Overview

GitHub operates npm’s registry and command-line interface. The free registry contains more than two million packages and is relied upon by more than 17 million developers worldwide, giving JavaScript projects a large pool of shared software to draw from. That scale is a practical advantage, though npm’s focus is JavaScript rather than general-purpose package management.

The free plan supports public package authors with unlimited public packages. Automatic security warnings are included across Free, Pro and Teams, and npm documents two-factor authentication for accounts, organizations, publishing and settings changes.

Key features

Packages and project workflows

npm accepts package.json folders, gzipped tarballs, URLs, name-and-version or name-and-tag references, and Git URLs. Dependency resolution, lockfiles and workspaces cover core project needs, while offline installation and private registry authentication add flexibility when working beyond the public registry.

Organization tools include members, teams, roles, permissions and package access management. Pro uses package-based permissions; Teams uses team-based permissions. npm also documents private-package use in CI/CD workflows and Docker, making it relevant to projects that need private dependencies in deployment pipelines.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, billed monthly. It is aimed at public package authors and includes unlimited public packages, public publishing and use, public registry access, and basic support. It is the sensible choice for open distribution, but it does not enable private publishing.

Paid billing begins when credit card information is submitted, and the first month is charged immediately. The Paid user account plan costs 7.00 USD per month and enables installation and publishing of private packages. Pro also costs 7.00 USD per month for an individual creator, with unlimited private packages, package-based permissions and basic support.

Teams costs 7.00 USD per user per month for teams and organizations. It includes unlimited private packages, team-based permissions and basic support. The per-user charge makes it more appropriate when shared access controls matter than when a solo developer only needs private publishing; for that case, Pro has the same stated monthly price without team-based permissions.

Platforms

npm supports Linux, macOS and Windows. Other operating systems can use it through Node.js installers or version managers. This broad reach makes it usable across common development environments without changing the package format or project workflow.

Who it's for

JavaScript developers publishing public packages can use the free plan without a stated package-count cap. Individual creators who need private publishing can move to Pro, while organizations that need team-based package permissions have a plan designed for that access model. Developers seeking a package manager centered on another language should look at tools built for that ecosystem instead.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited public packages on Free make npm suitable for open-source publishing without a package-count limit.
Pros: Dependency resolution, lockfiles, workspaces and offline installation cover varied project workflows.
Pros: Pro and Teams include unlimited private packages, with distinct permission models for individuals and organizations.
Cons: Private publishing is not part of Free, so private-package users must accept a recurring paid plan.
Cons: Teams is charged per user, which can make the cost grow as an organization adds members.
Cons: npm’s stated development focus is JavaScript, limiting its fit for package management in other language ecosystems.

Alternatives

Yarn is a free package manager with no paid plans or usage limits stated, a fit for readers who want a free alternative. pnpm is also free and supports Android alongside Linux, macOS and Windows. uv is free and cross-platform, and suits readers choosing a Python package tool. Cargo is a free Rust package manager and build tool; Gradle is an open-source build system. Composer offers free PHP dependency management under the MIT license. Conan is a free and open-source option for C and C++ dependency and binary management. Pixi offers free and open-source package hosting options, including a plan with a global CDN, 100GB of public packages and unlimited channel users.

Verdict

Choose npm if your work centers on JavaScript and you want broad public package distribution, solid project dependency features or private publishing with explicit individual and team plans. Its main advantage is a large shared registry and a free tier without a public-package cap; look elsewhere if your package workflow is built around another language or you want private publishing without a monthly fee.
