Overview

PayWhirl is subscription billing software for merchants selling memberships, payment plans, recurring invoices, and other repeat-payment offers. It is best suited to businesses that need several billing models and ways to connect billing to a storefront or custom site. The main trade-off is that subscription transaction fees sit on top of gateway or processor fees.

Recurring plans, installments, retainers, pre-orders, donations, manual subscriptions, and one-time payments are all supported. Automation covers scheduled charges, invoices, emails, payment retries, and dunning, reducing routine payment follow-up. Subscribers can update payment methods and billing details or change subscriptions through a self-service portal, but merchants control which actions the portal permits.

Merchant reporting includes MRR and ARR, customer lifetime value, churn, a payment calendar, geographic reporting, and growth forecasting. Connections include embeddable widgets, hosted payment links, API access, webhooks, and custom scripts, with integrations such as Shopify, BigCommerce, Squarespace, Wix, Stripe, Square, PayPal, Authorize.Net, Braintree, ShipStation, Mailchimp, Google Analytics, and Zapier. PayWhirl supports over 10 gateways and major credit and debit cards in more than 100 currencies, depending on gateway capabilities.

PayWhirl says full card numbers and verification codes are intended to pass directly to payment providers, not its servers, and that it maintains PCI-related controls appropriate to its role and system scope. Its data protection addendum says it processes merchant subscriber data and does not sell it or use it for unrelated advertising or profiling. Human help is offered for setup, gateway configuration, subscriber imports, and launch details.

Key features

Flexible billing: Installments, retainers, pre-orders, donations, and manual subscriptions broaden the fit beyond standard recurring plans. One-time payments are also supported.
Payment recovery: Automated retries and dunning can reduce manual recovery work when payments fail.
Subscriber control: The self-service portal supports payment and subscription changes, though the merchant decides which changes customers may make.
Integration choice: Widgets, payment links, APIs, webhooks, and scripts suit both ready-made storefront connections and custom implementations. The range is useful, but businesses should account for their own integration work.

Pricing

PayWhirl has free and paid plans, with paid plans starting at $9/mo. Paid plans include a 14-day free trial with the full application. Every plan may also incur payment gateway or processor fees, so the subscription price and PayWhirl transaction rate are not the whole cost.

Starter: $0 /mo and 3.0% per transaction, plus gateway processing fees. A no-monthly-cost entry point, but the transaction charge can matter as billing volume grows.
Free: $0 /mo and a 3% transaction fee, with the Shopify app; standard processor fees still apply. A free Shopify-focused option, with a higher transaction rate than the paid Shopify tiers.
Pro: $9 /mo and 2% per transaction, with the Shopify app and standard processor fees. The lowest paid Shopify plan reduces the transaction rate from Free.
Traction: $29 /mo and 1.5% per transaction, with the Shopify app and standard processor fees. It suits Shopify merchants weighing a higher monthly bill against a lower transaction charge.
Business Pro: $49 /mo and 2.0% per transaction, plus gateway processing fees. It costs more monthly than Pro while carrying the same stated transaction rate, so the listed rates alone do not make it an obvious upgrade.
Business Plus: $149 /mo and 1.0% per transaction, plus gateway processing fees. The lower rate may appeal to higher-volume businesses that can justify the monthly cost.
Scale: $149 /mo and 0.75% per transaction, with the Shopify app and standard processor fees. Among the Shopify plans, it pairs the highest listed monthly price with the lowest listed transaction rate.
Business Ultimate: $249 /mo and 0.5% per transaction, plus gateway processing fees. This is the highest-priced listed plan and the lowest stated rate among the fixed-price business plans.
Enterprise: Custom pricing with volume discounts for businesses processing more than $5,000,000 per year; payment gateway fees still apply. Contact sales for pricing.

Starter and Free have different stated transaction rates and contexts: Starter is the general free plan, while Free is identified with the Shopify app. Compare the plan’s applicable rate as well as monthly cost and processor fees.

Platforms

PayWhirl supports web and API use. It serves merchants using BigCommerce, custom websites, and a separate Shopify application, with multiple integration methods for connecting billing.

Who it's for

PayWhirl is a strong fit for merchants whose sales model spans subscriptions and other payment formats, especially those who need payment recovery, a subscriber portal, or integrations with an existing storefront. It is less compelling for a business seeking the lowest possible cost without transaction fees: even the free plans charge a PayWhirl transaction rate, in addition to processor fees.

Pros and cons

Pro: Supports recurring and one-time offers, plus specialized formats such as installments, retainers, donations, and pre-orders.
Pro: Combines billing automation, payment recovery, a configurable customer portal, and revenue reporting.
Pro: Multiple integration paths and gateway options can accommodate storefront and custom-site setups.
Con: Transaction fees apply even on free plans, and payment processing fees are additional.
Con: The portal’s customer controls depend on merchant settings, so subscribers may not be able to make every change themselves.

Verdict

Choose PayWhirl if your business needs multiple subscription and payment-plan formats, automated recovery, and flexible integration options in one billing service.
