Overview

ProtoPie is an interactive prototyping tool for product designers who need to model behavior beyond static screens. It is strongest when a prototype needs to respond to input, device sensors, or activity across multiple devices; a workflow that depends on common export formats should look elsewhere.

Key features

Interactions with real inputs

ProtoPie supports multi-touch gestures, conditional logic, text input, media playback, voice prototyping, and camera access, as well as sensors such as gyroscopes and compasses. That range makes it suitable for demonstrating interactions shaped by device context, not just navigation between screens. Logic, variables, and formulas add room for changing states, though the range of interactions will matter less to teams making simple click-through mockups.

A connected design workflow

The product is split across Studio for macOS and Windows, Player for mobile devices, Cloud for sharing, and Connect for advanced connected experiences. Player is available for iOS, iPadOS, Android, and HarmonyOS. ProtoPie can connect phones, tablets, TVs, and wearables in one prototype and synchronize their interactions, a useful distinction for teams designing experiences that span devices.

Plugins import designs from Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD, giving designers a way to bring existing work into a prototype. The workflow also includes developer handoff and team libraries on Pro, but the Free plan omits Handoff and Team Libraries. Prototypes export only as .pie files: teams that need PDF, JPEG, or HTML code exports will find that a material constraint.

Security and administration

ProtoPie states that it maintains ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 compliance and complies with GDPR. Enterprise supports SSO through SAML 2.0 and OpenID Connect, including Okta, Auth0, and OneLogin; its Cloud uses Palo Alto Web Firewall protections and undergoes annual penetration tests. ProtoPie AI is opt-in for Basic and Pro users and disabled by default for Enterprise organizations. These controls make Enterprise the relevant tier for organizations with those access and security requirements.

Pricing

ProtoPie uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and provides two prototypes saved in Cloud, up to eight scenes per prototype, 50MB of Cloud storage, and personal libraries. Studio features are included except Team Libraries, local file saving, share links, and Handoff. The two-upload cap and missing sharing and handoff features make Free better for learning the authoring workflow than for sustained collaboration.

Basic costs 25.00 USD per month, billed yearly, for one seat. It raises capacity to 20 Cloud prototypes, 10 scenes per prototype, and 500MB of Cloud storage, and adds one handoff recording, shareable links, and no watermark. It suits an individual who needs to share prototypes and hand work off, but the single seat and limited storage make it a poor fit for a larger team.

Pro costs 47.00 USD per month, billed yearly, per editor. It includes unlimited prototypes and handoff recordings, 5GB of Cloud storage per team, local prototype saving, Team Libraries, and ProtoPie MCP beta. The higher price buys room for ongoing team work and removes several Basic limits; the per-editor charge is worth weighing as a team grows. Enterprise has custom pricing, requires a minimum of three seats, and is arranged through sales.

Platforms

ProtoPie lists Android, API, iOS, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms, with cloud, self-hosted, desktop, and mobile deployment options. Its named components have more specific roles: Studio is for macOS and Windows, while Player supports iOS, iPadOS, Android, and HarmonyOS devices. That distinction matters when choosing a workflow for a particular device.

Who it's for

ProtoPie is a good fit for solo designers and product teams building high-fidelity prototypes with conditional behavior, device inputs, or synchronized interactions across hardware. Basic is the clearest fit for an individual who needs share links and handoff; Pro is better suited to teams that need shared libraries, local files, and higher capacity. It is less suitable for anyone who requires PDF, JPEG, or HTML exports, or whose work fits within the Free plan's collaboration limits.

Pros and cons

Pros: Inputs, sensors, voice, and conditional logic support prototypes that can represent device-specific behavior.
Pros: Cross-device synchronization can model experiences across phones, tablets, TVs, and wearables in one prototype.
Pros: Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD plugins bring existing designs into the workflow.
Cons: Export is restricted to .pie files, excluding PDF, JPEG, and HTML code.
Cons: Free lacks share links, local saving, and Handoff, while Basic is limited to one seat.

Alternatives

UXPin is worth considering for readers who want a freemium alternative with a free trial and a limited free plan after the 14-day trial ends, which includes two prototypes and 50 AI credits.

Justinmind may suit readers who want a free plan with one project, unlimited screens and viewers, UI design, wireframing, and interactive input forms.

Mockplus is an option for teams seeking a free-forever plan with 10 users, 10 active projects, unlimited designs, three project folders, and one admin.

MasterGo offers a free 初创版 plan with 10 personal draft files, three team members, three pages per file, and 10,000 layers per page.

Proto.io has a free plan for one user, one active project, five prototype screens, and 10 MB of storage, making it a smaller-capacity option for basic prototyping.

Lunacy offers a free plan with up to 10 cloud documents and 10 document editors or exporters.

Penpot is another freemium option, with web and self-hosted platforms.

Verdict

Choose ProtoPie if you need detailed, input-responsive prototypes or a synchronized experience across devices, and can work within its .pie export format. Its breadth of interaction tools is the main reason to choose it; the export restriction and Free plan's sharing limits are the clearest reasons to look elsewhere.
