Overview

Matomo combines web analytics with heatmaps, session recordings, A/B testing, funnels and flows. It supports event and ecommerce tracking, conversion funnels and API access, and offers more than 100 integrations. Matomo says its data is unsampled, which is useful for teams that want analytics without sampling, while raw data is retained for 24 months and report data indefinitely.

Hosting is a consequential choice. Cloud data is stored in Frankfurt, Germany; self-hosted on-premise software is free forever. Matomo says both options provide full data ownership. The platform supports GDPR compliance, cookieless tracking and anonymisation, and is certified to ISO 27001:2022.

Key features

Heatmaps and session recordings let teams examine visitor interactions, while funnels and flows help analyse paths toward conversion. These tools make Matomo more than a reporting-only choice, though the plan’s hit and user allowances still matter for growing teams.

Administration includes user limits, access controls and audit logs, with SAML or LDAP options across plans. Support ranges from forums and email to dedicated Customer Success and chat, so the service level depends on the plan rather than being uniform.

Pricing

The Community plan costs 0.00 USD per free, is free forever, and allows unlimited users and hits, with forum support. It is the strongest fit for organisations comfortable with self-hosting and community-based help; it avoids a usage cap but does not include the higher-touch support offered on paid plans.

Team costs 275.00 EUR per month, billed monthly, for up to 4 users and 5M hits per month, with email support. It suits smaller teams that want cloud service and can stay within those caps. Cloud plans also offer annual billing with two months free, and a 21-day Cloud trial requires no credit card.

Business has custom pricing and allows up to 20 users and 30M hits per month. Enterprise is shown as EUR 3400 per month on our read (localised), with up to 50 users and 100M hits per month, dedicated Customer Success and priority support. VIP has custom pricing and limits, dedicated support and enhanced security services. These higher tiers suit organisations needing more capacity or support, but their price and limits should be weighed against the scale required. Cloud can scale to hundreds of millions of hits per month.

Platforms

Matomo is available as Cloud-hosted or self-hosted on-premise software, with API access. Cloud is the more suitable route for teams preferring hosted service; self-hosting suits organisations that want to run the software themselves.

Who it's for

Matomo is a strong fit for organisations prioritising data ownership, privacy controls and a broad analytics toolkit, especially when self-hosting or choosing a cloud quota that fits their traffic. It is less suitable for teams that need unlimited cloud usage on a low-cost paid tier or require dedicated support without moving to a higher plan.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free self-hosting with unlimited users and hits makes Community viable for organisations able to manage on-premise software.
Pro: Funnels, heatmaps, session recordings, A/B testing and ecommerce tracking cover analysis beyond basic traffic reporting.
Pro: Data ownership, cookieless tracking and anonymisation support privacy-conscious deployments.
Con: Team’s 4-user and 5M-hit monthly caps may constrain growing cloud deployments.
Con: Community includes forum support only; stronger support options sit on paid plans.

Alternatives

For tag-management needs, compare Tag Management Software. For broader analytics comparisons, see Web analytics tools; for interaction analysis, see Heatmap and session replay tools or Session Replay Software.

Stape is worth considering when server-side tagging and a low-cost pay-as-you-go entry are the priority; its listed plan is 8.00 USD per month, billed $100 yearly, for Meta CAPI Gateway and one pixel, with additional pixels costing $8 each. TAGGRS may suit teams focused on request-based tag management: its free plan allows up to 10.000 requests, while Basic costs 25.00 USD per month for 750.000 requests. Addingwell offers a free plan with 100,000 requests and a premium private network; its paid Pay as you go plan starts at 90.00 EUR per month.

Cloudflare Zaraz may fit teams already choosing event-based tag management, with 1,000,000 events monthly in its free allocation and a paid tier at 5.00 USD per month. Commanders Act Tag Management is another paid tag-management option. Tealium AudienceStream CDP is a paid CDP whose pricing is based on inbound events, with no per-seat fees or integration charges. Google Analytics is a free-of-charge option for businesses of every size, with measurement across websites and apps and reporting for acquisition, engagement, conversion and monetization. JENTIS is a paid alternative offering hybrid tag management and server-side tracking.

Verdict

Choose Matomo if data ownership, privacy controls and a wide analytics feature set matter more than a simple hosted plan with generous uncapped usage. Its free self-hosted Community edition is compelling for teams able to operate their own installation; cloud buyers should check user, hit and support limits closely. Look elsewhere if those caps or tiered support do not fit your needs.
