Overview

Originally built to automate legal practice, Docassemble can support applications in other fields as well. An interview can produce a downloadable or emailed document, submit an application, interact with an API, or simply provide information. That makes it more than a document generator: it can serve as the front end for a process that changes questions according to what the user has already supplied.

The trade-off is that this flexibility comes with infrastructure and development responsibility. Interviews are authored with YAML, Markdown, and Python logic, and the maker recommends Docker for deployment. Organizations wanting a managed, ready-to-use product rather than a platform to configure should look elsewhere.

Key features

Interviews and document assembly

Conditional question logic lets an interview ask only for information needed in a particular case, which can make complex intake and application flows more focused. Templates can be built in DOCX or PDF, and a Word add-in supports DOCX workflows. Completed interviews can yield PDF, RTF, or DOCX files, by download or email, or pass information into an application or API.

Workflow reach and extensibility

Touchscreen signatures, live chat, screen sharing, remote screen control, AI, SMS, email, fax, OCR, multilingual interviews, and multiuser applications point to a platform intended to cover a wide range of interaction needs. Developers can extend interviews in Python and connect third-party applications through the API. Those options are useful for teams building tailored workflows, but they also make Docassemble a less natural fit for buyers seeking a narrowly scoped, low-configuration tool.

Files can be synchronized with a server through Google Drive, OneDrive, or a command-line utility. This gives teams several ways to handle file movement without changing the core interview approach.

Deployment and security

Docker is the recommended deployment route; Docker Compose, Helm, and installation without Docker are also described. Most deployments can run on one machine, while a cluster is an option for high performance. The software has no usage fees, but an internet-hosted server typically costs $10–$40 per month or more, depending on needs.

Security needs deliberate configuration. Interview answers are encrypted in the SQL database unless the multi_user variable is True, while uploaded and assembled documents are stored without encryption. HTTPS is recommended, and developer accounts can run arbitrary code on the server. Teams handling sensitive records should weigh these responsibilities before choosing a self-hosted deployment.

Pricing

The self-hosted Docassemble plan costs 0.00 USD per free and has no software fees. There is no lower-feature paid tier to trade against: users get the platform without a usage charge, while taking on hosting and operational decisions. An internet-hosted server typically costs $10–$40 per month or more depending on performance, availability, and support needs. That hosting estimate is not a software subscription price.

Platforms

Docassemble is available as a web application and supports Linux, self-hosted deployment, and API access. The deployment choices suit organizations able to manage their own infrastructure; the platform list does not point to native mobile apps.

Who it's for

Docassemble is a strong candidate for legal teams, public-service organizations, and other groups that need tailored interviews tied to documents, applications, or APIs—and have developers or technical administrators to build and operate them. Its questionnaire logic and Microsoft Word export support are especially relevant when intake must produce structured documents.

It is a poor fit for teams that need a turnkey hosted service, want assembled files encrypted automatically, or cannot safely manage developer access and server configuration. Documentation, a community Slack group, and GitHub issues provide routes for learning and support, but they do not remove the need for technical ownership.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free software with no usage fees keeps the product cost at zero, though hosting may still cost money.
Pros: Conditional interviews can generate or deliver several document formats and connect to applications through an API, supporting end-to-end workflows.
Pros: Python extensibility and multiple deployment approaches give technical teams room to tailor and scale their setup.
Cons: Hosting, deployment, and security configuration remain the user's responsibility, making the real cost more than the software price alone.
Cons: Uploaded and assembled documents are stored without encryption, a material concern for sensitive files.
Cons: Developer accounts can run arbitrary server code, so account access requires careful control.

Alternatives

For a different legal document automation option, compare Legal Document Automation Software, Legal Forms Software, Legal Workflow Automation Software, Document Automation Software, and Document Template Management Software.

Verdict

Choose Docassemble if you need a flexible interview-and-document platform, can write or commission its logic, and are prepared to run it securely. Its strongest case is the ability to connect conditional questionnaires, assembled files, and application workflows without software fees. Look elsewhere if you need managed hosting or encrypted storage for uploaded and completed documents without additional security work.
