Overview

Clockify is a time-tracking and project-work platform for freelancers and teams that need to connect recorded hours with projects, billing, and approvals. Its free tier makes it a practical starting point for a small group, while the paid plans add workflows and administrative controls as needs grow.

The breadth is its strongest case: time can be logged in several ways and carried into reporting, billing, and team administration. The trade-off is that useful capacity and controls are divided across paid tiers, and the free plan stops at five users.

Key features

Recording time and project work

Timers, timesheets, and a calendar give users different ways to capture work; offline tracking is also supported. An auto tracker records apps and websites, but that activity is visible only to the individual user, so it is not a manager-facing monitoring feed. Project tracking and billable time connect hours to client or internal work.

Reports and billing

Reports, data export, rates, invoicing, and expenses cover much of the path from logged time to billing and review. That makes Clockify more useful than a basic stopwatch for teams that need to organize and share work records, though invoicing and expense capabilities sit in paid plans rather than the free offer.

Team workflows and integrations

Team administration covers members, roles, approvals, and permissions. Integrations with Outlook, Google Calendar, Asana, Trello, Jira, ClickUp, Salesforce, and more than 80 web apps can fit tracking into an existing toolset. Support is available around the clock every day, including holidays, and Clockify describes it as human-based.

Pricing

Clockify uses a freemium model. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and supports up to five users with unlimited time tracking. It is a strong fit for a small team that chiefly needs to record hours, but it is not the route to paid-plan features such as invoicing, approvals, scheduling, or enterprise controls.

Basic — 3.99 USD per month, billed annually: Adds administration, kiosk, billable rates, data export and sharing, and project templates. Every active or invited user takes a paid seat; deactivated users do not. Best for teams wanting basic administration and billable rates without higher-tier workflows.
Standard — 5.49 USD per month, billed annually: Adds time off, invoicing, timesheet approval, manager role, and task rates. It suits teams that need review and billing workflows rather than only time capture.
Pro — 7.99 USD per month, billed annually: Adds scheduling, forecasting, labor cost and profit tracking, budgets and estimates, and expenses. This is the more relevant tier for teams planning capacity and monitoring project economics.
Enterprise — 11.99 USD per month, billed annually: Adds single sign-on, custom subdomains, SCIM provisioning, account controls, and audit logs. Choose it when identity and account governance matter.
Kiosk Basic — 0.79 USD per month, billed annually at 0.79 per limited seat/month; Kiosk Standard — 1.19 USD per month, billed annually at 1.19 per limited seat/month; Kiosk Pro — 1.59 USD per month, billed annually at 1.59 per limited seat/month; Kiosk Enterprise — 2.39 USD per month, billed annually at 2.39 per limited seat/month: These are kiosk-only plans with limited seats, suited to organizations that need kiosk access rather than full Clockify access for each seat.
Productivity Suite — 12.99 USD per month, billed annually at $12.99 per seat/month: Bundles Enterprise features, excluding data regions; consider it if the bundle fits better than Enterprise alone.

Clockify advertises a 7-day trial and says subscriptions can be canceled anytime. The annual billing terms and the seat rule matter when estimating team costs: active and invited users count on the main paid plans, while deactivated users do not.

Platforms

Clockify offers access on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Android, and iOS. Desktop and mobile apps are supported, giving teams options across computers, browsers, and phones.

Who it's for

Clockify is a good fit for freelancers and small teams that want a free way to capture unlimited time, then for growing teams that need project billing, approvals, or stronger administration in one system. It is less suitable for a group that needs more than five free seats or expects all billing and management tools without moving to a paid plan.

Pros and cons

Pros

Useful free starting point: Up to five users can track unlimited time without a subscription.
Broad work-to-billing coverage: Projects, billable time, reports, export, invoicing, and expenses support more than simple hour logging.
Tiered team controls: Approvals, manager roles, SSO, and audit logs provide a path to more formal workflows and governance.
Wide access and integrations: Desktop, mobile, browser, and integrations with 80+ web apps can accommodate mixed tool environments.

Cons

Free capacity is capped: The no-cost plan is limited to five users, so larger teams must budget for seats.
Capabilities are tiered: Invoicing, approvals, scheduling, and Enterprise controls require higher paid plans, making the headline entry price an incomplete guide to the cost of a team's needs.
Invitations count toward seats: Active and invited users occupy paid seats even before they are active contributors; only deactivated users are excluded.
Auto-tracker visibility is individual: Managers cannot use its app and website records as a shared team activity view.

Alternatives

Harvest is worth considering for an individual freelancer: its free plan is built for one seat and two projects.

Invoice Ninja is an alternative for readers prioritizing invoicing, with a free plan that includes unlimited invoicing, five clients, and 11 invoice templates.

Avaza is another freemium option for readers comparing project collaboration and administrative roles, with unlimited project collaborators on its free plan alongside limited timesheet, expense, finance, scheduling, and chat users.

Paymo may suit a solo user who wants a free plan organized around one user, one client, two projects, and 1 GB of storage.

Bill4Time is an alternative with a Time & Billing plan at 49.00 USD per month that combines time tracking, task and client management, a client portal, and expense management.

Teamwork.com offers a free plan with five projects, five users, and 100 automations; it may be worth comparing for teams weighing project management limits alongside time tracking.

Deltek Maconomy is an enterprise ERP option for professional services firms, with pricing by demo request.

Kimai is a paid alternative with an annual Standard plan at 2.99 EUR per month covering project time tracking, billable hours, invoicing, and data export.

Verdict

Clockify is a strong choice for small teams that want unlimited time tracking at no cost and a clear route to project billing, approvals, and administration as they grow. Its range of tools and platforms is the main reason to choose it; the five-user free ceiling and paid-seat requirements are the reasons to look elsewhere or budget carefully.
