Overview

Workday Adaptive Planning is a companywide financial and operational planning platform for organizations that need budgeting, forecasting, and analytics across teams. It suits businesses coordinating complex plans and scenarios; its breadth is compelling, though custom pricing and a Salesforce import restriction deserve attention.

Workday says its AI can handle routine tasks, make recommendations, and predict future outcomes, while advanced analytics supports testing models and scenarios. Dashboards, self-service reports, and process guidance help users collaborate around plans. Workday reports average user results of 70% shorter planning cycles and 50% increased productivity; those figures are not a promise for every organization.

Key features

Planning and forecasting: Budgeting, forecasting, forecast-versus-actual analysis, workforce planning, financial consolidation, and financial and operational modeling support planning across the company rather than only within finance.
Scenarios and versions: Unlimited what-if scenarios and versions let teams compare alternatives without a stated cap, useful for organizations that revisit assumptions frequently.
Data connections: Connections cover any ERP or general ledger and other sources, including Workday, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics GP, spreadsheets, databases, and cloud or on-premises systems. Excel connectivity sends financial data to reports and presentations with one click.
Salesforce caveat: Salesforce imports exclude report data, data created through app integrations, and objects requiring a subquery. Teams relying on those sources should confirm that their needed data can be brought in before choosing the product.
Administration and controls: Single sign-on and an unlimited audit trail are included. Integration APIs support data import and export, as well as model management and security administration.
Deployment and support: Production and non-production instances are included; secondary instances depend on the contract. The offering includes 24/7 support, training resources, and Workday Community access. Named Support Contacts can submit cases at any time for product defects, instance management, customer care, and training inquiries.

Pricing

Workday Adaptive Planning uses custom pricing, with quotes required for both the core planning product and Close & Consolidation. The core offering includes planning with any ERP or GL connection, unlimited versions, and unlimited what-if scenarios. The Close & Consolidation option adds close and consolidation to planning; its price also varies by quote. Consolidation pricing therefore needs to be settled separately with Workday.

A 30-day free trial provides access to core planning capabilities, guided walkthroughs, and a step-by-step guide for planning, reporting, and dashboards. There is no free plan, and the trial carries no obligation. Organizations should compare the quoted scope and contract terms, particularly for secondary instances, before committing.

Platforms

The product is listed for Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows, and provides APIs. Workday's technology requirements identify supported browsers on Windows and Mac and tablet support for selected pages, including iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy S2 among named devices. This indicates that desktop browser support is the clearest fit; tablet capability is limited to selected pages.

Who it's for

Workday positions Adaptive Planning for decision-makers across organizations of all sizes. Its companywide modeling, workforce planning, scenario capacity, and broad data connections are most relevant to organizations coordinating financial and operational plans across teams. Smaller groups seeking a straightforward, clearly priced budgeting tool may prefer to compare options first, since this product is quote-based and built around broad planning needs.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited versions, what-if scenarios, audit trail, and no listed data limits support extensive modeling and record-keeping without stated capacity ceilings.
Pro: ERP/GL, Excel, API, and other data-source connections can bring planning inputs together across varied systems.
Pro: 24/7 support, training resources, and guided trial materials give teams support while assessing or operating the platform.
Con: Custom quotes for planning and consolidation make costs harder to compare before engaging Workday.
Con: Salesforce import exclusions may interrupt workflows that depend on report data, app-generated data, or subquery-requiring objects.
Con: Secondary deployment instances depend on the contract, so teams needing additional environments should settle that scope in advance.
