Overview

Jack combines WhatsApp, SMS, email, and web chat in one inbox, using property information to answer routine guest questions and sending complex issues to staff with context. That balance makes it a practical automation layer for repetitive communication, not a replacement for staff handling situations that need judgment.

Self-hosting keeps guest data on the property’s server, and the open-source plan has no per-message or per-room fees. Operators still need to deploy and maintain the system, pay for hosting, and potentially cover messaging and AI service costs. This is a better fit for teams that value control over turnkey simplicity.

Key features

Guest messaging and handoff

The unified inbox covers WhatsApp, SMS, email, and web chat. WhatsApp connects through the WhatsApp Business API, SMS through Twilio, and property email through SMTP/IMAP. Jack can answer routine requests automatically and route complex ones to staff with context. That can reduce repetitive work while preserving a human path for exceptions, though operators must configure the relevant services.

Property knowledge and AI options

Operators can train the knowledge base on property information so responses address guest questions in context. Jack supports Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, Ollama, and built-in local models, giving teams a choice between external AI services and processing on their own server. Local AI avoids API charges and can work offline, but responses are simpler and running models requires about 2 GB of RAM.

Deployment and API

Jack documents one-click cloud deployment and Docker installation, with Mac, Windows, and Linux Docker options. Its REST API covers conversations, guests, tasks, knowledge-base entries, staff, and settings. The documented limits are 100 standard requests per minute and 10 bulk-operation requests per minute, so high-volume integrations should account for the lower bulk ceiling.

Pricing

Jack’s Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free. It is free and open source, with AI responses, a workflow builder, two-way SMS, MMS support, and API access; there are no per-message fees or per-room pricing. There is no free trial because the product has a free plan.

Free does not mean cost-free to operate. The maker estimates production hosting at about $5–10 per month and AI API use at about $5–20 per month; local AI has no API cost. Those estimates make Jack attractive where an operator can manage its own deployment and wants to avoid usage-based AI charges with local models, but the hosting and service setup remain part of the decision.

Platforms

Jack supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows environments. The documented deployment paths include cloud deployment and Docker, with Docker options for Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Who it's for

Hotels, vacation rentals, hostels, and property managers are the intended users. Jack is strongest for properties that receive recurring questions across multiple channels and have the technical capacity to host and configure software. Operators seeking a managed messaging product with less deployment responsibility should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: One inbox spans WhatsApp, SMS, email, and web chat, giving staff a shared place to handle guest communication.
Pros: Property-trained responses and contextual staff handoff target routine questions without forcing complex issues into automation.
Pros: Self-hosting keeps guest data on the property’s server, while local AI can work offline without API costs.
Cons: Hosting and messaging integrations require operator setup, so the free software is not a hands-off service.
Cons: External AI can add estimated monthly costs, while local models require about 2 GB of RAM and produce simpler responses.

Alternatives

For a broader customer messaging option, Crisp has a free plan with two seats, 100 customer profiles, unlimited conversations, and no AI credits; choose it if those limits fit better than running a self-hosted hospitality concierge.

AthenaText has a free plan with zero credits and no AI replies, plus a Core plan at 49.00 USD per month; it is an option for readers comparing a priced AI-oriented service rather than Jack’s self-hosted setup.

Clickatell SMS API is a pay-as-you-go SMS API with message prices that vary by destination and message type; choose it when outgoing SMS is the main need rather than a multi-channel property inbox.

ConvoCore offers a forever-free plan with 500 monthly credits, estimated at about 182 messages, and a one-time 500-credit trial; it may suit readers comparing a credit-limited messaging option.

Gupshup applies a standard 0.001 USD per-message fee, with WhatsApp fees billed at actuals; consider it when messaging fees are an acceptable trade-off for that service.

Sarufi offers a Developer plan with 1,000 messages per month; it is another option for readers comparing message-limited plans.

Aircall starts with an Essentials plan at 30.00 USD per month, billed as 3 licenses for $90/month annually, and includes a phone number and 250+ integrations; choose it when that phone-focused package better suits the operation.

Sinch Engage has plans with stated SMS quotas of 3,000 or 10,000 per month; it is an alternative for readers comparing quota-based messaging plans.

Verdict

Jack The Butler is a strong choice for hospitality operators who want a self-hosted, multi-channel concierge with property-trained routine replies and human handoff. Its defining advantage is control over guest data and AI deployment; its main drawback is the responsibility for hosting, integrations, and any external AI costs. Choose it when that control is worth the operational work, and look elsewhere for a managed service.
