Overview

Billables AI is a background timekeeping tool for legal and professional-services teams that want to capture work without relying on timers. Its strongest fit is a practice that needs matter-linked entries and manager-facing reporting; custom pricing makes it harder to weigh against alternatives before contacting the company.

Key features

Billables tracks activity across email, documents, and cases, then drafts time entries with client and matter matches and detailed work narratives. That approach can help busy professionals account for work that is easy to miss when switching between matters. It also means the system accesses file and correspondence contents to create billable records, a meaningful consideration for teams with strict data-handling requirements.

Client billing guidelines can be uploaded so entries reflect client-specific rules. This is useful for firms serving clients with different billing requirements, but it does not replace review: users can edit or delete records before export or sharing.

Reports break time down by user, client, matter, and activity, including billable versus non-billable hours and approval status. Matter tracking and billable rates are supported. Named billing integrations include Centerbase, SurePoint, Clio, MyCase, LeanLaw, and Litify, which makes Billables a more natural fit for firms using one of those systems than for teams dependent on another billing platform.

Billables says it has an independently audited SOC 2 Type II report and is designed to support HIPAA requirements and GDPR privacy principles. It also says data is encrypted in transit and at rest, access is role-restricted and logged, and customer data is logically isolated. The company says contents are not copied or stored in its system, while generated records remain under customer control for management and deletion. These controls address important concerns, but firms should still decide whether background access to correspondence and files suits their policies.

Pricing

Billables AI is paid, with custom pricing on request. That may suit firms whose needs call for a tailored conversation, but buyers cannot compare a published seat price, quota, or plan structure before contacting the company. Request pricing alongside confirmation of how its billing integrations and review process fit your workflow.

Platforms

Billables supports web, Windows, macOS, and browser extensions. Its extension is available for Chrome and Microsoft Edge, but Chrome extensions do not work on mobile devices. The desktop app can be downloaded for Windows or Mac, making this a desktop-oriented option rather than a mobile-first one.

Who it's for

Attorneys, managing partners, and legal administrators are the clearest audience. Consultants and other professional-services teams may also benefit from passive capture, matter-level entries, and reporting, particularly when their billing system is among the named integrations. Teams that need a mobile Chrome extension, public pricing for straightforward budget comparisons, or a different billing integration should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Background capture avoids dependence on starting and stopping timers, which can help account for work across multiple matters.
Pro: Client and matter matching, narrative drafts, and uploadable billing guidelines give teams a useful starting point for client-ready entries.
Pro: Reporting includes approval status as well as billable and non-billable time, giving managers more context than a simple hours total.
Con: It accesses email, document, and case contents to generate records, which may not suit every organization's privacy policies.
Con: Custom pricing makes it difficult to evaluate cost before contacting the company.
Con: Chrome extensions do not work on mobile devices, limiting that route for users who work primarily on phones.

Alternatives

Compare legal time tracking software if you want to consider a wider category of tools.

PointOne is another paid option, with iOS, macOS, web, and Windows support.
Bill4Time is worth considering if you want a freemium option or broad device coverage, including iOS and Android. Its Time & Billing plan is 49.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes time tracking, task and client management, a client portal, and expense management.
Chrometa offers published monthly pricing: Standard is 19.00 USD per month with unlimited time entries, while Plus is 29.00 USD per month with unlimited projects. Consider it if those published limits and prices are a closer fit.
iTimekeep offers a free trial and asks buyers to request a demo or trial for pricing; it also supports Android, iOS, web, and extensions.
Laurel is another paid option with pricing by request and support for Android, iOS, web, Windows, and API.
RTG Bills offers a free trial and starts at 15.95 USD per month for one user, with price varying by user count. Consider it if you want a stated starting price and broad platform support.
WiseTime offers a free trial and an Enterprise plan with pricing through a sales demo; the plan includes unlimited team members and data retention up to two years.
LeanLaw may suit firms that want a published per-user price and a broader practice-management billing set: Core is 55.00 USD per user per month and includes time and expense tracking, e-payments, a reporting dashboard, and trust accounting.

Verdict

Billables AI is best for legal and professional-services teams that want to turn background activity into reviewable, matter-linked time entries and can accept custom pricing. Its strongest reasons to choose it are passive capture, client billing guidelines, and reporting that includes approval status. Look elsewhere if you need mobile Chrome-extension support, a public price for budgeting, or an integration outside its named billing systems.
