Overview

EdOptimize separates analytics into platform usage, curriculum activity, and implementation across districts, schools, and classes. That division gives product, teaching, and district teams views suited to their different questions. The trade-off is that the dashboards depend on users preparing and processing data rather than connecting a system and immediately viewing reports.

Inputs are online platform event logs and assessment item-response data. For each dashboard, users prepare the input data, run its R data-preparation scripts, and then launch its app.R file. This workflow gives technically equipped teams a way to work with an open-source tool, but creates a real setup burden for teams without R and data-preparation skills. Live demos for all three dashboards are hosted on shinyapps.io.

Key features

Platform Analytics

Platform Analytics covers overall usage, trends over time, geography, product and content-type usage, and leaderboards. It is useful for product teams assessing engagement patterns across content and time. The geography view supports US states by default; teams working with other geographies must modify it.

Curriculum Analytics

Curriculum Analytics brings together content usage, assessment and item analysis, skill performance, curriculum pacing, and leaderboards. Curriculum teams can use that range to examine both what learners use and how they perform against skills. It is a focused curriculum view, rather than a general-purpose analytics suite.

Implementation Analytics

Implementation Analytics tracks usage across a district, its schools, and classes. That hierarchy makes it relevant to district leaders and success managers monitoring adoption at multiple levels, rather than only at the product or curriculum level.

Pricing

EdOptimize is free and open source. The Open source (GPLv3) plan costs 0.00 USD per free. Modifications and copies must retain the GPLv3 license and disclose their source code, a meaningful condition for organizations that plan to adapt or redistribute the software. Free access avoids a subscription cost, but does not remove the work of preparing data and running the dashboards.

Platforms

EdOptimize is self-hosted and web-based. Users run the dashboard applications after completing the data-preparation steps, so it suits teams able to manage that workflow. The maintainers invite users to open a GitHub issue for help modifying dashboards and provide an email contact for professional help.

Who it's for

EdTech product teams can use Platform Analytics to review usage, while curriculum teams can examine content, assessments, skills, and pacing. District leaders and success managers have the district-to-class usage view in Implementation Analytics. EdOptimize is a stronger fit for these teams when they can prepare event-log and assessment data and operate R apps; teams seeking a ready-to-use hosted analytics service should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Three distinct dashboards address product usage, curriculum performance, and implementation across district structures, so different K–12 teams can focus on relevant questions.
Pros: The free GPLv3 plan provides an open-source option for teams willing to follow its source-disclosure and licensing conditions.
Cons: Users must prepare input data, run dashboard-specific R scripts, and launch each app, adding technical work before analysis can begin.
Cons: Geographic reporting supports US states by default, so other geographies require modification.
Cons: GPLv3 requires modifications and copies to retain the license and disclose source code, which may not suit every organization's distribution plans.
