-3.0 license. Hosting and implementation cost extra, so the software's free price does not make operating a self-hosted installation cost-free. The pricing page estimates a self-hosted VPS starts around $40/month; email, security, backups, setup, and maintenance add costs.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Frappe Cloud Sites	5.00 USD per month	1 site
Frappe Cloud Servers	20.00 USD per month	Multiple sites and benches
Frappe Cloud Servers - Dedicated	125.00 USD per month	Multiple sites and benches
Frappe Cloud Sites hosting	5.00 USD per month	Single site, shared servers, multiple apps
Frappe Cloud Servers hosting	125.00 USD per month	Dedicated server isolation, snapshots and autoscaling, global data centre locations

The $5 site options suit a single site, while the $20 server plan accommodates multiple sites and benches. The $125 dedicated server options are for organizations prioritizing server isolation or the listed infrastructure capabilities. These are hosting prices, not per-employee HR software prices.

Frappe says organizations can self-implement or work with certified partners. Product Warranty covers bug fixes, not functional support, so teams needing help configuring or operating HR processes should account for partner support separately.

Platforms

Frappe HR supports web, iOS, Android, API access, and self-hosted deployment. The mobile app provides access to HR functions on smartphones; organizations can choose between self-managed hosting and Frappe Cloud hosting.

Who it's for

Frappe HR can suit small businesses as well as enterprises, including organizations with thousands of employees. Its open-source license, modular scope, integrations, and customization tools make it a stronger fit for teams that can manage deployment decisions and tailor workflows. Organizations that want functional support included with bug fixes, or prefer not to take on hosting and implementation, should weigh those responsibilities carefully.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad HR and payroll coverage: Recruitment, employee lifecycle management, attendance, leave, expenses, performance, payroll, and income tax sit within one product.
Payroll flexibility: Multiple currencies, off-cycle payments, loans, and timesheet-based payroll address more than basic salary runs.
Open-source and customizable: AGPL-3.0 licensing and Frappe Framework tools allow self-hosting and tailored forms, workflows, reports, and dashboards.
Several deployment choices: Self-hosting and multiple Frappe Cloud configurations let organizations choose how to run the software.

Cons

Free software still carries operating costs: Hosting, setup, backups, security, email, and maintenance can add to a self-hosted VPS estimate of around $40/month.
Support has a boundary: Product Warranty covers bug fixes but excludes functional support, which may require certified partner assistance.
Implementation is part of the decision: Teams must self-implement or obtain partner support, making this less straightforward for organizations seeking a fully managed HR tool.
