Overview

OpenReplay is a session replay and analytics platform for product and engineering teams investigating how people use their applications. It suits organizations that want replay, behavioral analysis and control over where session data is stored.

Its strongest case is the combination of visual session context, product and web analytics, and deployment choices ranging from self-managed infrastructure to managed cloud. The trade-off is that a free self-managed setup leaves hosting and retention management to the team, while managed Dedicated starts at $199.00 USD per month.

Key features

Replay rebuilds a user's experience from page structure, clicks, scrolling, inputs and page changes. Rage-click detection and mobile capture broaden its usefulness for diagnosing friction beyond desktop web sessions. The 50,000 monthly session limit is a meaningful ceiling to check against expected traffic.

Privacy controls are a practical strength: Private mode obscures text and DevTools data by default, and field-level sanitization can keep sensitive values out of captured sessions. Teams still need to configure capture thoughtfully around their own data and privacy requirements.

Product analytics covers funnels, journeys, heatmaps, traffic metrics and user segmentation, with links from metrics to individual replays. Web analytics adds pages, referrers, traffic volume, engaged users and navigation drop-offs. This connection between aggregate patterns and individual sessions can help teams move from spotting a problem to examining its context.

Integrations pull backend logs from Sentry and Datadog, connect Redux and Vuex state, and support creating Jira or GitHub tickets and sharing through Slack. Event export to a data warehouse and a REST API for sessions, users, events and live data make OpenReplay relevant to teams building internal reporting or support workflows.

Deployment is flexible: self-host on your own infrastructure or use managed Dedicated, which runs on AWS, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure across 50 regions. OpenReplay states its cloud service is SOC 2 Type II compliant. Mobile tracker setup for iOS and Android is documented as beta, so teams should account for that status when evaluating mobile use. OpenReplay Spot, a Chrome extension, records and reports bugs with session details.

Pricing

The Open-Source plan costs 0.00 USD per free. It is self-managed on premises or with any cloud provider, with self-managed storage and retention, low-traffic positioning and community support through GitHub and Slack. It is the clearest fit for teams comfortable operating their own deployment; the operational burden and low-traffic positioning make it less suited to organizations seeking managed scale or support.

Serverless uses a usage-based cloud deployment and charges only for recorded sessions; pricing is custom pricing. That model may suit teams that prefer cloud delivery without a fixed session commitment, but it does not provide a stated cost for forecasting.

Dedicated costs 199.00 USD per month, billed hourly ($0.276/hr). OpenReplay manages the deployment on AWS, GCP or Azure, with up to 4TB storage, up to 32GB RAM, up to 8vCPUs and custom retention. It fits teams wanting managed infrastructure and room to configure retention; teams should weigh the starting price against their actual scale needs.

Enterprise has custom pricing and is self-hosted at scale, with SAML/SCIM, audit logging, dedicated support and onboarding architecture services, plus volume pricing.

OpenReplay offers a 7-day trial. The free plan's low-traffic positioning and self-managed retention are the main constraints; Dedicated's stated storage, compute and hourly billing terms are the clearest limits for paid users.

Platforms

OpenReplay supports Android, iOS, web, API, extension and self-hosted deployments. Mobile capture is supported, with iOS and Android tracker setup in beta. The Chrome extension provides a separate bug-recording and reporting route for browser users.

Who it's for

OpenReplay is best for product, engineering and support teams that need to connect behavioral analytics with session-level evidence, bring technical context into investigations, or export events into internal data systems. It is also a strong fit for teams with a preference or requirement for self-hosting. It is less compelling for teams that need fully managed service on a no-cost plan, or that require mature mobile tracker integrations without beta status.

Pros and cons

Pro: Metrics link to replays, so teams can investigate funnels, journeys and drop-offs in individual sessions.
Pro: Private mode and field-level sanitization provide concrete ways to limit sensitive data capture.
Pro: Self-hosting, managed cloud, event export and a REST API give teams options for deployment and downstream workflows.
Con: The free Open-Source plan is self-managed, with storage and retention left to the user and support limited to community channels.
Con: Serverless and Enterprise use custom pricing, making cost comparison less direct.
Con: iOS and Android tracker setup is beta, a qualification for teams relying on mobile capture.

Alternatives

For a smaller web replay setup with a defined low-cost entry point, FullSession has a free plan capped at 1,000 sessions per month, 30-day retention, two seats and one domain; its Growth plan is $49.00 USD per month for 10,000 sessions per month. Fullstory is another freemium option, with a free tier that includes 30,000 sessions, 10 user seats and one year of replay and product analytics retention.

Mouseflow offers a web-focused free plan capped at 500 sessions per month, one website project and one conversion funnel. Microsoft Clarity is a free alternative with unlimited heatmaps, websites, team members and no traffic limits, making it a straightforward choice when those limits matter more than OpenReplay's self-hosting and replay-to-analytics workflow.

Heap has a free plan with 10,000 monthly sessions and six months of data history. Inspectlet offers a free plan with 2,500 recorded sessions per month across up to three websites and no time limit. Browsee has a free plan with 1,500 recordings per month, one heatmap and 14 days of storage. Zipy is another freemium option with a Growth plan at $25.00 USD per month on annual billing.

Verdict

Choose OpenReplay if your team needs replay tied closely to product and web analytics, technical integrations and flexible hosting, especially when self-hosting or data export matters. Its privacy controls and managed Dedicated option strengthen the case. Look elsewhere if you need a plainly priced cloud plan below $199.00 USD per month, or if beta mobile tracker setup is too early for your requirements.
