Overview

Qualtrics is a survey and experience-management platform for organizations that need structured research, from small academic projects to sensitive enterprise programs. Its broad survey logic, analysis tools, and higher-volume plans make it a strong fit for complex research; the free account is more constrained than its generous survey-question cap first suggests.

Key features

Even the free account supports skip, display, and branch logic, which lets individual researchers tailor survey paths without paying. It allows 30 questions per survey, but caps the account at three active surveys and 500 responses, and offers eight question types. Those limits suit modest projects, not ongoing or high-volume programs.

Paid Strategic Research plans expand the design toolkit to 23 question types, including audio and video responses, and support unlimited surveys, questions, and users on the small-business plan. More than 20 guided research solutions provide ready-made workflows, while surveys can be delivered in more than 70 languages. Dashboards cover 24 languages, a narrower reach that matters for teams serving multilingual audiences.

Qualtrics combines response analytics with advanced tools such as crosstabs, statistical methods, and generative-AI summaries of video responses. Data exports include CSV, TSV, Excel, and SPSS, giving research teams several routes into other analysis workflows. Simulation, prediction, and actions intended to support trusted outcomes extend the platform beyond collection and reporting, though the value of those capabilities will depend on a team's research process.

The XM Data & AI platform is designed to combine experience data with human context to support decisions. Qualtrics says it has 25 years of experience-data expertise, and enterprises, governments, and healthcare organizations use it for sensitive programs. Those credentials point to an enterprise orientation, but do not make the entry-level account a substitute for the higher-volume enterprise plan.

Pricing

Qualtrics Surveys Free: $0.00 USD per free. The individual account includes one user, three active surveys, 30 questions per survey, 500 total responses, and eight question types, with no credit card required. It is a practical starting point for a single researcher with limited response needs; the one-user seat and 500-response ceiling make it a poor fit for collaborative or large-scale work.

Strategic Research: $420.00 USD per month, billed $5,040 USD annually, for 1,000 responses shared across all users. The small-team plan includes unlimited users, surveys, and questions per survey, plus 23 question types. Its shared response pool makes the annual commitment a key consideration: a team must judge whether 1,000 responses across all users will cover its work. It fits groups that need collaboration and richer question formats, but not organizations requiring substantially more volume.

Strategic Research Custom: custom pricing based on interactions. The enterprise plan includes 5,000 or more responses, 23 question types, and unlimited users, surveys, and questions per survey. It is the relevant tier for organizations that outgrow the shared 1,000-response allowance; custom pricing and interaction-based billing make it less straightforward to budget than the individual plan.

A 30-day Strategic Research trial provides access to most premium features, with some restrictions. If users do not upgrade, it automatically downgrades to the free account after 30 days. That offers a defined evaluation window without a permanent paid commitment, but teams should plan around the free tier's one-user and 500-response limits afterward.

Platforms

Qualtrics lists API access and a survey API. The platform facts identify API rather than desktop or mobile apps, so readers seeking a native device app should confirm that API access fits their workflow.

Who it's for

Qualtrics is best suited to research teams, academics, and organizations that need branching surveys, multilingual collection, deeper analysis, or shared team capacity. The free account is appropriate for an individual running a bounded survey; Strategic Research suits small teams that can work within 1,000 shared responses; and the custom enterprise plan is aimed at higher-volume programs. It is less compelling for someone who needs a multi-user free plan or a large response allowance without an annual paid commitment.

Pros and cons

Pro: Branching logic is included in the free account, allowing a solo researcher to build conditional surveys without upgrading.
Pro: Paid plans offer unlimited team users and surveys, 23 question types, and more than 20 guided solutions, making the small-team tier capable of supporting varied research workflows.
Pro: Exports in formats including SPSS and Excel, alongside crosstabs and statistical tools, support analysis beyond basic response summaries.
Con: The free account is restricted to one user and 500 responses, so collaborative research or larger samples require a paid plan.
Con: Strategic Research's 1,000 responses are shared across all users and the listed price is billed annually, so teams must weigh both pooled capacity and upfront annual commitment.
Con: Dashboard language coverage is 24 languages, well below the more than 70 languages supported for surveys.

inploi is a paid web and API alternative with custom pricing based on hiring size. Sense is a paid option across Android, iOS, web, API, and extension platforms; its SMS/WhatsApp Messaging plan starts at $500.00 USD per month. Amply is a paid web alternative. Hirebridge Engage is a paid web and API option with a Starter plan at $399.00 USD per month and a Pro plan at $1,099.00 USD per month. Phenom Candidate Experience is a paid web and API alternative with pricing by request. Talk2Apply offers tailored pricing based on candidate or student volume, workflow needs, and implementation scope.

Verdict

Choose Qualtrics if your research needs branching, robust analysis, or a path from individual surveys to shared team and enterprise capacity. Its free tier is useful for a limited solo project, while paid plans bring broader question formats and collaboration. Look elsewhere if you need a free team account, more than 500 responses without upgrading, or a lower-commitment alternative to annual billing.
